Jones talked last season about building a base and then layering things on top. I think it's the same case this season with the step up and change in personnel. Build a solid base then add on the attacking patterns of play, the possession based play, the control of midfield etc. That looked like the first stage of that. Hopefully we keep on getting better as the season goes on
Exactly this. We started to see progression yesterday, there definitely felt more fluidity in the 2nd half. We had more confidence especially after the second goal, and that was reflected in our play. Next few games will be very interesting.
The main thing is it is now such a pleasure to watch, unlike a few years ago I look forward to the games.
Last thing to click will be the forward line, but as long as we have that strong defensive base I'm not too worried.
I think, and this is not a criticism of TC, that Godden helped TC alot last year and his relationship with Kelman will take time to gel. Again not an issue if our defence is resolute and midfield working hard.
One of the things I've noticed this season and a reason why we have not converted great play into more wins, is that the step up in quality of goalkeepers between League one and Championship.
In all the home games there have been efforts on target that we have started to celebrate only to be thwarted by the man in green (or whatever colour shirt worn - how many remember the days when keepers had to wear green and if it clashed then blue and yellow was reserved for internationals)
Total sidetrack, but I really like our green goalkeeper top this season!
Great result in what I thought was a decent Blackburn side, and showed how good we were second half. Good to see Jones is giving everyone a chance and Olafe was superb when he came on. Jones stated after the game Ramsey wasn't happy to miss out but hey ho don't get yourself stupidly sent off.
Only gripe was I thought the ref was poor and thought we left them behind in league 1.
Not sure if he saw their claim for a pen as I saw him ducking his head round players when it happened as I think had he had a clear view that would have been given.
What a lovely win yesterday and well done to the game changers........ Macca was an early one and didn't that work out for us.... and though Tanto and Miles were a bit later they did just as great a job. Well done also to TC & Charlie who kept their back lines busy for 60 which must have contributed to making it difficult for them to cope when Tanto & Miles did come on. Bit disappointed tbh with Charlie's lack of goal threat so far this season but he's doing a job which NJ sees him as the best candidate for at the minute. Perhaps when Matty is back they'll get to play alongside each other....... I think Matty would give him more to feed off than TC has done so far. But then the other way round, Matty would give TC more to feed off than Charlie has done so far.....? Unfortunately we only have one Matty and it's going to be a little while before he's well and truly back! Good to see more low trajectory throws and passes going towards Charlie though, it gives him more of a chance than the up and under stuff......... Macca tried to give him passes to run onto as well. I'm hoping Charlie (as an individual) is going to turn out to be a medium term plan but the main thing is we're 7th and the coaches and squad are between them are doing the job! I'm going to keep the Kelman faith as so far I haven't seen enough to make me lose it. Big, big shout out to the midfield and defense who as others have said are the solid base we seem to be building first! 3 goals and another clean sheet........ happy, happy days
Bumped into Curtis Fleming in The Pelton Arms after the game. He is apparently a big Smiths fan and was there to watch a tribute band (who were surprisingly excellent). He couldn't have been nicer. Says he thinks Rob Apter has probably been our best player this season and is so unlucky to be out of the team, but James Bree has been outstanding (and in training as well). Also says he rates Lloyd Jones as one of the top CBs in the division. Got the sense he is the good cop to NJ's bad cop - the one putting his arm around players and telling them how good they are when they need to hear it.
He also said the referee was appalling, and he told him at half-time that he was letting the young players down.
And he confirmed that Nathan Jones does live in Greenwich and rides a Lime Bike.
We were a little worse for wear, so hope we didn't annoy him too much! But he is a top bloke.

COYR.
You've not watched much Prem then they seem to be poor at most levels of English football and the ones on the VAR seem to be pretty poor. The only decent refs seem to be the ones for top European games.

Watch plenty I was talking about our match and us in recent seasons. Agree VAR should never have been introduced.
I like Edwards but always feel that he's playing at the very limit of his ability - the injury, as with Ramsey's sending off has certainly shown that we have options all over the team - Bree and Burke add a stature and a bit of know how going forwards down that flank as did Bell down the other - with Gillesphey on fire and pinging accurate and different passes, we were suddenly a lot less obvious and one dimensional as to how we were moving up the pitch - a lot more variety and we create so many more chances - there were a lot of really good performances but i';ll give motm to Carey - that goal showed a bit of real star quality just when we needed it to get what we deserved from the game - this team are just getting better and better and we really haven't played anybody better than us yet - i wouldn't rule anything out as to what we can achieve this year.
In seville having missed my first home game for quite a while but really enjoying reading these comments.
Ditto, except I’m in Granada. Great to see all the happy comments after visiting the Alhambra!
Grenada is a wonderful country. Enjoy your time there. If you get a chance to explore any of the smaller islands of the Grenadines I would highly recommend. The entire stretch between Grenada and St Vincent is incredible. Mayreaux is my favourite place on earth. Perfect barely touched paradise. I volunteered at a coral restoration project that did a lot there. Carriacou and Union Island worth visiting, if you're minted then ive heard Canoun is amazing but its all private resort. Any time spent in any of those islands would be well worth it.

Got me thinking, just looked at a list of Smith's songs to see how they relate to us.

I watched our U18s beat Colchester United 6-0 in the morning. Then had a Millwall fan (in a Barcelona shirt) threatening to beat me up on the bus for supporting Charlton. Of course, he was all mouth and this quickly changed to bragging about how they were above us in the league. Well, they aren't any more.
Seeing nine Charlton goals in a day is certainly a first and it should have been double figures.
Charlton 9 Apoel Nicosia 0 ....................Only us old gits will remember
I'm sure I've still got the programme for that game.

Disagree with the Edwards take. Very consistent puts in a 7 out of 10 every week and at only 25 with the right tutoring plenty of time to improve, seems like a top lad.

I have noticed that most games this season that Edwards seems to put so much into every performance that he usually picks up a small niggling injury which he seems to be able to run off most times. If you looked up committed in the dictionary, there would be a picture of Edwards grinning back at you.

I think I know what Doucher means, but like other members of last season's team, Edwards is in the process of stepping up to the Division.
I'd give the lad credit.
It's only 16 months ago he was playing Scottish 2nd-tier football - and he's already come a long way in a short time.
Maybe he's not as naturally gifted or as pacy as some - but he's tough as nails, resolute, and a very reliable defender.
I am going to catch up with this thread when I get home later, but I can't imagine there is much I can say that hasn't already been said.
As a 34 year old who has mainly watched Championship/League 1 games as a Charlton fan, that was one of the best team performances I have ever seen (might have helped I missed the first 12 uneventful minutes?)
I thought every player almost was fantastic, the desire was like something I can't recall. We should be bloody top of the league imo, which sounds insane.
I don't see any scenario in which we get relegated now. Completely different side to the last few Championship Charlton sides. This is a hungry side that leave everything on the pitch, and we are so bloody lucky we landed Nathan Jones, without a doubt one of the best managers in this league, and I hope he can replicate what Curbs did.
Special mention to our midfielders in Doch, Coventry and Carey who didn't give them a look in, and Tanto for coming on and showing why Stockport loved him. He won us that game imo, he was the difference maker again aside the quality finishes by Carey & the Cheeseman.
My vlog is also up, it is lacking in interviews and the before game atmosphere, but showing up to the Valley 10 mins before kick off roughly, I got what I could.
For those that like watching the action on the pitch, it's quite a good watch tbf, and really demonstrates how dominant we looked at times.
I am nearing 250 shy of 2k subs as well, so if there is anyone who hasn't subbed and enjoys the videos I would massively appreciate the subs, aiming for 2k by the end of the season and a 100% season, haven't missed a game yet and hoping to vlog all 46 as long as I don't get ill again
Wasn't there today, really wish I had been. So pleased for everyone, but particularly for Gillesphey.
Ismael is complaining that they should have had a penalty for a Jones handball - anything in it?
I always look at those incidents and think what if it was the other way round …. 99% on here would be doing the usual bleating about the ref …. I thought it was a pen
I like Edwards and I’m not having a go but I’d say that his and apters replacements yesterday showed a bit more foot on the ball and nouse rather than 100 mile an hour do or die action - we spent more time camped in the opposition half as a result - we can rotate them all and give the oppo more varied questions to answer

It was the type of penalty award that's usually given against Charlton - but never given for us
That was one hell of a performance from everyone. Listening to the interview with Carey gives me the impression that like NJ they seriously think they can give playoffs a good go this season ! The squad don’t seem to be like most of us and settling for 21st place lol
if they can maintain that level of intensity and performance across the season we won’t be far away however mental that sounds
That performance was imho stunning. It got better as the game went on,the players were growing in confidence they all wanted the ball, and all worked their socks off when they didnt have it.every game we play,we seem to get just a little bit better,a little more assured and I dont think we are anywhere near how good this team is going to be.Look at the bench, anyone of those players could come on and the standard would not drop.I may be daydreaming, but come May,we could all be scrambling for Wembley tickets again.

Keeps the opposition guessing, the squad we have at the moment is full of starters but only 11 can start obviously. Whenever we make a substitution at the moment it usually seems to make us stronger while the opposition are tiring. 💪

ref was rubbish which went in our favour! It was a penalty all day long and because he was rubbish he didn’t give it.
Only gripe was I thought the ref was poor and thought we left them behind in league 1.
