I’m seriously considering one of these:

    all-electric-mini-countryman

Does anyone have one of these, or a similar alternative?
I have an MG4 so happy to answer any questions you may have

I have seen this on youtube which pretty much is my approach to new cars, electric and non electric.

You had me worried there for a minute, so I checked online.
You can get a used Inster (Long Range version) for around £21,400, which is only £600 less than I paid for a new one.
You can buy pre registered one's (long range) for about £18.5k (sub 100 miles) the last two 25 plates that went through auction (granted one wasn't the long range) went for under £13k. webuyanycar will effectively give you the trade CAP value, yours with 1000 miles books at about £14.2k. So It's almost done 35% in about 2 months if you paid £22k. And I suspect the £22k was heavily discounted (Hyundai are giving about 20% off straight away, some dealers will go further).

In 12 months the trade value will be sub £10k I'm afraid. It will slow but by three years I'd be amazed if it didn't book at sub £6k.

The auctions are literally full of secondhand electric cars that are simply not shifting even when heavily discounted. My advice to anyone would be to effectively lease one on a good deal if you want to go electric, do not buy a new electric car outright. There's basically very little market currently for electric cars once they are 2-3 years old.

Even worse are Hydrogen cars, fast way to lose 90% in a year!

PS, picked up the Mrs new car last Friday, a dirty petrol mild hybrid :-) BMW 1M Sport, at the weekend on a run did 59.4 to the gallon, I've never had a car do that!
I have a 2004 Fiat Panda 1.1 which I use to commute to and from work. Paid £500 for it, uses £50 of fuel a month and i literally don't care if someone drives into it. Car ownership at its best!
I have a Panda as well. Ideal car in London - cheap to run and easy to park. No idea why anyone wants a big car in London...

    Thanks for the offer.

Put a deposit down on a new MG4 Luxury today. Just need to sell my current car now and then I’ll be really excited about picking it up. It’s the first time in 22 years living in France (will now be on my 4th car) that I haven’t bought a Citroën.

Have driven over 1000 miles in the Inster now, and haven’t looked back. Certainly would never go back to petrol or diesel. I mainly charge at home, but have been on a couple of trips (about 400 miles). Overall cost of charging has been 5p per mile, but it would have been under 2p per mile if only home charging.
The range is about 220 miles which is less than the 250 promised, but the 250 is based on using Eco mode and driving ’sensibly’.
Charging from 20% to 100% overnight costs about £3.
No range anxiety so far when on trips. There have always been plentiful changers, so far at least.

I've driven about 1500 miles in my leased Ford Capri. Not had the need to charge away from home yet as I'm getting around 350 miles to a full charge. Paying 9p per kw and getting about 4.5 miles per kw and it's fun to drive.

I will definetly look to lease again in a couple of years (still dont think I will bother to buy one though given the asking price).

Had an EQB delivered about a month ago, stopped to let someone pass and a car went into the back of it about 2 weeks ago. Got out and it was a former Charlton player 🤦🏼‍♂️

I needed a van for work and I fell in love with the ID Buzz Cargo. I resisted buying it for months and eventually said fuck it, I'm in! It does about 200+ miles on a charge and it's the fastest thing I have ever driven by some way. I don't have to drive up north at the moment so it's been fine for the longer journeys that I've done so far - Bath, Peterborough - and I have no problem waiting for a fast charge for the way home. Getting to chargers is way easier than I expected.

Borrowed a Tesla while my car was in garage. Tried charging at Lidl but after 30 minutes in the rain, trying to set up account and pay without success got on the phone to support, who confirmed it was broken. No internet so couldn’t find nearest charge point. Drove to get a signal and went to a Tesco charge point. Couldn’t get it to work, got even wetter and another phone call and 20 minutes later confirmed broken. I’ve now wasted nearly 2 hours. Eventually found one at Macdonalds and 45 minutes later and 3 hours after I set out to get a charge it was 80% charged. Later charged at home and it took nearly 12 hours. Glad to get my old fashioned petrol car back.

Was an aged Tesla but drove like an empty van with suspension likely to dislocate a vertebrae and managed to lose the back end in the rain.

Overall not a positive introduction to EVs.

If you have a Tesla just use their superchargers. Plug in, go for a brew or toilet break and by the time you are back topped up. Auto billed to your card ( added to their app) . One of the best reasons to have a Tesla.
Facelifted (post 2024) Tesla have much better suspension setup and the interior quality is up there with premium brands. It is fair to say earlier ones are not very good on the finish and squeaks etc

this is a cute electric van

.....but not frightfully butch especially in pink
  • Just had our first break down in our Ioniq 5 , it's 10 months old and has been good so far,  it's virtually fully charged and doing nothing,  won't move or do anything,  looks like my lovely old mk 6 golf gti will be called into service,  I like the idea of electric very much but will always have a classic for fun. Luckily waiting for recovery in a warm pub having something to eat,  haven't broken down for ten years plus with petrol/diesel.

Things are certainly moving up with EVs. The new BMW iX3 has a range of 500 miles! (in reality just over 400 I would guess but still a bit of a game changer).

And the new Renault Twingo city car - 160 mile range, looks cute!, very practical for a car less than 4m in length, and the icing on the cake - £17k list. First orders due sometime next year and I purchased what they call an 'R Pass' which means I'll be one of the first to be able to order. I probably will get one for local stuff and the ICE in the garage for longer (and fun) journeys.
  • Drama over,  12v battery had a fault,  irritating but no disaster,  interesting you mention the ix3 because I'll be going back to BMW for the build quality alone.

Well, we've had our new electric car for two weeks now, done nearly 400km, the battery is currently at 87%, I've charged it twice. Total cost: 0€ with the free charge at the supermarket.

It's bloody beautiful to drive. One pedal system is amazing. I've never understood why anyone wants to accelerate quickly until now either. Get me onto a fast road with this and wow, it's like a warp on a sci-fi movie. It's just fun and modern and cool. I feel cool whenever I get out and look back at it, lol.

I already can't imagine going back to a clunky, pétrol car. It would be like swapping a modern PC for a ZX Spectrum.

I still don't know if it's worth getting a home charger. The 500 euro tax rebate finishes at the end of this year so I have to make my mind up.

The iX3 definitely looks like the one - and I believe it is actually cheaper than the equivalent X3 ICE. My missus is due a new car soon and it's at the top of the short list.

yeah, get a home charger, although for 5 years we just plugged into an extension lead from the garage overnight and that was fine too

You are lucky to get free charge at your supermarket though

Up to 372 miles range after ten minutes recharging!

Finally getting excited by the new EV changes... Just need someone to make a better Pick Up for my camping trips, fishing and tip runs etc, currently best range is 267miles on this beast. Which means under 250 miles.

Regarding home chargers. The 500 euro tax rebate is on the wall charger to be installed by a qualified electrician that cost about 2000€.

There are 3 options now as I see it
    1. Continue as I am with free changing for one hour a week, having to pay for more occasionally, probably once a month.
    2. Get the big wall charger
    3. I asked Chat GPT if it’s worth investing in a wall charger given my low mileage and it suggested a simple plug in charger ( perhaps what @MrOneLung used for 5 years) from Amazon as a compromise which cost between 120-200 €

    Still undecided, though.

Had my IONIQ6 for a year now.  No issues except one of the digital side mirrors sticking.  Read a few things on FB about the integrated charger (ICCU) sometimes failing but they just upgraded the fuse when it was serviced so hoping won't be a problem.  Great for local(ish) non-motorway use and with off street parking and home charger - on Octopus intelligent EV tariff - it's only 7p per KwH means overnight charge averages out at about £3.80 taking the car up to around 300 mile range.  So am definitely an EV fan.  Have never done a long trip needing me to find a charger but the sat nav helps you find one if needed.
