  • I'm off to Northern Ireland for the first time in December. We are planning on touring the grounds and taking in a game on the Friday night before a Saturday ferry to Stranraer to watch them.

Does anyone have any recommendations of a decent ground to watch a game?

Hey everyone, a bit of a shameless plug, but me and my friend are doing a road to Wembley this year in the FA Vase. We're going to be attending each round following the winning team of each game. So it could have us travelling up and down the country. I'm going to document the whole thing on my Instagram & Twitter and hopefully sell a few of my books along the way. I posted my first video yesterday. If you wouldn't mind showing it some support and maybe giving my account a follow, I would be truly grateful. No worries if not, though.

Cheers mate. Hopefully they're at home when we are.

Go on the website for the respective league for more info as fixtures can be changed.
There is greyhound racing in Belfast if you are interested.

Yesterday I saw Náutico v Figueirense in a Serie C game, this was played an hour after the England game finished so was able to watch our boys at the ground.
This one finished 4-0 to Náutico and was a really good game given the level.
The swimming pool and basketball court are on the same site as the football.
This is probably the best ground I have ever been to.
I love that Art Deco clubhouse, but the electrics look like @fattmatt has got the cowboy builders in again.

Ballymena Showgrounds for the Northern Ireland v England U21's

  • Last Saturday I saw Brämhults v Alingsås in a Division 5 South West regional league game in Sweden.
Alingsås won 2-1, not the best of games but both teams tried to play football on the 3g pitch rather than hoofing it up in the air.

The following day I sent to see the mighty Elfsborg away to Halmstad in the Allsvenskan, the top division out here.
We won 1-0 quite easily, Halmstad are in danger of going down.

Borås AIK v Dalsjöfors last night in a division 4 Vastra Gotaland regional league game.
The home team won easily 4-1, also missing a penalty.
This place brings back memories for me as I saw Charlton play here in 1989, on my first visit to Sweden.  I eventually lived in the flats opposite the ground in 2008.

  • Jönköping Södra 3 Lunds BK 1 in a Etan 1 Sodra game, effectively division 3 out in Sweden.
Continuous singing for 90 minutes from the home fans made for a good atmosphere even though only around 700 fans at the game.

  • On the way back from Kalmar v Elfsborg in the Allsvenskan, Elfsborg rested a few players as playing Roma in the Europa League next Thursday, we still won 3-1.
Kalmar have a relatively new ground on a very small retail park, other than a burger chain outlet there is very little to do pre-match.

Last Saturday I saw Kinna v Åsa, the away team undeservedly winning 2-1.
This was a Division 3 Sydvästra Götaland fixture, effectively a sixth division game, so the standard was not the best.

  • Sirius v Elfsborg last Sunday in the Allsvenskan.
Sirius play in a new ground built next to their old one, which is still there.
Elfsborg got beat easily 4-1, tired after beating Roma on Thursday.

This is one of my favourite grounds.
The Olympic Stadium used to be used by Djurgarden until 2013, I have seen them here three times, today people can just walk in and run around the athletics track.

Galatasaray v Elfsborg last Wednesday in the Europa League.
Elfsborg played very well for large parts of the game but 3 goals in 15 first half minutes meant the second half was going to be a bit difficult!  However, a fantastic second half saw us lose 4-3 and had the home team on the back foot for a lot of the time, this was a very low key game for them but there was a fantastic atmosphere tbf.
Such were the (unnecessary)security arrangements for this game, we had to get a coach four hours before kick-off and then get transported in, this meant being in the ground 75 minutes before kick-off.
The ground is very similar to both Benfica and Arsenal.

  • Having arranged a visit to Las Palmas to see one of my Swedish mates, I was very pleased to see there was a game 5 minutes from where he lives.
So last night we arrived in Gran Canaria at 18.45 and managed to get to my mate's place for 20 15, all good for a 20.30 k/o
Sporting San José lost 3-1 in a Spanish regional league game.
The standard was very much Kent League level, but enjoyable to watch having a drink and around 23 degrees so only in a tee-shirt.

Lech Poznan 5-2 Legia Warsaw in the Derby of Poland. Excellent atmosphere but a tad less loud than the biggest games I've seen in Italy and South America.

It was £32 for the side as it's Lech's biggest game of the season. It sold out. Their next game against Katowice is £14 for the same seat.

Poznan is a lovely town too, and flights are cheap a few weeks in advance - this is when fixture days and times are confirmed.

    Poznan-Legia or Dave's game?  :)

Lech Poznan had around 24 hours of general sale before selling out, so you just have to follow their social media.

Poland is easy now, as foreigners you used to have to buy in person. Now you can put your passport number in and buy online.

At First Vienna FC, Austria’s oldest team & founded by Englishmen (hence the name of the team is in English). The songs the fans sing are in English (“the greatest team the world has ever seen…”etc).

Vienna lost 1-0 in a performance so lacking in creativity that Charlton Athletic would be proud of it. Luckily the beer was cheap and the gluh wine was warm.

It’s actually the former national stadium of Austria (pre-1960’s or something). You can’t see it in the photos too well but the in real life you can see that the grassy banks are just overgrown terraces from decades ago. It’s a bit like watching a football match in a museum of former glories.

Had a beer with a guy pre-game who was a Uni masters student & there to study “nature in football stadiums” or summit’ ridiculous like that.
