At least part of the issue if indeed it is an issue with this window was that Jones wasn’t pressing the owners for reinforcements. He wanted the squad reduced in size and got rid of players he knew he wasn’t going to use but on the whole was content with what he had left. I think Gilbert being the exception, in a role that even the doziest of fans could see we’re were in need of. I’m sadly confident that we’ll lose Small in the summer and he’ll definitely be hard to replace. Just like every summer we’ll need to rebuild in order to go for it next season but how many times have we all said that.
I agree with your post but I'm not sure I'd call the summer another 'rebuild'. The only players out of contract in the summer are:
Tennai Watson Chuks Aneke Thierry Small Aaron Henry
It would be nice to be more like a normal club and not need 10+ signings every summer.
Summer will imho still require a fairly significant recruitment. I’d suggest a replacement for Small if he goes which I expect. Competition for Gilesphey, replace Aneke, replace Watson and get in a GK. That’s without anyone being sold. I’d like to think a striker would come in. I’d say that quite a rebuild.
Well ideally McIntyre does well enough to convert into a permanent so you're only talking 3 (I think 4 as Leaburn could go) signings, that's pretty quiet for most L1 clubs. If we go up I wouldn't be surprised to see Leaburn and Small stay so then that would be 2 plus a couple of places where we might need an upgrade
If we go up we will need to upgrade a lot more than just a couple. 5 or 6 minimum.
Possibly but those upgrades are upgrades we need anyway, LCB, GK and ST. I think Doc and Coventry are solid enough as a midfield base to build on, Small, Edwards & Ramsay are probably good enough to play in the Championship and Jones definitely is. I think we'd actually be replacing the same players regardless of what league we're in, we'd just have different targets
Ramsay and Small are championship level footballers . Jury out on the rest .
Lloyd Jones? Conor Coventry? Josh Edwards? Wasn't Doc already playing regularly at that level? TC has interest from the level we want to get to and I'm pretty confident Miles can step up. We'd certainly need a number of incomings should we go up but id like to think we're starting a better position than 2 players who can step up. We had Bradley Pritchard tearing it up in the champ when we went up under Powell
We have only just got to grips with League 1 (ish!) because Lloyd Jones got fit and Small moved wide and we stopped humping it long. There is literally no way we could survive in the Championship with just 2 or 3 more players. Look at Derby - in freefall - losing their last 7 - CBT was our main outlet last year - he can't get games for them. Kashin is better than Lloyd Jones - they have the best goalkeeper in the Championship - etc etc
Rocks in our head Charlton fans. Absolutely delusional a snide that has a "sniff" of the play offs for the first time in 5 years, can suddenly operate in the Championship!
A few players away from a championship squad? Do me a favour.
Plymouth are rock bottom and a player they wanted to shift starts for us every game. Hull are 2 points away from the relegation zone and let Docherty go to us.
We are miles away from being cable to compete in that league, we would need a load of new signings.
We have a few players who you could say might be able to play at the level above, not definitely.
I think Lloydy, Ramsay, Small & Edwards** have a decent chance of playing at the level above.
I wouldn't be too surprised to see Leaburn, TC and Coventry to hack it. Maybe Docherty and Mitchell.
As for the rest, no way. I think only the 4 I mentioned in the first category I'd be comfortable seeing start at the level above. The rest need to show more.
Maybe we should just stop this second half of the season seeing as we want to be promoted but don't have the squad to even attempt survival next year? Might aswell play the U21s for the rest of the season and give em some game time.
Really disappointed with the incoming business. Methven said it would be a mistake not to bring in the attacking players needed to give us a real chance and how it would be poor if they looked back at the end of the season and didn’t back Jones and sign the players.
Well, we have got in a player with decent pedigree on loan from Middlesbrough but hasn’t played much football and failed to bring in any other attacking player. We lack pace with TC and Small and that was so clear to see.
They’ll say about streamlining the squad etc but we lack quality in depth. An injury to the wrong player and we risk our season being derailed.
They’ve let us down in my opinion. They had all month to sign someone for that. They failed to do so.
Really bad business in my eyes. Shows they weren’t serious about promotion
I for one cannot understand why in Gods name they would actively plan that…..for what reason could it benefit the investors, directors, the players, the management, the fans……..or anyone come to that? Maybe you’d like to explain your weird opinion. 🧐
I can’t remember anyone saying we were going for top 2 this season , in fact the target was to see an improvement on last season and I think we already hit that ? That’s why we were told when Jones took over he was the manager to oversee the 4 year plan ,,,,, in that time they wanted to build a squad not only to get promotion but to stay in the championship comfortably, and we are not there yet .. it would be a disaster to go up and come straight back down.
We had two windows and most likey need another one to finish getting a squad together , we still have players like Aneke that need to be moved on before we can seriously start building that squad .
Said many times you’re not going to undo 10/15 years of assist stripping and poor management in 12 months , as well as building a structure to work from.

Another Charlton Life extreme.
It's ok to believe/want/think this squad could achieve promotion, but be aware of, or, discuss the teams chances at the level above.

You’re forgetting the fact that you consistently praised every one of those owners that we’ve had in that 10/15 year period.
You were even saying on the other forum that supporters should start chanting for Nimer, Farnell & Southall to show appreciation to them for saving the club.

If we don't succeed this season it is because our squad is not strong enough and needs to be improved so as not to fail again next season.
Obviously the hope would be that our best players stay and renew/improve their contracts, but as it stands Small would be out of contract and TC and Leaburn would have a year left each. So I would imagine a high possibility of all leaving if we remain in L1.
That will be a huge re-build to simply replace that talent, let alone then improve so we don't fail again.

Ah yeah fair enough you tend to sit on the fence when putting your view across so can see why you'd call out the extreme. Is it being wary or is it just general pessimism from years of being ground down as a club?

That would frighten the owners , to think couldn’t even buy two players in this window.
Lets get working on Division One first please. Still a few more months left of this season and who knows how many of our squad will be wanting to leave come the second week of May.
Not even in the top 6 in league one but apparently have a squad that could compete in the championship. This fanbase 😂
Go through the list of players though and the vast majority of them I think will play at Championship or better level at some point in their career.
If we happened to get promoted this season then why wouldn’t it be next season?
No-one said anything about this current team being competitive at Championship level - the implication is that with two or three high quality additions in key areas, the rest of the squad we now have in a good basis for a team that won’t immediately be doomed to coming back down.

I think you've misunderstood the point of my post to be honest.
A few people have said they believe we have a few players good enough for the championship, then a few others haven't. Your response is sarcastically saying the team may as well not bother which looks like it's aimed at the people who think we don't?
It's just another one of those examples on here where a poster tries to put words into someone else's post with an extreme example/hypothetical.
I don't think I saw one person say that we shouldn't even bother going for promotion cause we might not be good enough in the championship, just discussing the possibility that if we do go up, certain players might not cut it.
Just watch the Championship highlights... The quality of the football and the average player are now so far beyond this league.
In the recent past, Rotherham have been far more successful in L1 than us, with three promotions. In fact, the last promoted Rotherham side was one of the most impressive L1 teams I've seen at The Valley.
Those three promotions were followed by three instant relegations.
Plymouth, Portsmouth and Derby all fighting for their lives this season.
We would need far more than a couple of signings. We'd need a LOT of investment to even survive at the next level.

Is the suggestion that I’m oversimplifying? Because I definitely think looking only at Portsmouth and Derby, but not Oxford (who on paper were the weakest side promoted) is a big simplification in itself because it fits the narrative.
Obviously there’s a step up in quality. And I trust 7/8 of the players currently at the club to be able to make their careers at that level or above long term ie they would handle that step up if/when we do get promoted.
We have another 7-8 who are fine as emergency back ups for a year or two at that level as well (eg Godden, Mitchell… Kanu, Tennai at a stretch).
And then to fill out a squad we’d want 5-6 good additions to make sure we are continually moving forward.
That’s everything I was saying from the beginning and it’s probably not that far away from what everyone else is thinking I’d hope. If people think we need 15 ish players then I think that’s very wide of the mark.

Genuinely I think to be competitive at that level and not being in a constant relegation scrap I think you'd need to be looking at a £10m+ investment in the squad minimum. The championship is basically premier league 2 now with the money being thrown around.
Let's just say we'd probably have to break our transfer record at least (I think it's still Euell?)

Given what we know and have witnessed there is zero chance our current owners will fork out for two or three high quality additions as that suggests high transfer fee’s.
They will rely on youth and selling to fund any incoming’s
To my Knowledge most teams that get promoted have players that the leap is too much and need replacing. That is a riddle in May, if and when. Forest went for 23 new players and now in the 2nd season they are reaping the rewards of that even though some were abject failures and some were great successes. Plus many didn't get a game !
As a fan of CAFC I really don't think the odds are very good BUT Jones/Fleming have to convince the slim down Squad that we can finish in the top 6 and imbue belief. 🤞🏻 Nathan has learnt from the 1st half of the season when we were turgid and flakey. As fans we can be Callum or Supaclive/Nicholas. The majority of us are between the polar opposite outlooks and reactions when we have setbacks.
I/we can only observe and hope that the result of the Winter Window hasn't stopped our upward movement. Both Gilbert and McIntyre are not certainties to succeed but we live in hope.
Charlton out 8 Charlton in 2
Nathan Jones will either be a Welsh Wizard or a Welsh Wazzock depending on a lot of luck that we don't pick up injuries and the squad can gel as they have in the past 10 games (Not Rotherham away)

Early signs point to us not being big spenders I agree.
We’re 6th!! Stevenage, Barnsley, Orient & Stockport to come shortly.
Enjoy it!! Matches that mean something at the right end of the table! Exciting.
I’m going to - realistically, a league 1 promotion battle / attempt is about as exciting as we can realistically hope for for the foreseeable - a championship one is gonna take a bit of time but I don’t think surviving in the championship is as difficult as some believe - we missed out on staying up very narrowly last time and that was with Roland offering no financial support and an injury decimated squad - just Lyle Taylor not downing tools would probably have kept us up

At the top end it definitely has. Some of the fees are mad and the players that are ok with staying for a one season stint in the second tier is probably at the highest level that it’s ever been.
But being the fourth worst team or better is still well within the realms of possibility. Oxford are proving it this season, as did Plymouth the season before.

The quality has improved massively since then.
The money might have, I’m not convinced the players have
