POST-MATCH THREAD: Preston North End v Charlton Athletic: Saturday 4th October 2025: KO 15:00
Charlton ably contained the home side for the first twenty minutes of this windy and drab northern affair. Preston often got themselves into good positions but their finishing was woeful. Dobbin, Small, and Jebbison lacked any kind of composure in front of goal in the first half. Charlton pressed and covered well but found it difficult to create much beyond the odd chance here and there from set pieces and counterattacks. Perhaps the visitors’ best chance came from such a counter, on 43 minutes, when Charlie Kelman broke down the right hand side in space. His ball into Tyreece Campbell at the near post was taken off his foot by the Preston defender. The referee’s whistle to signal the end of the half came right on 45 minutes with nothing to separate the two sides.
On 51 mins, some interplay on the right resulted in a Bree cross that beat everyone, right across the six yard line. Campbell tried to get on the end of at the back post but was a half yard short.
A change was made with Miles Leaburn replacing Campbell and it was at that point that the game opened up, primarily with Preston now finding more space. If you doubt what Tyreece brings to the side, this should be an eye opener. Preston, now uninhibited down the right, began to probe with more intent.
Some ten minutes later, Preston swung the ball in from the left hand side, splitting the Addicks’ defense. The ball bounced in front of Thomas Kaminsky, and was headed by McCann straight into the path of the keeper, who palmed it up and fell to the ground with the ball in his arms on the line to complete a very good save.
It was on 66 minutes that the ball fell to former Addick Thierry Small. His shot went into the ground and was deflected off of Kayne Ramsay and past Kaminsky to put the home side ahead.
Then on 79 minutes the second went in from a break through that looked well offside but perhaps was just a ball that found our back line napping. Further changes were made by Nathan Jones, including the introduction and season debut of Luke Berry, but the game was out of reach for the visiting side.
With issues with the trains this morning making it difficult for the travelling support I thought our following was brilliant from kick off all the way through and it was a shame they weren’t rewarded.

Won't win them all.
Same issues up front that we've had all season.
Defense won't be able to keep clean sheets every game.
TC has aura apparently.
We move on.8 -
Not fun. Next.1

Dull game with Preston deserved winners after they upped the tempo 2nd half.
0 shots on target tells you all you need to know about us.8 -
Very poor today and I’m sure they know it. Tiredness out there. Please can this be the end of the TC and Kelman experiment up front.Playing long balls and crosses to them against big northern CBs was diabolical. Not sure what Apters done to piss off Jones - was excellent start of the season now can’t get a look in. I understand when we’re defending a lead or a draw but chasing a game, he has to come on with nothing to lose and offer a different attacking threat. It should be Olaofe for TC not Leaburn too.Great start to the season overall but needs to get back on track with a win against Sheffield Wednesday - if we lose that game will certainly be some jitters with the games to follow.12

2nd half completely outplayed. We can’t do 3 games in a week the way we play, we have to adjust to this league better26

No problems there until the changes. Have to say i was feeling well satisfied in terms of looking comfortable at this level up until TC taken off. Midfield continues to grow in strength. Some nice intricate and forward play at times from the midfielders.
As before, changes are where some of the lessons need to be learned and Jones still working out what combinations are best pre game and in-game it seems. Plus the finishing of course but that's implicit with getting the right combinations up front.11 -
That was pretty crap. Not one to get too down about one defeat but we never really got going and looked out of ideas in the final third. Actually think that was worse than QPR, we were much sloppier in possession than usual which will no doubt annoy NJ.Only the second time we have played badly so far this season, would have bitten your arm off to be 12th come October.Hopefully a little bit of a reset over the break and back at it for Sheffield Wednesday, which has to also be the last time we stick with TC and Kelman, any other opponent and I would say a switch up up top was mandatory.2

what a load of Charlton rubbish, no flair, no initiative, no omph - going through the motions and taking the piss out of our supporters that did make the game.14

Win some lose some as the old cliche goes. Preston are a good Championship side so we can't complain too much. But as a footnote - the last game we lost prior the last international break saw us go on a 4 match unbeaten run. We can rest up for this international break and do it again. COYA!!!8

Second best all game but Preston are a significantly stronger outfit then they usually are.
Not quite at the stage of worrying about how little goal threat we have up top, but it would be nice for Kelman, TC or Leaburn to get off the mark.3 - Sponsored links:

Shit day at the office. Chance to re-charge the batteries now. The 3 teams we have lost to are all in the top 6. 12 points form 9 games is certainly more than I anticipated. I’d say we are in pretty good shape4
-
Great save from Kaminsky then a couple means later spills a cross that didn’t cause any agg thankfully
We look a bit toothless as an attacking unit but the defence will hopefully keep us up.
take 21st and build from there .
6 from autos
6 from relegation
I know which one we’ll be a lot nearer to come the end of this season.
still a better return of points than I expected thus far.6 -
Caught the first half highlights and watched the second. Seemed to be a bit of a stalemate. We kept it pretty tight. But not for the first time, the introduction of a sub appears to make us weaker? That said we had chances. Notably Campbell. Who works hard enough but still doesn't have that composure and bravery in front of goal.Leaburn had a similar chance and did much the same as Campbell. It needs to be better. Can't help feeling that if Kelman had been on the end of one of those he would've scored. The late sub flurry had little effect. Anyone else concerned about the physicality and movement of Knibbs? Looked very league one.
Their first was sloppy from us...and it was going wide without the deflection.Second was different level. Looked onside to me and the through ball left us all ends up.Lots to work on. Felt we're holding our own in the defensive third.D minus in the final one!0 -
Either start with Tanto or Mikes alongside Kelman or don’t start with Kelman and one or both of the aforementioned. We can’t keep hoping that we’re still in the game after 60 minutes or so to bring on the game changers.5

Not too disappointed.
Preston are a decent team with some good players. And 2 long trips in a week can't be easy even if the players aren't exactly travelling on a Megabus.
And just so typical that an ex-player scores against us. Why always us?
Thought Docherty had another outstanding game. And Kelman probably his best game for us so far.
Even so, we scarcely looked like scoring. And that is now one goal for our four main forwards in nine games. Something has to change soon because we can't carry on like that .8 -
Ah well, this was always going to be a tough game especially coming off a difficult mid-week away trip. It's a shame we went so defensive after we scored against Derby as the extra two points there would have been nice to compensate for this one. Horrible weather, long away trip, it was always going to be a bit of a pig. In our last 4 league games we've won home and away, drawn away and lost away against some decent teams, that's a very good return for a side that ultimately will be satisfied with 21st if it comes to it. Oxford lost, Wednesday lost and while Hull won they beat Sheff Utd so it could have been worse. There's still 12 teams behind us and that's what matters. Now we need to put everything into beating Wednesday at The Valley.4

It all fell apart when Campbell came off, he keeps the opposition busy and helps keep our midfield competitive. I was also disappointed with Leaburn again today. He’s not brilliant in the air and holding the ball up and despite his size, not very strong. We are really crying out for a Chuks in his prime sort of player to win those battles and scare the defence. Preston were a quality side though, but that’s two straight games where we lost control of the midfield once the subs happened at 60mins.17
-
We were ok. Preston weren’t all that either but a lucky deflection and a dodgy offside trap made the difference. It’s not like they put us under siege. We’ll move on and I’m sure we’ll be much better against the massives in a couple of weeks7
-
Not a great game overall. Preston stepped it up in the second half and we just couldn’t match them. We offered very little going forward—zero shots on target tells its own story.
Given our record against former players, it felt inevitable that Small would have an impact. But honestly, we don’t help ourselves by booing ex-players. They’ll come and go, it’s part of football and especially part of Charlton. Time to move on.

No athleticism or creativity in center of the pitch…cov and doc good defensively but not going forward….0

EXTREMELY bad day at the office...
Worrying that we are starting to leak goals now, without really looking like scoring many. We've been here before!
-Kelman much better and certainly earning his place - desperately needs a goal though
- really dislike the inclusion of Burke thus far, doesnt seem to add any defensive strength and like to wander forward where he is equally as useless
- TC and Kelman are crying out for a Godden to play with, someone to draw players in and hold the ball up
- Ramsey has really not kicked on since coming back into the side, and has looked quite weak
- feel we really miss Apter (or potentially Hernandez) direct attacking style and pinning oppo's fullbacks in their own half
- midfield fairly solid
- No idea what Knibbs brings to the side - for me, Anderson has to be playing/subbed on in front of Harvey
- watching Leaburn is getting extremely tiresome now. Brings very little to the game, and only ever seems to slow down our play and means we revert to longball when he normally barely makes a misplaced flick on
- Why they hell we bring Bell on, at 1-0 when we should be attacking the game. why no Hernandez or Apter!?
Once again, we got a bit lethargic and blasé in playing the ball out from the back and there was never really any spark to get us going. 1-0 and we need to be attacking the game, on the floor and dragging players about - but instead we put two ineffective lumps on and concede more possession and territory.
We clearly miss Edwards, but seemingly have looked to put square pegs into round holes by lumping Macca and Burke in there whilst wanting Ramsey and Bree to remain.
big change needed over the international break - try out a new style ffs4 -
Thought Kelman was improved again in the first half. We looked a better team with him and Campbell but neither looked like scoring, which is a conundrum.
Campbell should have got on the end of at least one of those crosses.5 -
Beaten by a slightly fresher looking in form team. Nothing to panic about chaps. This will happen on numerous occasions in the coming months. On to the next one25

Preston are a good solid championship team. Charlton matched them for majority of the match. There was some nice crisp passing, start of the second half. Unfortunately, TC went off and with hindsight, maybe Olaofe would have been a better substitution. With no pace threatening, with TC off, space opens up and Small scores a slightly fortitutuios goal. The subs after the goal just led to Charlton losing shape. It is small margins in the Championship. Charlton are definitely competitive, but need a bit more of a spark and experience up front. Some pace to bring on, when TC goes off would be good. Kelman looks better and sharper week on week. It is annoying losing to Preston considering how many players they poached off us pre season squad build.8

That's a reality check!1

This game was 0-0 … we were handling them
Quite comfortably they had one real good chance .. then giant piece of luck that we never seem to get Small shot looked no problem for Kaminski but Ramsey making a good challenge ball flys of him and loops into our goal … it was harsh , we had a great chance through Leaburn to get it back but it was not to be .. Kelman was very good again today question is why take him off when you just gone one nil down .. again today we had 1/2 very good chances today with a little more belief from Campbell and Leaburn , but we have a goalscorer who crying out for these chances he not going to score them on the bench
but we are not going to win every game and Deepdale a tough place to come .. and with this ref who I mentioned before this game and the linesman we can be proud of who close we come on getting a point we move on ..1 -

This is a team undefeated at home, probably our biggest challenge so far too in terms of form and strength as well so I’m not too disheartened. Do feel that as soon as we took TC off we had a gap and weakness that they completely exploited, and surprised Apter wasn’t in for Bree as a sub too. Preston were just the better team at the end of the day. We’re not going to win every game, so I’m not too disappointed by this one. Just like QPR the international break has come at the right time and on to Sheffield Wednesday in 2 weeks which will be the sort of game we need to pick ourselves back up again.12

Campbell and Kellman up top just doesn’t work should never happen again. Give Olaofe a start up top with Kellman. Not sure why Apter can’t get a game either5
