Miles Leaburn - Signs New 3 Year Contract (p77)

Good news, but probably also means negotiations for a new deal are continuing rather than him being close to signing.8

Buys some time and protects against the Premier League vultures circling for a cut price deal. Hopefully we can put the club in a position between now and the summer where he is more likely to see it as worth signing another deal (i.e. get promoted).Scoham said:Good news, but probably also means negotiations for a new deal are continuing rather than him being close to signing.4 -
Doesn't show much faith in him to only exercise the 1 year extension AFTER he's fully returned from injury. The time when he was injured was the time to negotiate a new longer deal.2
-
Miles has made 52 first team appearances, I would say that in his original contract, the club had the option for an extension after 50 games. This was triggered in the last week and the club have taken up the option for the extension.killerandflash said:Doesn't show much faith in him to only exercise the 1 year extension AFTER he's fully returned from injury. Not only have they been in negotiations with Miles for a long time, they've have spent a huge amount on making sure that Miles returns from injury as healthily as possible, sacrificing bringing him back into the team earlier to stop any recurrence and set him up for a longer career, despite the fact the majority of that will most likely away from the club. Hardly a lack of faithkillerandflash said:Doesn't show much faith in him to only exercise the 1 year extension AFTER he's fully returned from injury. Just saying I called this the other day2

Possibly says Charlton are hoping he impresses and we can flog him.killerandflash said:Doesn't show much faith in him to only exercise the 1 year extension AFTER he's fully returned from injury. The time when he was injured was the time to negotiate a new longer deal.0 -
Depends what the contract clause to extend was. How much we did for Miles to spend the summer at St George's Park showed a lot of faith. We're a league one side and could easily have had him stay at Sparrows Lane the entire time.killerandflash said:Doesn't show much faith in him to only exercise the 1 year extension AFTER he's fully returned from injury. We also have no idea if we were negotiating a longer deal while he was injured and the two sides still haven't come to an agreement.3 -
No quote from Miles in the article says it all
good news but he’ll be sold at latest in the summer2 -

Always a hidden agenda. Clause in his contract, that both parties agreed to. Clause triggered, contract extended.
Its as simple as that21 -
Does there need to be a quote from Miles at this stage?allez les addicks said:No quote from Miles in the article says it all

His demeanour when giving his interview after he scored 2 goals on Tuesday said it all.ForeverAddickted said:

Yes that was a big commitment by the club in the summer, but the perfect time to get his contract sorted was in the early phase of his injury, which would have been a real show of confidence in a player feeling down. By the time the summer came, it was clear he was well on his way to recovery. I bet his current salary is very low as well.Garrymanilow said:

None of our other recent contracts have had such a "x games clause". They've been purely "x years with a 1 year extension at the discretion of the club".guinnessaddick said:

You not read the article clearly …killerandflash said:Doesn't show much faith in him to only exercise the 1 year extension AFTER he's fully returned from injury. The time when he was injured was the time to negotiate a new longer deal.1 -
Why are people overanalysing it? Working on a longer contract which may or may not happen but if there’s a contract extension we can use in the mean time, then of course the club are going to utilise that on their best asset?
Excellent news.16 -
Can't wait to see who Andy Scott will replace him with in the summer4
-
No need on Miles's part to rush and agree to a new contract, can see why he is holding out, but we were always gonna trigger the extension in the meantime, and get the new contract sorted before the season ends...
Sure Miles is happy here, and would love to stay, just get the small print sorted properly this time Charlton, and make it realistic...2 -
Good news:
For those of us who are oldish and have been paying attention for the last 50 years of course it's catch 22 in the sense that if Leaburn can play at a more consistent level he will move on(if the price is right)
The quality of crosses that Small produced against Chelsea U21'S and the excellent corner from Terry Taylor(naive defending!) Miles will improve at least with his goal scoring if not spending too much time out wide ! Seems patently obvious to me that forwards are normally only as good as their service(blindspot for many fans/critics) and being a very tall lad Leaburn will at times look awkward.
Personally think Thierry Small has the higher ceiling as a wing back at 20 years old than Miles does as a central striker also 20 because you are normally judged on your goal return (Dad Carl was a foil for many strikers in the way that Sutton was for Shearer at Blackburn) in the modern era.
Miles Leaburn (injuries permitting) will have at least a good Championship career but by 24 could well develop into a Premiership player.

Except the club have been in negotiations about the contract for ages and would have had it signed long before he was back from injury if they had the choice. Can't just make him sign.killerandflash said:

Sorry I don’t understand? A previous poster said that if he plays 50 times, another year gets triggered.paulsturgess said:

what has 2.5 years ago got to do with anything?0 -
Absolutely! I'm sure he is delighted to stay here and play in huge games like the recent Wrexham one and has no interest in quadrupling what we can pay him by going off to the PL and trying his luck there.eastterrace6168 said:No need on Miles's part to rush and agree to a new contract, can see why he is holding out, but we were always gonna trigger the extension in the meantime, and get the new contract sorted before the season ends...

Sorry but I'm fully in the "no wonder he looked pissed off on Tuesday night" club as he had probably had just heard we had extended his contract.1 -
Ahadme is on a 4 year deal I believe so great forward thinking by Andy Scott.BigRedEvil said:Can't wait to see who Andy Scott will replace him with in the summer

Would be very surprised if he is pissed off, he has just had a huge injury - which CAFC have fully supported him through including additional cost of sending him to St George's Park all summer. He has a family with a strong Charlton connection. He isn't stupid, at no point would he be sitting there thinking CAFC wouldn't trigger the extension - clubs don't let their prize assets leave on a free if they have a contract extension option.Fortune 82nd Minute said:

Whether or not he signs a new longer term deal remains to be seen, but CAFC - quite rightly - ensuring that we at least get a decent fee for him in the summer if he wants to go.
My personal take is we probably cash in before next season, even with only a year on his contract if he can stay fit and score a few goals would expect us to get a million or 2 for him.7 -

At least I would hope, even with only a year on his contract that’s not a lot with the money being thrown around in football.Covered_End_Lad said:

With the range of attributes he has there will be plenty of interest and that’ll help drive up the asking price.0
