Morts was also a classy defender, often much criticised as a winger because he didn't jump in; merely waited for the forward to commit left or right. 

Saw him many times for the stiffs playing LCB in a four. Not sure he ever played at the back for the 1st XI.

He's the 1 player in our side that I think could comfortably step up to the premier league.  Fabulous player.

Don't mind the chant he has, but he isn't really a winger so doesn't suit him. 

Having looked at his early career, I do wonder whether a succession of defeats, culminating in a horrible game for all concerned which resulted in Southampton effectively writing Ramsay off really knocked him for six. What then followed wouldn't have helped with loans where he was pulled here and there as well as suffering from injuries.

For the record, I am not, of course, for one minute suggesting that these results were in any way his fault but it would have been very difficult for him to stand out when all around him were failing.

Ramsay's Southampton career:

2018-19

FL Trophy v Cambridge Lost 4-0  (90 mins)
FL Trophy v Southend Lost 3-0 (came on at HT with the score 3-0)
PL v Man City Lost 3-1 (90 mins) - the youngest PL starter in 2018-19
FA Cup v Derby Drew 2-2 (110 mins - Lost on pens)

2019-20

FL Trophy v Forest Green Lost 3-2 (90 mins)
FL Trophy v Walsall Lost 1-0 (90 mins)
FL Trophy v Coventry Lost 3-2 (90 mins)

Ramsay didn't then play another game until he went on loan for one month to Shrewsbury in League 1 in February 2020 during which time he played 5 games of which he started just a couple. He didn't play another game that season for anyone following that from what I can see. Whether he was injured I don't know.

2020/21 :

FL Trophy v Stevenage - Lost 2-1 (90 minutes)  
FL Trophy v Northampton - Lost 5-0 (90 minutes)
PL v Man Utd Lost 9-0 (90 minutes)
FA Cup v Bournemouth Won 3-0 (1 minute - came on when the score was 3-0)

So 10/11 defeats in a Southampton shirt with just the one minute in that Cup win after those. It is that game against Man Utd, though, that might have been the ultimate killer. At the time, Southampton had a number of injuries and they had a player sent off in the 2nd minute and another in the 86th. That can't have been a great experience for Ramsay.  
  
The following season he was sent to Crewe on loan in League 1 in August and although he would make 19 appearances, he missed two months in the middle of that through injury before being recalled by Southampton in January only to be sent straight out to Ross County where he would start just 5 matches (3 subs) and after being sent off on 19th March 2022 he never played for anyone again that season. So another season ending in a knock back.

Ramsay then trialed for a couple of League 1 teams before Harrogate stepped in. The one thing that he probably wanted at that point was stability and to play at a level where he knew he would start and could begin to re-build his career. In his first season he made 31 appearances but missed three months through injury. In his second season and his last before joining us, he made 37 appearances missing at one point seven weeks through injury.

Sometimes a series of unfortunate events can hit the confidence of an athlete and where they feel, as a result, a reset at a level where they can be the big fish in a small point will do them the world of good and allow them to reboot their career. It's very difficult to understand that when you haven't walked in his shoes but he wouldn't be the first talented sportsperson to go under the radar due to circumstances beyond their own control. We're the lucky ones to reap the benefit of that but I wouldn't mind betting that NJ has had a big hand in making him feel wanted and give him the clarity of what was expected of him and the freedom in that role to express himself. We're exceptionally  lucky to have him.

Losing isn't fun whoever you are playing for or against. Equally. I'm not sure that you can discount FL trophy minutes when he played against Man City and Man Utd in the same seasons as those games and was considered strong enough to play against as big but quicker and more skillful players than the likes of Shrewsbury and Northampton. 

All I was trying to do is to demonstrate that his whole experience at Southampton was a disaster - from playing for them at any level to being sent out on loan to Crewe, being recalled and straight back out to Ross County. Even the Crewe Manager knew nothing about it 'til it had happened. All of that, combined with injuries, cannot have put him in a good place. Any athlete can be the best physically in their sport but if their mind isn't right then they are never going to show their best.

Well their U21s beat MK Dons and Colchester without using him. That won't have made him feel any better about things. As I keep trying to emphasise - it's not our perception of how things are going that matter. It's his and defeat after defeat including a 9-0 thrashing after which you're given one minute of football at the club before your dream of being a Premier League footballer is seemingly over, relatively unsuccessful loans and injuries aren't good for the mind. The one thing you need then is stability and to feel wanted. He got that at Harrogate and even more so now and that ultimate dream is still very much on. Hopefully with us too.

This. Let’s keep it on the DL. Also, let’s be honest he was poor in the last two games. Positionally dreadful and didn’t seem to know where he was playing. Some of his tackles were reckless at best and he was lucky not to get booked or worse. He put in very little effort and didn’t even bother to clap the fans at full time.

I'm glad you've picked up on his attitude. He must be terrible for dressing room morale.

Is anyone able to shed light on Kane's contract situation, as mentioned in a Rich Cawley post today? - I presume that its simply to say that we're in discussions with Ramsey about extending his deal?

Would rather he didn't get to next summer with simply a year left on his deal though... Feels like it would give Kayne and suitors a bit more power over the situation.

And the really good players will become less inclined to sign an extension based on an unwritten promise (e.g. Isak although he hadn't signed an extension and still has three years to run) so, perhaps, we can persuade him to sign one that has a release clause of "x" amount written in. The issue then becomes what figure is acceptable to club, player and his agent.
