I don't know if it's just a league one thing or what but there's definitely a perception by some that players who aren't flying into sliding tackles or throwing elbows around with wild abandon are "lightweight" or "shirking."Garrymanilow said:'Lightweight' is becoming the go-to criticism of players by people who don't actually know what it is about the player they don't like. It's effective because it covers every possible assumed failing without actually having to explain it or think about it. Gilbert? Lightweight. Berry? Lightweight. Coventry? Lightweight. This season I'm sure I've seen Gillesphey, Small, Campbell, Godden and Docherty referred to that way as well. It's absolutely meaningless.
Coventry was a very early victim, he didn't have Dobson's blood and thunder athletic approach and was judged harshly when his own style has proven just as effective.23 -
Tbf to me, I meant lightweight more in terms of not good enough to dominate midfield in the Championship. To dictate the game. To pull the strings.thenewbie said:

If we get there we need to compete, we’re not going to dominate week in week out.Woodwork said:

For me Coventry is more likely to do that consistently enough than Docherty or Berry. That’s not to say he shouldn’t have some competition, but there are other areas I’d hope we’d look to improve on before Coventry.3 -
That's fair but dominating games that way isn't really the style we play. It's more about high energy and consistent pressure - the other team might have more of the ball but that doesn't mean they can do much with it.Woodwork said:

And in those terms I think Coventry's going to be absolutely fine in the Championship, we would need midfield upgrades but he's not one I'd be concerned about.1 -
I agree.Woodwork said:
The rivalry isn’t hate filled enough for it to be a problem… as demonstrated by all the examples mentioned. Millwall would have been very happy to employ Curbs in his prime post Charlton. They took Seed, after all, the man that turned Charlton from Third Division (South) strugglers into title contenders.Richard J said:
Interesting how football changes because 50 years ago the biggest Millwall legend of them all Harry Cripps was an integral part of a Charlton promotion squad.Crispywood said:
Woodman is going to Man United as a 3rd choice keeper. Also doubt arguably a Millwall legend will join us as it won’t go down well with either fanbase. If we’re looking for a left sided defender, Ciaran Brown out of contract at Oxford in his prime and won their POTY 2 seasons in a row and actually a club we can better in wages if we do go up.Lincsaddick said:Andy Woodman's goalkeeper son Freddie has been released by Preston (as has Paddy Bauer)
A player I really like (might have suffered nasty injury though), Murray Wallace has been released by Millwall .. Woodman is 28, Wallace32, the later as a versatile, VERY good defender would be a perfect squad member covering central and left sided defence
In fact there is a host of 30 somethings now 'on the market' after being released from Champ clubs.
I don't go for the 'too old' theory. Look at Godden and Berry and the integral parts they played for us this season (with 1 game to go)
I also think football has changed in how supporter view this. Pat Jennings would be given red carpet treatment and both Arsenal and Spurs whereas Sol Campbell wouldn't. Denis Law has a statue at Old Trafford despite the fact his last act there was scoring a goal which symbolically sen United down.0 -
And this is a well reasoned counter argument to be fair.thenewbie said:

On the subject of championship singings if we do go up, I hope I put us in a good light here.

I don't think I'm too far off based on this thread and others6 -
Agreed we’re definitely only 5 players off a solid championship XI but as we saw last time in the championship and even times this season If we lose certain players we really lack the quality in depth to be able cope. Best case scenario we are pretty much championship ready, worse case scenario we still need a lot of building to do.Braziliance said:On the subject of championship singings if we do go up, I hope I put us in a good light here.

Tbf past out starting XI we would struggle, definitely need more options. Whichever league we are in next season we need a bit more cover on a few spots.Crispywood said:

That Gilbraith fella would be a decent signing for us, and a realistic prospect too, I reckon.14

He was excellent and would be good competition for Docherty. Orient do something a bit different with him coming into the middle from right back and Clare covering the space he vacates which gives him space to run on the ball through the middle. We play very differently to that but regardless I think he'd be a very good option in the middle if he can put in the yards Doc does1
-
Is he their 22?0
-
I’d take Donley on loan too.5
-
This is going to be very important to whatever signings we make/attempt - they can have all the ability in the world but if they don't buy Jones' vision and can't/won't do all the pressing and physical off the ball work he demands then it isn't happening.Garrymanilow said:He was excellent and would be good competition for Docherty. I'm not saying Gilbraith ISN'T someone who might fit that mould but I'll be very surprised if we don't miss/pass on some otherwise talented players whose attitude isn't what NJ demands.3 -
Phil Chapple ripping up his "if we stay down" list.36

And Berry has scored as many league goals as TC...Gisappointed said:All mediocre scorers on Statbank. Doc, the skipper, was dropped for a few matches because he was so crap. Berry our only 10 until January. Our main weakness has been in midfield. Even Coventry with his backpasses was poor until Xmas, but we have never controlled games despite the experience of LB and GD.
So why hasn't he got a song?
If they get us to the Championship , I'll write every one of them a song.5 -

Would absolutely take Donley on loan , looks a quality player and championship is the obvious next step for him.4 -
We've already shown interest in him as well, just depends whether it was an Andy Scott name, as Nathan apparently didnt want him, because he wants to develop the likes of Anderson.MarcusH26 said:LargeAddick said:I’d take Donley on loan too.

Hopefully there was a slight reluctance as well, because we werent sure how he'd do in Senior Football, with this being his first loan away from Spurs... Now we know he might be an asset, we might be interested this time.2 -

I can understand not wanting to take a teenager on their first loan when you have Karoy , but now he's a proven quantity in Senior Football with a season under his belt it might make a bit more sense to NJ hopefully.2 -
A few bits of news from today that haven't been talked about yet:
1. Alan Nixon says we're looking at Jordan Gabriel to replace Thierry Small
"Charlton are keen to sign Jordan Gabriel as a replacement for wanted man Thierry Small.
The Addicks have lined up Gabriel since he left Blackpool on a free and could make their move as they expect Small to move on.
Gabriel is also fancied by Port Vale and Mansfield as he decides where to go."
2. Alan Nixon also said Blackburn Rovers and Leyton Orient are after Thierry Small (although that was before the game)7 -
I quite like the Orient keeper on lon from Spurs, even though he’s cost them goals against us this season! Similarly, Kelman was kept very quiet today but is a great striker - but maybe QPR want to keep him after a great season in L11
-
Thought he was anonymous today.LargeAddick said:I’d take Donley on loan too.1 -
I like the look of Owen Goodman, Palace keeper on loan at AFC Wimbledon. Kept a lot of clean sheets this season.6

Gabriel sound like more of a replacement for Tennai Watson.Foxycafc said:A few bits of news from today that haven't been talked about yet:

To be honest, if we’re looking at bringing in another GK and I hope we are, then I’d much prefer a senior pro with good experience. I don’t see the point of bringing in a young loanee.4

After the play off final, our first signing?
