  • The curse of the shin-Komusubi strikes again.
    Losing record for Oshoma.

  • Day 10………Holy cow.
  • If you missed out on getting tickets for the Royal Albert Hall Sumo tournament in October, they just announced a limited number of extra tickets being released.  Tickets go on sale 10am, Friday 25 July.

  • Day 10………Holy cow.
That's changed things, oldest ever kinboshi! Aonishiki has a kachi koshi with only the Maegashitas left to face.

I can't recall anyone throwing Onosato like that before. Would be amazing if at his age Tamawashi could make it 3 Championships.
Haven't seen today's action yet but can't see Ichiyamoto lasting out when he goes against the top geezers.
As you say, Aonishiki has a relatively easy run in but watch out for Kirishima.
    Should be a belter.
  • Didn't Takerufuji throw him in March '24 or was it just an impressive Oshidashi?
  • Day 11 -

You're right about Ichiyamoto but he went down fighting! Great to see Takayasu getting a Kachi koshi.

Looked like Onosato was going to lose again!

I forget tbh but it takes a bit of doing to do it to him these days (God that's clumsy prose).

Day 13 …… it’s a mad, mad, mad, mad, mad, mad, mad, mad world

That's Onosato out of the running, a maegashira will win it! Hope Ura's knee is O. K. Despite 3 consecutive defeats this Basho may play a part in Watakakage's Ozeki promotion.

Having got his Kachi-Koshi, Ura's wisely gone Kyujo.

The Aonishiki v Kusano match sets up the last day brilliantly where it's Kotoshouhou v Aonishiki for (nearly) all of the marbles. A good chance of another 3  way play-off!
  • Omedetou Kotoshouhou! Wish i had a few yens on that!

Aonishiki will probably be promoted all the way to Sekiwake. It seems a matter of when not if he will win a yuushou.

Bit of an anti-climax the title clincher but congratulations to Kotoshoho.

Great 10th win for Wakatakakage (skilfully accounting for Kirishima) that should make him #1 Sekiwake and more importantly means that 11 wins in Sept should guarantee Ozeki promotion (another 10 might just be enough, given how desperate they are for a 2nd Ozeki).

Notably all 4 of Isegahama’s top div fighters (Midorifuji, Atamifuji, Hakuoho and Kusano), fighting under Terunofuji’s tutelage for the first time, got their Kachi-Koshi.

Atamifuji (11-4) in particular looks an improved Rikishi this tournament.

Nishikifuji, from the same stable, is re promoted to Makuuchi with 10 wins in Juryo and might have been Juryo Champ but for 2 days sidelined.

    Way to go Teruno.
  • Kotoshoho's father has been getting a lot of attention online due to his likeness to Master Roshi!

It would be a disappointment if they dropped the Ozeki requirements. The desire the have a Yokozuna hasn't done Hoshoryu much favours.

    I stand corrected.
Forgot Takerufuji (5-8-2) of course though he was fighting with the torn bicep tendon prior to his final 2 day absence.
Nasty injury - hope he’s fully right for September.
  • Banzuke has been released and some how Shishi is still in the Makuuchi Division!

Just had a quick look, didn't know they usually had a Maegashira 18, wonder if they've made an exception for him?
  • Wow, Daieisho drops to Maegashira 10 after his injury absence in July.
If he’s fully fit, he’s got a great chance to grab the Yusho. But maybe a big IF.
A little worrying statlet for Kotozakura, he’s 29-31 thus far this year.
Difficult to fancy him as he’s never done well in September’s Basho.

There aren't many Sanyakus so more Maegashiras this time. I've never seen it reach 18 before!

Yes, having looked into it, there are 42 Makuuchi so work backwards from that. The more you know!
  • Bad news for Takerufuji.
Having had surgery on his torn bicep tendon after July, he’s doubtful for the upcoming Basho and looks like he may, once again, drop to Juryo.

    That's a shame, he's usually a match for anyone
  • Not at all interested, although I hope our next signing Shinnosuke Fukuda does not partake during his forthcoming close season, as he is only little and might sprain something.

It's looks like injuries are set to blight his career.
  • Hoshoryu goes 5-3 vs Onosato and 8-3 vs Kotozakura in practice today.
    Onosato went 0-3 vs Kotozakura.
Wakatakage misses the collective practice session with a fever.

Much better from Onosato today in practice, beating Kotozakura 12-3.
