This is our latest resident- Rachael. Horrifyingly she’s from a free range farm.

I’m struggling to work out which way up she is !!!
Dreadful - but bless you for giving her a forever home
Our 1 remaining Chicken - no idea how she keeps going - stopped laying eggs years ago - but quite happy and mouthy still 😃5 -
Wow, that’s awful, no animal deserves to be treated like that. Hope she recovers ok.3

Bless her cotton socks( if she had any)
Is she indoors & being given extra special Arsencare ?1 -

is the feather loss because Racheal is/was stressed out or do the chickens fight in their overcrowded conditions?
My other half insists on purchasing eggs and chicken marked 'free range' but I'm sceptical how much difference that really makes and whether we should be insisting on higher welfare than that1 -
I always spend extra on eggs for this exact reason.
I genuinely think theres a market out there for expensive, but well-treated animal meat3 -

The other problem with free range is that all you need to call yourself free range is to say the hens have access to the outside. But if you imagine a barn with 3000 chickens tightly packed in then not all will get out. The space you must have outside is a minimum of 9 hens per square metre. Not exactly free range. It depends on the farm. Some are superb(rare) and have orchards for the hens to roam in and they sit under trees in the sun. Others are awful.
if you can buy them from a place you’ve visited that’s probably the best.Organic free range have slightly more space outside.5 -

I genuinely think theres a market out there for expensive, but well-treated animal meatParticularly in the chicken world. We rescued some broilers at 3 and a half weeks old. They were still chicks, cheeping like chicks, but pretty huge. They were very cramped in the barn and had urine burns as they were sitting in their own shit. These lot were due for slaughter at 5 weeks and then off to a well known supermarket. I don’t eat chicken but I can’t believe they taste good when they’re bred to grow huge very quickly. Although there are so many chicken fast food outlets I’m sure people would rather pay extra for better welfare. The photos are of the 3 and a half week old broilers.4 -
I just think that if we're going to eat animals, the least we can do is treat them well when they're alive, and kill them quickly.
I'm frustrated we don't follow Denmark's stance on Kosher/Halal slaughter. Inflicting pain on animals to satisfy religious beliefs is totally unacceptable.13 - Sponsored links:

Just my opinion, but Halal food should be outlawed, as per post above.7

Lola has had her bits n pieces removed this morning.
Her face lit up when she was brought out of the vets, and I cried with relief.
She's home now and sleeping.9 -

😀
Don’t know why, but this picture makes me think of this:

A young Autistic child who 3 weeks ago wouldn’t walk by our dogs in the school corridors, today walked up politely asked if could say hello and then sat with Bowyer and calmly brushed him and then told a passing class of children “She was brushing her dog Bowler”
We presented her with a framed photo of Bow and Valli for her achievements in such a short time.

The boy is an absolute menace. He proceeded to slip and fall off the sink, thankfully I was there to catch him 😂😂
