Miles Leaburn - Signs New 3 Year Contract (p77)

Surely has to be a deal where he signs an extra year on a much improved salary hence benefitting him financially immediately, removing the risk to him of getting injured whilst winding his contract down (which must be on his mind) and giving us the chance to keep him to the summer and sell him for good money then whilst keeping it short he knows he realistically holds the cards.
Obvs would hope for a longer deal but the above seems realistic to me, maybe even a +1 year at the end in our favour but only if we are promoted to the Championship and with a further wage boost or something..0 -

As fans we'd likely always want to keep the player, but the club (and Jones) might feel differently if we can get a 1m and put it towards a couple of decent January signings.fenaddick said:

Call me mental too, but I think he’s a better all round player than Stansfield, he’s a year younger than him too, and look how much Birmingham paid for him. Leaburn under a decent length contract is worth millions to us and just the same with how our chances of success on the pitch improves with Miles in the team.
I think it is also a distinct possibility, like the sale of Karlan Grant... Compensation would only apply if he stayed in England, so if there's a cash offer in Jan it would be hard to turn down...
Looks like the amount would be somewhere in the region of 300k-400k Euros compensation. So from a purely financial perspective, at what point does it become better to take the money and lose him 4 months early? £750k-£1M? Maybe more if we're actually pushing for promotion?0 -

Won't that be at a massively reduced price anyway given his contract would be up in 6 months anyway. Miles could be the difference maker in us potentially making the playoffs this year so I wouldn't want to let him go unless we can get him back on loan. However much is needed to reinvest in 2-3 top quality players at this level. We’d need a striker to replace Miles and a creative midfielder at a minimum for it to feel like a fair exchange in terms of on field contribution.Chizz said:

Leaburn has done none of that yet.
It's not wild at all. Players are signed based on potential all the time. Off the top of the head, Shelvey, Jenkinson and Gomez were all signed for big money off the back of arguably less achievement or impressive performances or CVs than Leaburn has now. Theo Walcott. There are I'm sure other more extreme examples than any of those.
And, even if you are doing it based on actual CVs, I think you're grossly exaggerating Stansfield's CV Vs Leaburn anyway...
1) a few england youth caps don't necessarily mean much at all - at youth level you are probably largely picked based on the club you're playing for (i.e. prem or not). The current England U21 squad contains 1 Lg 1 player, the 3rd goalie, + Stansfield - then basically all players from Premier league clubs. There are millions of players with loads of youth England caps who achieved absolutely nothing in the game (see Osei Sankofa).
2) Stansfield managed 12 Champ goals last season in 43 appearances. He did this at the same age as Miles Leaburn is now (20). Miles Leaburn scored 12 League 1 goals in 35 appearances aged just 18, and quite frankly I would be pretty confident of him managing similar at Champ Level if he was playing there right now.

I'll give you Jenkinson but both Shelvey and Gomez had played for us in the championship and both had England youth caps. Not sure Walcott is the best example. He had a 15-16 year Premier league career and got almost 50 England caps. If Leaburn manages even half of that then he will have had a very good career.
In any case i'm not arguing that Leaburn isn't a good player, my point was in response to Sage saying he's a better player than Stansfield. One day he might be, right now he's not.1 -
Harsh on Kanu. Although over the course of a season I think Leaburn would score more every time I see Kanu play he adds something to the team usually thanks to his work rate. He was superb against Birmingham.Dazzler21 said:

How about the two easy chances he missed? I get that he works hard for the team but ultimately his job description is to score goals. Against Birmingham, he managed to miss the target from 3 yardsagim said:

Like I said I think Leaburn will score more and yes obviously he should of scored there but I feel like he gives us something none of the other forwards do with his work rate and press. With Leaburn and Godden up top last night neither run into the channels and stretch the defence. Kanu does this all the time. Kanu has been on a different trajectory to Leaburn and is having to adapt to the physical side of this league. He only scored the goals he did in the academy because of raw pace but he can't get away with that in pro football. I'd have him in the team all day along with either Godden or Leaburn because the work he has creates space for themTodds_right_hook said:

Kanu is an athlete with a great attitude and work ethic but I’ve seen minimal footballing ability in him , never feel he’s comfortable and in control of the ball , Leaburn is on another level and looks like he has much more potential4
