POST-MATCH THREAD: Charlton Athletic v Rotherham Utd: Saturday 7th September 2024 | KO 15:00

Rotherham arrived at the Valley (late!) in poor away form after a long string of losses, with Charlton looking desperate to put their disappointing performance against Reading in the rear-view mirror. It was Charlton that started better, controlling the first half but for a five minute spell that saw Rotherham grow in possession and threaten Will Manion’s goal a couple of times. But it was Charlton’s Gas Ahadme who had the first real opportunity when the ball fell to him in the box, only for him to blaze wide from four yards. He worked himself into a great position and, even though he was under pressure from a lounging challenge, he should have done better to test former Addick Dillon Phillips.

The second half saw more of the same plodding back and forth, with Charlton dominating without much real threat. When Rotherham were on the ball they rarely looked dangerous and how good form at the back meant we were again hard to break down. But Rotherham did find an opening on 58 mins with a long-range rocket whistled past three charging Charlton defenders, through the box, and past the diving Mannion and into the back of the net. Two thirty yard screamers in back-to-back matches are suggestive of a worrying pattern. Changes were made, with newcomer Alan Campbell making his debut, alongside Tyreece Campbell, and Chuks Aneke. The three made an immediate impact. TC was threatening the already tired Rotherham legs with his pace and trickery. Alan Campbell put himself about and pushed the Addicks forward. And Chuks, as he does, made his presence felt immediately. It was Alan Campbell and Chuks Aneke that combined to find the leveler on 72 mins, with Chuks curling one past Phillips and into the top corner from eighteen yards out. That gave us a sense of momentum that maybe the winner was there for us in the next 20 mins.

With the score even, the two sides went back and forth a bit but there was no breakthrough either way. Charlton will be happy with a point, as a second consecutive loss would have been difficult to digest. The performance, on the whole, was okay. Had Ahadme scored his chance, Rotherham would likely have found it difficult to stave off capitulation. But we aren’t ruthless in attack, yet. We still look mostly solid in defence and somewhat pedestrian going forward. We’re clearly a piece (or two) off of where we need to be to be the crème-de-la-creme.

    Can’t fault the effort but will need to figure out some quality in the final third, we really didn’t create anything. Two great goals in a dull game. Ramsey was excellent, Small had a poor game. Two very late goals in the opening two games making our position better than we look in my opinion. Lots to do.

    Crap formation with a boring midfield who can’t run forwards with the ball who create nothing. A striker who can head the ball but can’t kick it and can hardly stand on 2 feet. 

    After all the boring draws last season the manager wants more of the same this season 😴

    Was expecting an ugly game but was somehow even less entertained than I’d imagined. Terrible performance overall saved by a bit of magic from Chuks. It’s been said 1000 times but our attack will cost us a lot of points if we don’t sort it out soon. 

    The positive is that we 100% would have got bullied out of this game last season and lost comfortably but improvements needed.

    The conceding goals isn't really the issue. 

    We just aren't creating/finishing well enough. Unless the opponents gift us a goal we look clueless going forward.

    We created our own downfall with that latest "worldie", just like Reading last week, we just backed off and backed off, no-one had the balls and guts to put their body on the line and actually defend the guy, just opened the door and said help yourself...

    Credit to our subs today, who temporarily changed the pattern of the game. Ultimately though, we don't look like we're good enough  and have just swapped our defesive issues for attacking ones. Can't wait for Leaburn to be match fit again, but it's probably unfair and likely to be disappointing, expecting one man to make the necessary difference.

    At this early stage, it’s hard to say just how good Rotherham will prove to be. You would expect them to be up there this season, and the way they were playing out the last ten suggested they view an away point at us as a good result.

    A point was very important after last week but it was all a bit meh. We didnt play well, and the lack of firepower is a massive worry.

    Leaburn and Edwards go straight into that team IMO. And they could be the difference between a mid table finish and pushing for the playoffs.

    Next week will be a big test for me - how do we go to an away game we SHOULD win and get the job done with minimal fuss?

    Also - Chuks. Brilliant with his feet. Shocking with his head in front of goal again.

    Ahadme? Did a few bits ok but I am veering more and more towards guff every single week

    Was saying this at the game. We just gave him the freedom of the pitch to take the shot. I get that we prioritise guarding our box but this has happened 3 times now.

    Shouldn’t allow a worldy goal to blind us to the fact that we created virtually nothing in a dreadful game.  Nice to see the defence more solid than in previous years but with this style of football it’s going to be a long hard watch. I just hope there is a plan B because attritional hoofball isn’t going to do it for us over a full season. 10 points from 5 games is a good start but I can’t see how playing like this will get us in the mix. Better teams than Rotherham will find us out.

    It may well prove effective by the end of the season but Jonesball is pretty awful to watch. Little attempt to get it down and play football.

    Still not fluid enough but 7 points off Wigan, Bolton and Rotherham is a great return. The Reading game was a disappointment but I'd rather we were getting results while still needing to gel than letting the teams who should be near the top take too many points off us while we settle. In the end exactly what always happens happened; we didn't manage to beat a Steve Evans team and Chuks scored against one. The important thing is that we bounced back from a loss with a point against a tough side, Curbs will be satisfied.
    Ahadme is obviously the lightning rod for criticism but Docherty is the one I'm a little bit worried about. Berry and Coventry obviously know what they're doing but Docherty looks a bit lost in this midfield and for a player I was expecting to be a 7 out of 10 every game he's not taking enough care of the ball and I can't honestly say what he does well yet. Lots and lots of time yet for him to get there but wouldn't be the worst thing to see ACampbell in for him next game, show that no-one is safe

    I'm not convinced theirs was a worldie tbh. No doubting it was a very good strike, but we gave him loads of space to do it. The thing about this defending game is that you have to do it for the full 90+ minutes. You're only as strong as your weakest moment.

    I think Evans is trying to suggest that the Rotherham "penalty" should also have been a red card

    Dont eat too many burgers kids, the food destroys your brain it seems

    Steve Evans described the game as "keenly-contested" between two sides that "hopefully" will be in the promotion mix.

    I'll come away from here remembering the Neil Warnock quote: "You don't get penalties in London unless you're from London".

    Evans doesn't see it as a good point.

    Mentioned something about #cafc's injury-time goals meant it was billed as a top of the table clash "down here".

    Think he said he didn't see it like that but need to hear it back.

    Only injury-time goal this season for the Addicks was Luke Berry v Orient.

    Would have probably lost that last season. Draw fair result. I felt once we scored we played like we were happy with a draw. All in all ok. Need Leaburn back up front. Ramsey gets better every game. Great finish by Chuks. I felt him and Campbell linked up okay. Need to win at Shrewsbury next week.

    The game played out how I expected it to. Boring game between two well drilled but ordinary teams, lit up by 2 moments of quality.

    The subs improved us, with TC causing their defence more problems, Chuks scoring a worldie and AC being very busy. I do worry about our lack of any plan B, our subs are very much like for like changes, with the same formation.

    And our bench looked unbalanced too. Once we made the 3 subs, all we then had was 3 defenders.

    I can see why Jones spent so much time trying him at RCB in pre-season. He's not the most dynamic going forward but his recovery pace and ability to time the tackle is astonishing. Mitchell is obviously too good a defender to lose his spot there but I wouldn't be all that shocked if we move Tennai on at the end of the season or even in January and bring in a very attacking RWB to play outside of Ramsay at times. I reckon Jones would love to use Ramsay like England have used Kyle Walker

    Getting caught walking the ball out of defence is shocking.I was in the west stand and Nathan Jones was absolutely going into one. Our midfield was pushing up expecting the ball to be moved forward, when we lost it we had no defensive shape or cover, their wasn't the players back to close the shot down, bloody great strike though. As for us, our midfield three provided very little, the passing was as poor as last week. Small is not an outlet now, yet last season he was our biggest threat. Biggest plus was the subs, they all made the difference.

    Made to look and feel like the away team. All back to defend every corner and set piece is inviting pressure as the ball invariably comes back in again. The vim of the first few weeks is missing until TC came on to inject some pace and stretch the play. Didn't enjoy Godden and especially with Ahadme. Couple of duff ones methinks. Docherty wasn't receiving or feeding either as too often square to the play.

    Rotherham looked like they will get better over time. They have invested in their squad and should improve. Odafin and Clarke-Harris their standouts for me. Possibly a good time to have played them!

    I have a feeling its more because they have no faith in whats considered handball now, so dont want to risk giving away a penalty or free-kick

    Positives.......

    We came from a goal down to get a point
    We are averaging 2 points a game
    Defence looks solid.

    Negatives......

    Only 1 shot on target. 
    Tactic seems to be to launch it upfield to target man. 
    No creativity.

    As someone above has said, next week at Shrewsbury will be the acid test. A team looking to be top 6 need to be going there and winning. And not by a scruffy 89 min scramble but by 2 or 3. At least rest their keeper.....sting his palms.

    I reckon I watched about a third of that game. We are so dull to watch that it's almost painful at times. 

    Midfielders are all too similar, we've not found a front two that have clicked as a pair and there is not enough threat from the wing backs.

    Ramsey was good, but most of his impressive play was in our half. I've no idea what has happened to Thierry Small, but I am hoping Edwards won't be out for much longer.

    Another clanger from Lloyd Jones and Gillesphey back to looking shaky again.

    T Campbell and Chuks both influenced the game, but you know neither will have an impact like that if they start. Anyone else see Chuks slumped over on his haunches at the end? Injured or just knackered?

    That is 3 worldies we have conceded now. All 3 were poorly defended with half hearted attempts to stop the player getting a shot away.

    Can't not mention set plays. Absolutely abysmal again.
