Deadline Day from Pg.641 - Summer 2025 Charlton Athletic Transfer Rumours

Problem with this is that if we don't go up we will lose Small, Ramsay and maybe TC. To get automatics next season in League 1 we will have to bring in players as good as them, and strengthen the midfield.6
-
You make some good points but I think Alex can only play in the middle of a three, he struggles at RCB because he had no full back experience. Zack will move in front of him because he can cover both and RB. He then becomes surplus to requirements and cant be happy with his lack of game time this year.Crispywood said:
Would argue A.Mitchell would actually suit championship football more than L1. Less time more time on the ball more time defending the box probably plays to his advantagesGisappointed said:Assuming we go up:-

All about opinions, but, if you’re talking about being good enough as first team Championship regulars in a team that steers clear of relegation places. Being brutal…Dazzler21 said:If we look at the current squad, my take on who is good enough is as follows:

Very harsh on players like Jones and Coventry who I think will step up comfortably. They’ve played huge parts in our excellent defensive record this season. Improve central midfield and up front and that’ll take a lot pressure off them too.Woodwork said:

Seems uninformed to write off so many academy players under 21. Several of them capped multiple times as full internationals and can only improve.
I've been called a Troll due to controversial posts. I wouldn't elevate you to that level.1 -
That's going to create a hell of a shopping list and of course for contracted players can they be moved on.Woodwork said:

For the no players there is the question of "get rid" or loan out or keep as "back up".
For instance.
Ahadme get rid
Anderson back up
Dixon loan out
BTW what do people think the individual value of our players is?

Almost every year when players report back for pre season someone will make the step up. We have several youngsters in that category. Fingers crossed.7

It isn’t writing them off. It is just brutal opinion on them being ‘oven ready’ lower mid-table Championship starters. I think 7-8 new players as first teamers are needed to be competitive. Just an opinion. Doesn’t mean some of those can’t play a role as part of squad.Gisappointed said:Seems uninformed to write off so many academy players under 21. If you look at the improvement in TC over the close season it’s really difficult to say which youngster will or won’t step up the level required but I agree if we do manage to get promoted ( which I personally don’t think we will unfortunately) we will need a busy window to stand a chance of staying up but I also think our owners will provide the funds required2

Stick to whittling my friend, football isn't for you20 -
He played 16 times for Rotherham on loan in the Championship & no Championship club came in for when he was available that summer, despite being a good age & with a good pedigree (West Ham academy). Now, maybe you have a better eye than most Championship scouts, but I doubt it. We are all entitled to an opinion of course, but mine is that he would be too light weight for a solid Championship side looking to win most home games & be hard to beat away.sam3110 said:

Players do however grow, and get better. Coventry is nowhere near lightweight. He plays 90 minutes every game, one of the highest featured players this season, is one of the best tacklers in this league statistically, and rarely looks in bother.
Had a difficult last few games, but it's the play-offs, and nerves are a factor. Fairly confident Coventry can make the step up. He's better than some midfielders that have played for us in the championship.

Those 16 games were in half a season, he went there in January and he’s improved since then. I think needing more time to develop in L1 is probably why no Championship club’s came in for him.Woodwork said:

I think that’s my problem… nerves shouldn’t be affecting a midfielder coming into his prime, playing for a promotion chasing team. I thought he looked a little lost v Wrexham too (may be tainted by result & overall team performance).Braziliance said:

Interesting that one of the other rumoured players we are interested in is the No.5 Bradley Ibrahim... Good pedigree having come through the Arsenal academy.Braziliance said:Lightweight players don't get these kind of numbers either 👍🏻

Type of signing that would fit in with the new Under 21/23 scouting role looking for hidden gems.2 -
Didn't we nip in ahead of Sheffield Wednesday last season to sign him?Woodwork said:

Am sure lightweight players don't get considered for International Duty either, even if it is just Ireland, and he's either been called up (to face England), or he's constantly been on the standby lists.7 -

Have faith in him to get better. I don't think its anything to do with his physical attributes, I think it's lack of game time prior to us and confidence. That will grow the more he plays, this has been his first proper season at a club, need to remember that as well, all the loans and bench warming when he was younger probably didn't help.0 -
Personally, and it is just that, a personal opinion, I think good midfielders don’t need stats to back them up. You can see it with your eyes. In my opinion, in three big games (Wrexham, Wycombe x2) I didn’t come away thinking ‘what a midfielder’. So I wouldn’t have much faith in games v the top 12-15 Championship teams.Braziliance said:Lightweight players don't get these kind of numbers either 👍🏻

Yeah I like the sound. Even more so looking at that list though is Harvey Knibbs. Tall, strong, technical and can clearly get stuck in. I think he'd be a dream player for Nathan Jones.995632 said:
Interesting that one of the other rumoured players we are interested in is the No.5 Bradley Ibrahim... Good pedigree having come through the Arsenal academy.Braziliance said:Lightweight players don't get these kind of numbers either 👍🏻

Type of signing that would fit in with the new Under 21/23 scouting role looking for hidden gems.1 -
Would this be the guy who 108 Charlton fans awarded an 8.88 rating and MOTM to in the only genuinely crunch all-or-nothing game we've played recently? ChristWoodwork said:
I think that’s my problem… nerves shouldn’t be affecting a midfielder coming into his prime, playing for a promotion chasing team. I thought he looked a little lost v Wrexham too (may be tainted by result & overall team performance).Braziliance said:
I see your point that he didn't play much, and there wasn't much interest in him.Woodwork said:
He played 16 times for Rotherham on loan in the Championship & no Championship club came in for when he was available that summer, despite being a good age & with a good pedigree (West Ham academy). Now, maybe you have a better eye than most Championship scouts, but I doubt it. We are all entitled to an opinion of course, but mine is that he would be too light weight for a solid Championship side looking to win most home games & be hard to beat away.sam3110 said:

Jones I accept could prove me wrong. Coventry just seems too lightweight (only imo).Scoham said:
Very harsh on players like Jones and Coventry who I think will step up comfortably. They’ve played huge parts in our excellent defensive record this season. Improve central midfield and up front and that’ll take a lot pressure off them too.Woodwork said:

Yeah but "stats aren't everything" remember, apparently it's what you see with your own eyes.Leuth said:

Woodwork watched CC in 3 big games and didn't see a Roy Keane regen so we may as well bin him off0 -
I guess we’ll find out one way or another, as either he’ll step up or a Championship club with make a big money offer if they read the ratings.0
-
Will we find out one way or another? - A club can make a bid for him, which they'll no doubt make in private, but even if we stay in League One, we're in no obligation to sellWoodwork said:I guess we’ll find out one way or another, as either he’ll step up or a Championship club with make a big money offer if they read the ratings.1 -
It will surely be a big bid if he is a genuine Championship level midfielder, so you imagine the club would accept it. Especially if he wanted to make the step up.ForeverAddickted said:

There is a place in between where he can be a solid lower Championship player, a good L1 midfielder, but not someone a club will bid several million for.Woodwork said:

Would they...? - When they've already turned down bids for the likes of Jones, Campbell and Leaburn in recent times... Maybe we're not such mugs like we are when it comes to selling players anymore... How would you know.Woodwork said:

Im glad you conveniently skirted over the fact that I pointed out that a Championship club tried to sign him (Sheffield Wednesday) right before he joined us.3
