Is it true that a couple of the players on the bench played an under 21 match earlier this afternoon?

Mentions that we are short in defence so has to play youngsters, then goes on to dig those exact youngsters out for not being able to defend the NJ way - even though it took our senior players months to get to that point.

Cant say I’m the biggest fan of that.

I didn't listen or watch but when you play a team made of a majority of youngsters and reserves and have a bench full of youngsters this was always going to happen. It's not the first or last time we exit out of the league Cup early.

What surprised me was the little money clubs get for winning at this stage think it's something like £15k. Let's hope we beat QPR

Those of you who were not bothered about the Swiss Tony cup because it was crap, and now not bothered about the League Cup because we won’t win it, will presumably want us eliminated from the FA cup at the first possible opportunity as we won’t win that? Are you convinced that without that “unnecessary” interference we will get promoted to the Premier League? Or is the entire ambition you hold for the Addicks is to finish 17th in the Championship? And if we do get promoted to the EPL, will you be disappointed as we might get humped 6-0 by Arsenal?
Would you be happy with a Third Round tie, getting dicked 6-0 by Arsenal, and relegation from the Championship, because of the extra games that we've had to play? - Which competition out of all those that we have to play in, is the priority this season?

Championship survival is all that matters, all those with their opinion about tonight's defeat will be the first to voice their opinion about being back in a League that we all bloody well hate, and clearly isn't easy to get out of.
Getting relegated cos of one extra game , dear lord behave yourself!
    This.

Some people tying themselves in knots just to try to make a point.

Winning is a habit. So is losing. You should go out to try to win every game. Yes, maybe rest a few players & play a couple of youngsters, but at least have a few of  the experienced pro's on the bench.

Seems to me that NJ was trying to make a point. What point & to whom I dont know. Maybe putting a few youngsters in the window? Maybe telling to owners they aren't good enough (his post match comments seem to say this). What I do know is he thinks he knows best & wont be persuaded otherwise.
He’s not wrong - the youngsters, in the main, are not good enough for the Championship. We need 4-6 more players in this and the next window.  I hope the owners get the point and spend a few more shillings.

Why is Nathan wrong to highlight that obvious fact?

All those clubs who put out proper teams tonight and then won their games must have right royally screwed their chances of succeeding in their various leagues.

Absolute dog shit by Jones tonight.  Yes I’ve had problems with him before but tonight was disgusting. If I wanna watch the kids I will go and watch them play. That team selection was a fucking disgrace. Waste of time and money for all those who travelled today. Sick of being treated like a mug by these piss takers

NJ comments about depth make me think he was sending a message upstairs with his bench tonight
  • Wednesday played with a team of youth players and knocked out Leeds and thoroughly deserved it. It's not just youth, our first teamers didn't show up. Goals might be a problem this season. Back to business and hope we win Saturday.

NJ needs to tell fans he is going to play youngsters so people don’t waste their money travelling
Based on that then our previous managers over the last five years should have let us know they were putting out a shit team week in week out and then we wouldn't have wasted our money.

You may not have noticed, but a lot of people didn't!
That was a disgrace tonight on so many counts.
One clear penalty for handling and a foul on our player on the edge of the D with the ref playing on, but any Cambridge player could pull back or foul our players with no consequence.
The lino nearest our fans spent more time tidying his hair than watching play. Certainly, he never spoke to advise the referee as his assistant should.
We had players on the bench who were involved in the U21 match this afternoon.......
The senior players did not turn up or couldn't be bothered with the exception of Anderson who was covering two positions, his own and Rankin Costello.
JRC should never be allowed to take a corner since none of his cleared the 1st defender.
I could go on but it would be futile since Jones owes me two hours of my life I won't get back!

Bar Mitchell and Laq (who hasn’t played much senior football at all) the youth were ok, they weren’t the problem. We looked more dangerous with the majority U21 side than we did with all the senior players

Lots of LOLs being given to this post. I'd be interested to know if any of those LOLs came from anybody that actually spent their hard-earned time and money going to the match. Not many, I expect.

    It was the League Cup
    not the Pizza Trophy.

The prize was a potential money spinning 3rd round draw.

Now our lesser used squad players / 1st team ‘finishers’ have fewer opportunities to look forward to.

Usual attitude towards a competition we should want to do well in.

    Poor all around.

NJ needs a win at QPR and against Millwall to redeem himself. 🙂
Hang on, so we shouldn't play the lesser players in the cup because we got knocked out, and that means the lesser players have less games to play in?! 🤔

    Make it make sense!

Most/all the goals conceded came through Laq/Hobden on that right-hand side. Way too lightweight.

Charlton looked better when they got the ball down and played but that rarely happened. Too much lumping the ball forward. Midfield 3 didn't combine well. They really made me appreciate Conor Coventry and the role that he plays and even Doherty with the defensive midfield work he does. I was disappointed with Rankin-Costello.  Kelman got zero service. Defence looked really weak and that was not helped by the lack of support from midfield. Only real bright spot was Fullah's goal.

I LOL’d it because I think it’s a massive overreaction. If you followed the match thread you’ll see that I was annoyed as anyone at the choice of team.

However, I think it’s silly to say it was ‘disgusting’ and it’s plain stupid to refer to a manager who got us out of the doldrums of league one, and a leadership team who have actually spent money as ‘piss takers’.

Genuinely worried about the lack of goals and creativity in the side.

tanto and kelman will get goals, but not the double figures we need from one/both of them!
Creativity-wise, we are so reliant on TC and Apter - it’s centrally (either CMs, CAM or CF) than needs to bring a spark too

Lots? At time of my writing this it's six. Probably better described as a few or maybe several. Yeah it wasn't great, but if we can all ease up on the hyperbole, it'll probably do everyone's blood pressure a favour.

So glad I took my lad out of school for that Man U game three years ago.

A decent cup outing for us is as rare as a turkey-toothed pirate.

2-0 Mitchell muscled off the ball just inside the box, and can't recover to block the shot.

Just the man for a league cup run. Missed a trick in not offering him a contract to cover these games.

Not too worried about the senior players. The side put out tonight was just far too young.

Kelman was OK. Probably didn’t do much more for his confidence, but once again, difficult in a young side.

With the comments from Jones I’m half thinking he’s done it on purpose. I make him right too. We need further experience at the back.

That's fair enough, but my point is those that travelled and spent time and money doing so are understandably annoyed.
  • The youngsters we played tonight were not the entire problem. Indeed, when we subbed off the first teamers, the additional youngsters coming on improved our play, as noted by many of the supporters standing alongside me at the ground. The first teamers did not commit, and it looks as though we have bought a few dud fireworks over the summer. Macca looked as though he'd forgotten what he was doing in defence and for the first half, we lumped it forward to the ineffective kelman tanto and knibbs. JRC at times looked like he was modelling for a statue outside the ground and his corners were disgraceful. Some of the youngsters will be scarred by that ( joe Piggott  never recovered from being thrust forward in a milwall match).  The one who has to learn from that is Jones, the player that came out with most credit was Ibrahim Fullah.
  • It was all an over-elaborate exercise to get big Jimmy Rodwell back on the telephone!

I must admit I've become very tired of these feeble cup exits.
