Thames Gateway Bridge finally killed off to boost new homes and DLR

    https://greenwichwire.co.uk/2025/07/17/thames-gateway-bridge-thamesmead-dlr-beckton-riverside/

The bridge should have been built before the Silvertown tunnel.
The main reason it didn't get built was that there were no acceptable road connections for it south of the river.

Went through the Blackwall Tunnel northbound last Wednesday morning at 0930. No queues on the approach road.

There’s dual carriageway from Thamesmead all along the river to Erith.

There is a clear line of derelict land they had earmarked for it from the the edge of the river to the roundabout next to HMP Belmarsh.

Unfortunately the dual carriageway doesn't link up to similar roads.

TfL has released the first detailed data about the effects of the Blackwall and Silvertown Tunnel
    - Weekday traffic at Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels is down during the week and up at weekends
    - Weekend traffic through Woolwich Ferry is up 58 per cent
    - Traffic is also up at Rotherhithe Tunnel, but down slightly at Tower Bridge
    - SL4 bus to Canary Wharf has 6,700 users each day, but cycle shuttle has only 125-130

Set up an account before the tolls came into operation, used blackwall tunnel last weekend, during tolls charge times, as of yet, I've not had anything on my account. I have checked and my account is set up with my car reg on it.
  • Nice little payday for Sadiq

Now there’s someone to put in a build a bonfire song with James O Brien 👂 🍷

How do think public services are paid for? Or do you live on a private island for 1 somewhere?

Do you pay at month end too? Ive got an account with my vehicles on it, but can't say as ive noticed if ULEZ / Blackwall Charge / Dartford Charge comes out immediately, or in one go as the end.

Gatwick Drop-Off comes out your account before you're even on each roundabout coming out of either terminal ffs

I think the payment comes out at the end of the month mate.

Hi mate, not to worry you, but check you’ve ticked your car for ‘autopay’ as I’ve recently been stung by this (twice) and the TFL website to me is very ambiguous.
The TFL system runs different to the Dartford crossing, where adding a car automatically registers it for any crossing and any auto payment you may have set up on the Dartcharge website.
If you are looking for TFL to automatically charge, you need to make sure your car has the autopay box ticked, and you have to delve a little deeper into its pages to find it.
Hopefully you’re all good, but just thought I would share as it proper miffed me!

Think the link is working, people just need to get the hang of using the round-a-bout on the other side. I don't think I've come through there during a peak time when there ain't been someone causing a problem on it

I use it now to get to matches rather than the Dartford crossing. And Alan Curbishley say he loves it.

We use both tunnels (not at the same time) as we drive down from 'up North'.

The Silvertown tunnel has certainly improved things.  But there is rarely any traffic in it when we drive through.

I suspect that things have improved as a result of traffic going elsewhere, so I'm not surprised to hear that the Woolwich Ferry has got busier.

This makes sense as I'd predicted that the new tunnel would simply shift the location of the traffic hold-ups to the approach roads.  That doesn't seem to have happened.

I use it to go south, but tend to use Dartford for going back home still - that's more to do with parking down Eastmoor Street and having to turn left out of there than anything else. What impresses me most about the Silvertown tunnel is how the queues to get to Blackwall along the A13 have been cut. I'm genuinely surprised at this as I thought the two tunnels would have been too close, but it works.

More prejudice at rush hour. 5p increase if you live in Essex & work in Kent. But 20p increase if you live in Kent & work in Essex.

How this is legal is beyond belief. But I keep being told to pipe down & get on with it.

Not too long for a new mayor I suppose.

I doubt however we will see the tariffs change much.
