Midfield can't contain the ball, defence had a bad day, which can't really happen as it is our only key to success, and to top it all off, all our strikers looked ineffective.
8 games minimum for all our strikers, 9 games in, a combined 35 appearances, and 1 goal to show for it. Woeful.
International break very much needed to dispense of a Sheffield Wednesday side that is a must win game.It wasn’t great but we were beaten by the better fresher team. I’m not sure woeful is the correct description
Could barely string an attack together, 0 shots on target, couldn't keep the ball mostly. I don’t see any positives in that performance.
Woeful is the exact way I would describe 1 goal between 4 forwards in 35 appearances.
Thierry Small has 2 and he had no end product apparently (not entirely disagreeing with that)What about Bree then? Sometimes you only seem to consider the last game we’ve played. You are prone to hyperbole, when we both win and lose8 -
Fuck me. One loss after a really good run of points and some people on here are chucking themselves off cliffs.Must be exhausting to be that up and down about football. One loss and everyone is focussing on our clear development areas again and saying we’re screwed. Those areas are conveniently forgotten when we win, or seem to lose their importance. We’re not going to win every week. We’ll get outplayed a lot this year, but we’ll also win a lot of games with our style, admittedly by the odd goal it looks like. Some people forget where we were 12 months ago33

I seem to be in the minority in that I think we played pretty well in the first half. I had us as marginally the better team. Kelman's best half for us in terms of link-up play but he and TC never really looked like scoring. Ramsay had Small in his pocket.
Preston came out a much improved side in the second half. They were on top before the subs but really did start to turn the screw after Campbell went off and Small started finding space.
Bree and Carey were subdued today and sadly the subs didn't add any impetus.
It's great that NJ tries to change things when we're losing but I do think he can be too gung ho. Am not sure he needed to make so many changes, so quickly, in response to their goal, and the outcome was similar to the QPR game in that we lost our shape.
A tough game and I'm sure most neutrals would have expected this result. Time to dust ourselves down, keep working on the forward play in training and go and smash the Wendies after the break.17 -
Thought this would happen, very typical Charlton that our manager slags off an ex player and he scores a (heavily deflected) goal in answer. Derby were bemoaned by their own fans and pundits that they don't shoot enough and if you don't hit the target you won't score, and had the lowest shots on target in the league. I wouldn't be surprised if we're close to the bottom on that stat too, we're nearly a quarter of the way through the season and our strikers aren't scoring, but more importantly you can count on one hand for each of them the attempts they've had on goal, and that's the worrying part2

1 defeat in 5 or 2 wins in 5. Depends if your glass is half full or half empty.1

Really enjoyable afternoon.
There is quite a long walk to the museum now because of the road works on Leeman Road.
The museum is free to visit but you can make a donation.
It is £10 to park in the car park across the road.
I did not book online but there was still plenty of room in the museum. Wide variety of trains, cafe and gift shop. Plenty of toilets including disabled.
You do need to keep your ticket for the newly refurbished engine hall. There is a miniature railway and play area too and another cafe.
Certainly worth a visit.17 -

has one cause really today that was an OG by Ramsey I know the crap about it’s on target but fact is if Ramsey was not there it would have been a save for Kaminski … it was not “ woeful “ blimey we are in the championship playing a team in the top 6 and we held them comfortably until a very lucky goal changed the game .. we would have have got a point and then your be saying what a great team performance etc etc
The performance was dreadful, the goal scoring record is woeful, don't understand how the latter can be argued tbh in isolation.
I wouldn't have said great performance etc if we got a great point, just like I didn't with the Derby performance.
I am not some knee jerk fan, I understand it's a long old season. But if we play well, I am gonna say how well we played, and if we play bad (like today) I am also going to say that on the post match thread.3 - Sponsored links:

What about him? I have already covered his goal record in the last few games, and said it is concerning he has more goals than our forwards, as he won't be able to sustain it, and forwards need to step up.
Prone to hyperbole? Not being rude but have you just learned the word today or something?
If you think my posts are exaggerated and 'not to be taken seriously' then breeze past them, easy enough. I personally wouldn't quote someone who posts in 'hyperbole'.7 -
I’ve been going for 40 years and that performance wasn’t dreadful compared to some of the dross I’ve seen in that time
We kept it fairly tight for an hour but the strikers and changes don’t work all the time (like they did at Sheffield)
The way we play is full on and we’ve started to look a little leggy late on in the last 2 games but every faith in NJ to get the big results in the big games like Sheff W at home, certainly no need to panic and no over the top criticism from me tonight just got done by a slightly better team in the end

Preston were too good all over the pitch. They are a very good team
My view is that our midfield is better defensively and that is why our forwards get such poor service. In January, need am offensive midfielder who is is able to make forward runs/passes. If Kelman, TC and Miles had better service, we could score more goals. We will get better, but I can't blame the forwards alone for our lack of a threat up front.

I think at the moment we would struggle to give him away. He doesn't seem to have pushed on (perhaps his injury has affected him longer term) but It seems there is something missing at the moment.
I'd start with Oloafe & Kelman for the next few games. Try that pairing & see how we fare.7 -

No one is ready to jump off a cliff, no one is forgetting where we were, no one is expecting to win every week.
What I do expect after getting up at 5:30am, and doing a 10 hour + round trip, is to see my team show some attacking flair, and test their keeper, irrespective of result.
Not exactly expecting much is it.
Has anyone on this thread actually said "we are screwed" 😂4 -

We turned up and set up a good side, but got beat by an OG and a very dubious offside, must have been very close, and ironic it was the same lino that stopped us in our tracks 7 times, when there must have been as much doubt as their second.
Anyway, enough about the Thierry bloody Small show, who apart from that fluky og goal he celebrated like he had just won the world cup, did the sum of naff all.
But we were not at our game most of the time it must be said, but still created the best chances first half, and maybe should have done a bit better, on the change around they did create some good moves, and Kaminski had to be alert to keep us in it until that second, then we just seemed to be chasing shadows.
Anyway, two weeks break now, and a chance to re-charge and get ready for Wendies visit 18th October, when I'm sure this game will just be a bad memory quickly forgotten, and normal service will resume...COYR...👍

Probably the better team first half but didn’t create anything of significance. Two bang average sides, boring game. They were the better side second half and get a bit of luck for the first goal, second is on the counter but absolutely zero pressure from us.No one played badly but no one played well either. Onto the next one. Forgettable.1

I think we learnt a big lesson today. When we have 3 games in a week NJ needs to trust his squad and rotate the same 11 players in the main starting the way we play is exhausting. They need a rest so the break comes at the right time for us. I don’t know if they have a game but if TC is off with Jamaica no way should he start when he gets back.8

ball no better then he was with us and Ramsey kept him very quite .. Costello on the bench Anderson was left out

Points after 9 games from each of the last seven seasons when we were last at this level:
25/26: 12
24/25: 13
23/24: 11
22/23: 11
21/22: 6
20/21: 19
19/20: 173 -
I didn't watch today, but the defeat didn't surprise me. Preston are a solid Championship team, while another long distance away game was always going to be a challenge, for a side which looked leggy on Tuesday.
Going forward NJ will need to find a way of rotating more, as we need to be 100% at it to get points in a tough league.2 -
