Fantastic Yusho for Onosato, despite his defeat to Hoshoryu, but I’m really pleased that H achieved partial redemption with his brilliant throw today to take down the big lad. Sets up the rivalry beautifully.

Interesting fact - not a single one of the top 10 Maegashira had a winning record. So the only candidate to replace Takayasu as Komusubi is Oshoma, 10-5 at M6. He’s really come good over the last few Basho. There will be a big churn at the top of the rank and filers with Onokatsu and Kinbozan also 10-5 at M8 and Aonishiki’s brilliant 11-4 at M9.
Could see all 3 of them and Hakuoho (8-7 at M7) filling the top Maegashira rankings in July, meaning they’ll be facing the top boys early doors. Gonna be a fantastic Basho in Nagoya with 2 Yokozuna and some serious contenders for Ozeki going for it.
So pleased Sadanoumi won a Fighting Spirit Prize, along with Aonishiki. Sadanoumi’s the oldest Rikishi ever to win that Prize at 38. Crowning moment, his take down of the wallopatonk Nishikigi by a Fisherman’s Throw. Very humble, very determined fighter - top bloke from Kumamoto.
One new star arrives, the greatest former star departs. Sadly the clash of personalities of ex-Hakuho and the Sumo Board has reached breaking point. Coach Miyagino (aka Hakuho) has been badly treated IMHO with the prolonged subjugation of his stable to Isegahana (where shortly Terunofuji will become Oyakata) and he’s had enough. He’ll shortly quit the Sumo Association to pursue business interests. Good luck to the GOAT.
The new banzuke, Aonishiki is up to Maegashira 1 as anticipated, no easy matches for him at the next Bashou. Wakatakakage back to Sekiwake in what should be a good Basho for him. Onosato surely the favourite again.
Watch out for Oshoma - been practising well and employing more aggressive tactics. Shin-Komusubi often have a torrid time and make an instant return to the rank and filers but he could buck the trend and stick around in Sanyaku.
Disaster for Daieisho, who had never missed a match day save for Covid, and with a realistic chance for Ozeki, is OUT for the whole of the July tournament with a torn calf muscle. So too is stablemate Endo.
Day 1 sees Kotozakura v Aonishiki, Onosato v Oshoma and Hoshoryu v nemesis Takayasu. Gonna be a belter.

Half way point and Oshoma has had a very tough time. Kusano has lived up to the hype so far and will now take on the Sanyakus, should be very interesting. It's almost certain Aonishiki will be a Sanyaku at the next Bashou, he's proven himself to not be a flash in the pan. Wakatakakage has looked superb but not consistent enough in this Bashou to be pushing for Ozeki, that performance will come very shortly though. Hoshoryu is still not looking like a Yokozuna and Onosato is looking human!
If you want highlights slightly quicker, there's a bloke on YouTube who uses the handle Don Don Sumo who gets a highlights video up fairly quickly. He includes replays with text commentary as to what tactics the wrestlers are trying which seems to be enough to satisfy YouTube about copyright issues. He also does brief highlights of the second division, but never anything below that.
I'd say on balance NHK is the original and best, but if speed's your priority it's worth a look.

I think Takayasu’s defeat of Aonishiki was interesting. Aonishiki has used that inner thigh tap 4 times to win in this tournament- brilliantly it has to be said - but Taka was waiting for it and it didn’t topple him. He is brilliant is Aonishiki and he will make Ozeki within a year if he stays injury-free but opponents will adjust and he’ll have to continue to evolve his skills. I’m sure he will as he has the talent and it will be fascinating to watch.
Aonishiki reminds me a bit of a Beckham free-kick. You know what he's going to do but you can't prevent it. His opponents have tried a lot of slapping recently to counter it, However he also has other tricks up his sleeve and is a very serious prospect. Sadly it looks like Shishi will be yoyoing between Juryou.
