January Transfer Window (rumours + actuals)

If we go up it’ll be because we have a decent number of players who can play at Championship level. Players like Coventry, Edwards, Leaburn and TC also have the potential to get there, alongside the more obvious players in Jones, Ramsay and Small.Grapevine mentioned the fee for REG - I’ve heard from an Orient fan £15k is the only up front fee they’ve paid recently, so I doubt we got enough to pay for Gilbert’s loan. I was also told they only signed him due to Beckles being injured very recently and them having no more loan slots to use.
Given it’s clear Jones didn’t rate him and Orient need cover, I don’t think this points toward us getting a decent fee, more that we had an opportunity to move on a player Jones doesn’t rate.3 -

He wanted the squad reduced in size and got rid of players he knew he wasn’t going to use but on the whole was content with what he had left. I think Gilbert being the exception, in a role that even the doziest of fans could see we’re were in need of. I’m sadly confident that we’ll lose Small in the summer and he’ll definitely be hard to replace. Just like every summer we’ll need to rebuild in order to go for it next season but how many times have we all said that.
Tennai Watson
Chuks Aneke
Thierry Small
Aaron Henry
5 or 6 minimum.1 -
Assuming we don’t lose anyone else in the summer and if we are talking regular first teamers only…If we didn’t go up I’d say we probably need 2-3 players in the summer.
If we did go up I’d say 5-6 (a goalkeeper, a centre back, two midfielders, two forwards).
Anything above and beyond that is likely for squad depth.1 -
I’d be alright with this team starting in the Championship:
NEW
Ramsay - Jones - NEW - Edwards
Coventry - Docherty
Small - NEW - TC
Leaburn
Ideally we add quality to it so we have more options but as a starting XI I think that gives us a decent chance of not being a bottom three side.1 -

If 8 of our current players were championship material we would be a lot closer to Birmingham, Wrexham and Wycombe than we currently are.33 -

We’d have said the same about Bowyer’s side. Players like Bielik, Aribo, Phillips and Dijksteel were rated much higher by the time we won at Wembley compared to earlier in the season. TC and Small are heading in that direction, and Leaburn has the ability to get there.
Not saying the same will happen, but we’ve built a decent core of player. Just a shame we didn’t add to it as much as we hoped. The ownership and perhaps Jones are putting a lot of faith in players staying fit and academy players stepping up.4 -
I’d remind people about Portsmouth last season. They didn’t exactly tear up the division but they were consistently the best team in the league over the season. Back in The Championship they look like relegation candidates although one place above the drop zone at present. Just my opinion but I think the step up from league one to Championship is greater now than it was perhaps just five seasons ago. Id like to think that Charltons current squad with a few additions might make the step up but I just don’t. Wasn’t it just a short time ago that we were truly awful and although that’s seemed to have been addressed we’re not even a side that you’d bank on getting top six. To think we’re nearly a Championship squad with a couple of players coming in is to me cloud cuckoo land.18

I’d love to know what winger we really missed out on, as the lad from Sunderland seemed a 3rd or 4th choice, after our top picks didn’t happen, probably the reason we couldn’t get it done in time. Can any of the ITKs shed any light? Were we punching too high again and those players got snapped up by Championship clubs?0

Most of their players there now were also there last season and they look the most likely to stay up.4

Think the gap is widening every year between Championship and League 1. You'd probably need to be spending millions on promotion to remain competitive. I think Ramsay,Jones,Edwards,Coventry, Small and Leaburn would make the jump quite comfortably and the likes of Godden, Docherty and TC would be good squad players still at that level but you'd need major surgery on the rest of the squad to get it competitive.1

A few players away from a championship squad? Do me a favour.
Plymouth are rock bottom and a player they wanted to shift starts for us every game. Hull are 2 points away from the relegation zone and let Docherty go to us.
We are miles away from being capable to compete in that league, we would need a load of new signings.
We have a few players who you could say might be able to play at the level above, not definitely.
I think Lloydy, Ramsay, Small & Edwards** have a decent chance of playing at the level above.
I wouldn't be too surprised to see Leaburn, TC and Coventry to hack it. Maybe Docherty and Mitchell.
As for the rest, no way. I think only the 4 I mentioned in the first category I'd be comfortable seeing start at the level above. The rest need to show more.
Anyway, not worth something worrying about yet.7 -

Spot on.
Our fans are either mad, delusional, have manic swings from one game to the next or Masochistic.
Many are all 4 but personally I have only 3 of the above traits as I don't have manic swings about football since seeking treatment when we lost at Millwall 2-1 after being 1-0 up in the Solly red card match.
That match on 'Bad Friday' made me feel lower than a Dachshund's testicles.
