Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce the signing of Jamaican international Amari'i Bell following the expiry of his contract at Luton Town.

The versatile left-sided defender, who has been capped 28 times by his country, arrives with plenty of experience having featured 216 times in English football’s top two tiers.

Bell has put pen to paper on a two-year contract to become Nathan Jones’ fourth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Sonny CareyThomas Kaminski and Tanto Olaofe.

The 31-year-old said: “It’s a fresh start for me and one that I’m looking forward to as Charlton are on the way back up. It’s another chance to work with Nathan who is a great manager that knows how to get the best out of his players, and he certainly does for me. It’s going to be a great time.”

Manager Nathan Jones added: "Amari'i's someone I know well. I signed him at Luton and he did fantastically well for me. He knows how I want to play, he has Championship and Premier League experience, and he's a wonderful athlete with pace and power. He will add to the group and we're really delighted because left-sided centre-halves are very difficult to come by."

Born in Burton-upon-Trent, Bell joined Birmingham City’s academy in 2011 and enjoyed his first taste of senior football during a loan stint at Nuneaton Town. After making his Championship debut for Blues in 2014, he enjoyed further loan spells Kidderminster Harriers, Mansfield Town, Swindon Town and Gillingham before making a permanent move to Fleetwood Town.

It was at the Cod Army where Bell was able to establish himself, making 137 appearances for the club across three seasons and earning himself a move to Blackburn Rovers during their 2017/18 promotion-winning campaign. The defender was also named in the PFA League One Team of the Year that season.

Bell swiftly adapted to the Championship and joined Jones’ Luton in 2021, playing an important part in their promotion to the Premier League in 2022/23. He played 157 games for the Hatters in total, including 21 top-flight appearances.

His first international cap came in 2021 against the USA, while his most recent international goal was scored last month in the CONCACAF Gold Cup against Panama.

Well if this goes anything like my Football manager save, we get promoted from league one, we sign Armari Bell , we get promoted again and we settle as an upper mid table prem team. Happy days!
Must be causious though. We are only truley back when our fans are complaining about upper Premier League mid table

Feels like we're focusing on Championship experience this season, with a sprinkling of potential

Said it a few times on the Expectations thread, we're not going to be exciting to watch, doubt we'll get plaudits from opposition fans for the way we play at times, expect us to be pretty gritty, but reckon we'll get the job done

How the tables have turned, I remember we were all so jealous of the way Luton were being run and getting to the premier league , now we’ve got half their players and above them.

Someone needs to change the thread title, as the article says it's a TWO year deal.

Interesting NJ calls him a left sided CB, though the article calls him versatile as we know he can play LB/LWB.

Title says 3 year but it’s 2 years in the article, which feels right at his age.

Hopefully as a minimum gives us good competition for Gillesphey and Edwards, and takes pressure off Enslin too without blocking his pathway with it only being a 2 year deal.

Good to have another player considered to have pace and power, as there’s no doubt we need more of that in the Championship.

Good signing, versatile player, didn’t look out of place in the Premier League for them not so long ago.

Can't say I know much about him, but sounds a decent signing, proven at this level

Must be cautious though. We are only truly back when our fans are complaining about the amount of chips!

Yep, we’ve signed a couple of players who have recent experience of being relegated from the Championship so we’re shaping up nicely for the season ahead!!
