Charge to use Blackwall Tunnel

  • Went on the super loop 4 bus through the tunnel today.
Roadworks in Blackheath village buggered things up, and the bus route north of the tunnel to Canary Wharf is torturous.

Large HGV's will be allowed to use the Bus Lane, there are height restrictions on the Blackwall Tunnel, this could well increase the number HGV's using the crossing who at present use the Woolwich Ferry, which in turn will Increase pollution in Greenwich. This being the first week of half term, traffic would be less than normal, so it will not be for another 3 weeks before true usage will be seen.
But presumably reduce pollution in Woolwich, where the approaches to the ferry run right through the town.

On balance I would say that outcome is an improvement.
  • Purely an assumption here, but do the majority of journeys that travel South to North through Blackwall carry on up the Blackwall tunnel appch A102 to A12 and then M11 and North?
Bit of a ball ache getting from the North exit of the new tunnel back to the A102 to head north if you ask me.
  • Came northbound down the A102 at about 4.45 today, glad i wasnt heading southbound as a lot of traffic had got through the two tunnels but it wasnt going anywhere, must have been an accident or something on the southbound a2 as it was queuing for miles. If there wasnt an accident then it may be fucked every day.

A13 and north circular to get to the M11. 50mph after the Canning Town flyover.

Now that is a ball ache. A13 is chocca to the North circular coming out most nights as it is!
  • It’s almost as if most people aren’t eligible who use the tunnel 😡
Which is exactly why charges are brought in. To deter people from using the tunnel who do so for convenience, at the significant inconvenience of the people who live near it.
    Sorry....???

What do you mean....." deter people from using the tunnel who do so for convenience" ?   What a stupid statement. The tunnel is there to use. Its not a convenience its a necessity. I used it today to get from Bromley to Wansted. How use I am supposed to get there.....swim ???.

As for it being an inconvenience of those living near it.......either move or put up with it. I expect it was there before you moved into the area.
.... the roads should be free for people who actually need to use them - tradesmen, delivery drivers, the emergency services .......
so you agree as the above applies to me. I went to see a client today in Wanstead. A GP no less. It wasn't a day out or a jolly....I was working. And I wasn't "going into London" so should pay a premium on my "ticket price" like commuters going to work in the City. I left home at 10.45am and drove on a public highway like millions of others did today.

Perhaps we shouldn't have cars......or even roads 🙄.

I don't know how to tell you this, but absolutely you should have taken public transport. Unless you were in the trades and carting a load of gear round, or were delivering something that couldn't easily be carried. What is it you do for a living?
I once got off a driving ban because the magistrate realised I needed my car for work & not all my clients live close to bus stops & train/tube stations.

That's the problem with politicians and people like you......you dont live in the real world.
    Is this for real? 🤣🤣🤣

Fuck me, you got off a driving ban? What for? No, don't tell me - you were unlucky enough to be caught going 41 in a 40 on four separate occasions, your speedo was faulty but the officer wouldn't hear it, they're all little Hitlers just collecting money for the police Christmas party and you were only on the way to see a sick relative all four times anyway and why should you be punished for going over the limit it was only a little bit and it's not fair motorists are unfairly targeted why do we even pay road tax wah wah wah....

With every post you make I'm even more convinced you're a windup.
It was for clipping a cyclist and then reversing back over them to finish the job. Never worth a ban in the first place imo,
Hilarious stuff. I'll remember that next time I'm at a funeral for a kid I've watched grow up riding a bike, killed by an inattentive driver who t-boned him on an arrow straight road with perfect visibility. Good one.

  •  I realise that many road users do not give cyclists the care and attention they deserve and i was attempting to light heartedly make this point.

In hindsight not very well judged and very sorry to hear of the death of your friend. Apologies for the offence caused
  • No worries - for my part, sorry to jump down your throat. It's an emotive subject, and particularly raw to me at the moment - I should have taken it in the context it was intended and not let my emotions get the better of me

As someone who lold that post and without wanting to go off topic, I have stopped cycling in London because I have seen the roads get more and more dangerous in recent years (especially since I moved to Bromley and have to cycle through the pothole ridden roads of Bromley, and the pot ridden drivers of Lewisham/Camberwell).

People are fucking idiots. It was a real passion for me and I loved cycling in every day.

I (and many thousands of others) used the Blackwall tunnel for the City and West End.

At the time I had a couple of options with back doubles using Salmon Lane or Narrow Street which was better than the main drag.  I also remember using the Limehouse Link the day it opened and thinking it was a game changer - it soon clogged up with traffic though, just like everywhere else.

This is a really important point. New Road links are great and much needed. But, all the evidence shows that building them alone only creates additional demand for them. They need to be part of a wider investment in public transport (both road and rail) in order to actually bring benefits to traffic and flow.

Down by Greenwich Yacht Club is probably as gooder place as any to go in mate. Unless you use the steps down by the Navel College, but that'll bring you out at Island Gardens (as long as the current ain't too strong), which is right at the tip of the peninsula.

    Are they super?
  • You can’t (or it isn’t allowed) get on the Superloop 4 at the bus stand at Grove Park. You have to walk a little way north along Baring Road.
I initially thought the bus would be a fast journey because it would only stop at ‘significant’ bus stops, but it will stop at every bus stop along its route.
When I went on the SL4 on Monday lunchtime there were people filming at every stop, and others along for the initial experience.
North of the Silvertown tunnel the SL4 seemed to take a bewildering and convoluted route to Canary Wharf through what felt like a concrete wasteland. One stop was near a large old building with ‘Thames Ironworks’ (West Ham United) on the side of it.
Downstairs at Canary Wharf station, amongst all the rip off panini shops there was a Greggs where you can get a tea and vegan sausage roll at a comparatively reasonable price.
In terms of travel to the Valley, I suppose you have to get off at the stop just past the petrol station on Shooters Hill road, cut down the alley by the Marks and Spencer by Blackheath Standard and walk from there.
That option from Lee is also similar to taking the 202 to the Standard.
The Blackheath to Charlton train line will be closed for ten weeks this summer for more work on the ancient tunnel it travels through.

Jesus mate, its not difficult if you want better roads and services they need to be paid for. If you can't afford it you can drive to the nearest free bridge and cross there. Also its Wanstead ? hardly the end of the world for public transport.

My son was going to try this instead of the 202......as the SL is free. Was going to do a trail run at the weekend when he & his gf go to the fair on Blackheath.

I wondered where the best stop would be before the SL bus hits the Blackwall Tunnel approach ? Coming back I think it stops at the Sun in the Sands (but no idea where).

My route now on matchdays is the 261 from Bromley to Lee, then the 202 to the Royal Standard, and then the 380 to the ground (or any bus to Charlton Village - usually the 53 or 54).

Not sure I'm in fit enough condition to walk from Blackheath or even the Royal Standard so the SL is out for now.
  • For the fair I reckon get off at Royal Parade round the corner at the top of the Village by the church, and walk across the heath towards the gate for Greenwich Park.
As well as the fair, Zippo's circus is up on the heath too at the moment.
  • Went through the Silvertown tunnel this evening for the 1st time. Wow, what can I say. Drove into the opening of it from north side of the river and exited it to the south of the river. Absolutely majestic. Might give it a go going the other way tomorrow. Exciting times.
  • So from this picture the left lane is Blackwall bound, the middle lane is Silvertown bound and the oncoming lane is from Blackwall?   Out of shot is the Southbound Silvertown.  So it's Blackwall, Silvertown, Blackwall, Silvertown?

As pointed out in the video it will be a bit hairy when emerging from Blackwall south and crossing Silvertown's traffic to make the first exit to Greenwich.

From the YouTube video, it looks like that section is a 30mph zone now, to compensate for vehicles wanting to leave at the first Greenwich junction.

The road layout looks pretty dangerous - trying to cut across the Silvertown traffic for the first exit will be a challenge. Interesting to see if it does lead to accidents.
