NJ comments about depth make me think he was sending a message upstairs with his bench tonight
Exactly this, it was such a bizarre thing to load the bench with players who are too inexperienced and have already played a game today then moan about lack of depth when you could have just put a few first teamers on the bench to bulk it out. Maybe a transfer has gone wrong and this was his toys out the pram moment?
  • It annoys the hell out of me how Charlton removed the "pick up from away ground" option from the online ticket options.

In my last 4 away games dating back to last season, I have consistently failed to receive my tickets before the game took place.

I have to play the game of requesting tickets to be picked up at the away ground every time.

This time Charlton only bothered to send 1 of the 2 so I had to buy my other ticket again at the ground to get in today, such fun.
  • I have 3 tickets for the QPR game, only 1 has turned up, no doubt I'll have to do it again. This is mostly royal mail's fault I suspect but I think the club ticket office is impressively shit.

I really hoped and believed we had moved on from that stage as a club.
  • What changed from Stevenage to this game I wonder? Has he just decided to bin off the cup competitions completely, or was it as people say a message to the board?

If so it’s a bit odd, can’t say he’s not been backed
  • Beat QPR, and this poor performance will be forgotten.
But shows how thin our squad is. Got to say it AMB was little better than a Pub team keeper.
Zero Comms and could not hold on to a fairly tame shot.

    Mannion; Z.Mitchell, A.Mitchell, Gillesphey (c); Rylah (Mwamba 76), Knibbs (Berry 46), Rankin-Costello, Anderson, Fullah (Enslin 82); Olaofe (Kanu 65), Leaburn (Kelman 65)

Subs (not used): Maynard-Brewer, Laqeretabua, Docherty, Apter

Players in bold were in todays squad, players in italics have moved on. The only players from the Stevenage who didn't make the squad are Berry (supposedly injured), Leaburn, Doc and Apter. There really weren't as many unforced changes as are being made out, the result was just worse.  The bench probably should have been better but NJ was probably banking on the starting XI being good enough

  • The prize was a potential money spinning 3rd round draw.
    Money spinning? lol!

Slim chance of getting a top team, who'd play their own kids, might get a fuller stadium as a result, but still little revenue from that, whilst winning tonight would have given us a whopping: £7k

As one of the few countries in Europe with multiple Domestic Tournaments across the Professional Leagues, its a competition that is barely worth its existence now, the prize of playing in Europe (which was obsolete anyway, because Newcastle got in the Champions League), is basically it.
With reference to the parts of your post in bold, do you not think, if this is how you feel, that the first is the cause of the second?

Personally I think that the League Cup is well worth its existence and if other clubs want to poo poo it, then I'd like to take advantage and win the f***ING thing......at bloody last ( and bollox to European competition too anyway).

Think we have one of the highest net spends in the Championship, given there have been no sales of players. I honestly believed the recent loans out were all part of an agreed plan. For example A Mitchell out because Burke was ready to play. Tonight has left me wondering. I imagine Jones has a few questions to answer, not only from disappointed fans, but also from the owners.

Cup matches can be great money spinners too if you get a home draw v a PL team - as well as good momentum and excitement for fans. Will just have to put it down to a bad day on the pitch.
Now roll on QPR on Saturday.

It wasn't just the defeat, it was the terrible, ugly and ineffectual tactics which were back to the worst of Oct/Nov '24.
Do you think it was the tactics or the teams inability to play the desired way?
If one of the purposes of the game was to give Oalafe and Kelman, in particular, the chance to jump start their season and give us some real bite up front in games to come, then Gillesphey hoofing diagonal balls as per his worst displays last Autumn was not very helpful. Jones could have put a stop to that with one simple message. So I imagine Jones must have been happy with the tactic. More fool him.
    This.

You don't try to get your ailing marksman off the mark by lumping balls up in the air when he likes them on the ground.

  • I'm royally pissed off with Jones tonight.

No real problems with the starting line up but that subs bench was a disgrace. Picking 2 kids who had played for the U21s earlier in the day is a complete piss take.

And what has come out of this charade? Kelman has gone another game without a goal and Olaofe and Knibbs gained nothing from playing tonight.

And as for the kids? Let's be honest, apart from Fullah none of them should be anywhere near our Championship first team. And Mitchell looks hopelessly overrated.

A rubbish evening all round and Jones needs to have a good look at himself in the mirror tonight.
    Summed it up for me.

I don't get it. Why were we stretched defensively ? Are all our defenders out injured ?? Jones, Edwards, Bell, Ramsay ?? All out??  When did that happen  ???

Yes....I'm being facetious, but why is it that we cant play a few of our first team ? Never used to happen. Teams used to play cup games, extra time, replays.....and more replays. On heavy muddy pitches too. And back on the good old days squads were of 18 or 19 players. One sub (3 if you only go back 20 years). I dont remember Curbs or Lennie changing all 11 starters from the previous Saturday and filling the team with teenagers.

Oh well. Progress they call it. Same for inverted wingers, 50 yard diagonal balls &  playing out from the back.

Those of you who were not bothered about the Swiss Tony cup because it was crap, and now not bothered about the League Cup because we won’t win it, will presumably want us eliminated from the FA cup at the first possible opportunity as we won’t win that? Are you convinced that without that “unnecessary” interference we will get promoted to the Premier League? Or is the entire ambition you hold for the Addicks is to finish 17th in the Championship? And if we do get promoted to the EPL, will you be disappointed as we might get humped 6-0 by Arsenal?
Would you be happy with a Third Round tie, getting dicked 6-0 by Arsenal, and relegation from the Championship, because of the extra games that we've had to play? - Which competition out of all those that we have to play in, is the priority this season?

Championship survival is all that matters, all those with their opinion about tonight's defeat will be the first to voice their opinion about being back in a League that we all bloody well hate, and clearly isn't easy to get out of.
Getting relegated cos of one extra game , dear lord behave yourself!
    This.

Some people tying themselves in knots just to try to make a point.

Winning is a habit. So is losing. You should go out to try to win every game. Yes, maybe rest a few players & play a couple of youngsters, but at least have a few of  the experienced pro's on the bench.

Seems to me that NJ was trying to make a point. What point & to whom I dont know. Maybe putting a few youngsters in the window? Maybe telling to owners they aren't good enough (his post match comments seem to say this). What I do know is he thinks he knows best & wont be persuaded otherwise.
He’s not wrong - the youngsters, in the main, are not good enough for the Championship. We need 4-6 more players in this and the next window.  I hope the owners get the point and spend a few more shillings.

Why is Nathan wrong to highlight that obvious fact?
Because he was the instigator last season of a small squad and to use the yoof instead of loans.

Now, he might just be saying what he's told to say. But Nathan doesn't strike me as someone who follows orders. He's no Yes man.

So, does he truly believe that our Academy players are brilliant & can make the step up or is it just words.

It has pretty unanimous on here that this transfer window has been about our best ever & that Nathan has signed almost everyone he wanted to. Are we now saying the board hasnt supported him ?? If so then that is the first I've heard of it.

Genuinely worried about the lack of goals and creativity in the side.

tanto and kelman will get goals, but not the double figures we need from one/both of them!
Creativity-wise, we are so reliant on TC and Apter - it’s centrally (either CMs, CAM or CF) than needs to bring a spark too
The creative midfielder(s) that we were screaming out for last season still haven't been signed. Our play is based on breaking up play and attacking with pace. Problem is the players with pace (mainly TC) cant cross or set up a chance for the strikers. If JRC & Carey are creative midfielders then they aren't showing it. Also, we really only have space for one of them in midfield due to Doc & Cov who are the undroppable duo. Apter seems about the only player likely to score or set up chances.

Tonight once again showed that once we conceded first you might as well go home.

Absolute dog shit by Jones tonight.  Yes I’ve had problems with him before but tonight was disgusting. If I wanna watch the kids I will go and watch them play. That team selection was a fucking disgrace. Waste of time and money for all those who travelled today. Sick of being treated like a mug by these piss takers
Lots of LOLs being given to this post. I'd be interested to know if any of those LOLs came from anybody that actually spent their hard-earned time and money going to the match. Not many, I expect.
I LOL’d it because I think it’s a massive overreaction. If you followed the match thread you’ll see that I was annoyed as anyone at the choice of team.

However, I think it’s silly to say it was ‘disgusting’ and it’s plain stupid to refer to a manager who got us out of the doldrums of league one, and a leadership team who have actually spent money as ‘piss takers’.
I don't think it's a massive over reaction. Have just spent and wasted loads of money for no reason whatsoever. I have no problem with the team that started, I have no problem with losing, seen us do that a million times already, my problem was the bench was full of kids who were never going to be good enough to change the game should we be losing with half hour to go. I have a problem with we have just spent over 3 mil on a striker and are starting him in a team that was never going to create any chances for him, what is that going to do for his confidence. Same for poor Tanto. He put a squad out which he knew would get turned over and turned over we was. Having that team out there today does no good for anyone, no good for the fringe players confidence and no good for the poor kids who are no where near ready, Fullah being the exception.

Also we are Charlton Athletic we don't ever have a lot to play for, so to throw away a great chance to get a good cup draw against one of the big boys is a massive disappointment.
I wish I could like a post more than once.

    Spot on.

I get your point, we should try and challenge, what's the point of football to just survive.

But the issue is the football pyramid is much less balanced and professionalism is much more acute.

Players are much more fragile due to being much more athletic, and they are likely to get punished for not being in peak fitness for any single game. Both in the game and also in terms of injuries.

With teams throwing nation states' worth of kitchen sinks, other teams can only compete by being selective with fixtures.

And with money being so disproportionate between leagues, that where the clubs put their attention.

I know most of that is stating the obvious but these two elements together have ruined domestic cup football.
  • Just back home, that said had a 50 minute detour to help my folks complete a medical form while M25 Jctn 5 was closed etc.

Anyhow, like others have said, all a bit bizarre. The game was clearly not taken seriously - a men vs boys scenario if ever there was one. The more experienced in the CAFC side just didn’t get going properly all night, while Fullah again shone and Gough looked strong in his cameo debut.

I hope NJ’s post match call for more defensive back ups was a teaser for us fans rather than a public call for a bit more investment. Suspect the former which however irregular to standard form could have been meant as a bit of a booster after a tough night. If it points to the latter, not sure that would be a welcome signal (all round).

At the end of the day, won’t lose any sleep if we get 1 or 3 points at QPR, however, if we lose, three on the bounce won’t feel/be so easy to swallow.

  • Missed this one. But I see it's Cup business as usual lol.
  • I think the criticism of Zach is a bit harsh.  He wasn’t  great but he wasn’t the only one.  I think it safe to say he is a bit rusty but the Zach that played at St Johnstone was much much more solid a few months ago.  It was just an off day.  Very flat
  • If NJ thinks that by giving the starting 11 from last Saturday's exceptional performance rest time, rather than travel to Cambridge on a Tuesday night for a cup game, is the best chance of us winning next Saturday, then that's good enough for me.

I get that's it's annoying to lose and perform badly, especially for those die hards that travelled, but surely he's got a bit of credit in the bank.
  • That’s the sort of performance I dreamt of and demanded in the Bristol street pizza van vertually shit competition .
Utter guff and was even annoyed with my back towards it for most of the game (at a friends house)
    petrol head and Mrs went
  • I'm just looking forward to QPR now. Seeing as we will have 11 rested players we should hammer them....yes ?
You can’t honestly be that dense can you? Seriously?
I think there was a hint of sarcasm in his comment.
  • I'm just looking forward to QPR now. Seeing as we will have 11 rested players we should hammer them....yes ?
I don't expect to hammer them like Coventry did, but when we rest players like this for a cup match, then play as bad as we did, we best bloody now win on Saturday.
