Options for if Preston is called off late on Saturday (11/1/25)

Highest level of football nearby will be AFC Fylde v Sutton in the national league, just 8 or 9 minutes by train from Preston to Kirkham and Wesham, then a mile walk north.

Blackpool v Cambridge in the league- who'd want to see that except Albie Morgan fans, now that Lyle Taylor has left Cambridge?

    These won't be everyone's cup of tea but:
    • The Harris Gallery is very good
    • Preston has two 'Spoons
    • The pubs around the railway station are nicer though
    • Avenham Park is absolutely beautiful as is the River Ribble that runs through it (you can see them from the train)
    • Brokholes Nature Reserve is a good place to spot deer
    • If it gets called off early enough you could walk the Preston Guild Wheel - of course it might not be the most comfortable of walks should the weather be bad enough to cancel a football match.

    Anyone on the 9.30 or 10.30 fast train is probably worse off as their first stop is Warrington. Here's a selection of activities from the local paper in 2023;

    The Harris Gallery is currently closed for a refit.

    I'd be surprised if Fylde's pitch survived the frost if Preston's didn't.  Blackpool also don't have undersoil heating.

    A lovely stadium at Fylde and a fans clubhouse that would grace any championship or Premier League ground.

    If Preston is off, then you can pretty much guarantee Fylde will be as well - neither of them have undersoil heating, and they're only about 20 miles apart

    The only other football option further south that i could find so far is Port Vale v Barrow in league 2; one for the die hard football addicts, and those on the M6 probably as no direct trains for Preston go via Stoke.

    For fans of Brutalist Architecture the Bus Station is ermmm....interesting.

    Had a hotel room overlooking it when riding Lands End to John O'Groats a few years back. Properly grim building.

    Moved  to Manchester (if I am thinking of the same one) in 2012 ,due to a funding issue. Could go to the Gentry Bar (at the same site where it once was) if they let us in.

    But that presumes there is common sense involved. We don't see much of that when it comes to postponements in English football at all levels.

    Went to Preston away about 70 or 71 I think, almost there & heard on the coach radio the game had been called off. We all wanted to go to Man U but the driver refused to take us as their opponents were palarse. Ended up at Stoke v Wolves, the Boothen End was a mass brawl all through the game whereas the wolves goalie at the open end got pelted with snowballs  :D

    Stay on the train for quarter of an hour to Lancaster FC. Ground £12 cash only 2 minutes walk from the station. Obviously that's £2 more than yer Preston tix, but well worth it. Also Lancaster has a few excellent pubs including in the station.

    Holiday Inn? Used to stay there a lot when working in Preston.  Love the bus station - well, love seeing it from a distance.

    I went to Tokyo Jo's one Tuesday night after our game up at Burnley was called off. I reckon one of my shoes is still stuck to the carpet now, even though the building has burnt down and been demolished! 

    Still, £1 a pint wasn't to be sniffed at, even back then.

    Woolwich had the first McDonalds, Preston the first KFC.

    You would hope that if there is no improvement expected in the weather, if the pitch is not playable at 3pm on Friday, it should be postponed. The issue has to be if there is a prospect of things improving weather wise.

    The forecast is for dry sunny weather next few days but temperatures reaching high of 2 with overnight going down to -5
