would be wasting precious time going back in after an over though...Callumcafc said:Bairstow would be due to face the first over after lunch.Maybe we give him six balls and say go and get your fifty… would annoy the Aussies having to field for one over as well. :-)0 -
Yes I suppose it’s three overs taken out of the game and declaring over lunch would be the obvious move.kentaddick said:

Who knows? I thought England might’ve been aiming for a mid morning dec so they’ve surprised me.0 -
Declare at 1:29pm2
-
If they do that send Anderson out so he can walk off for the last time :-)Callumcafc said:Bairstow would be due to face the first over after lunch.Maybe we give him six balls and say go and get your fifty… would annoy the Aussies having to field for one over as well. :-)0 -
I think we'll go back out as Bairstow's looking in good touch. Try to get the lead up to 220-2302
-
I'd declare now and ask Australia if we can have their ball...2

England haven't looked troubled. Why will we skittle the Aussies?ProperCharlton said:Declare at lunch. Take as many wickets as we can before close of play, then finish the job when the rain allows.
my view is get as many as possible to create score board pressure.
loving this thread. Everyone has a view without being rude and crossing the line 👏🏻3 -
Give bairstow 20 mins. Create pressure. With broad and Anderson to come, there is a strong possibility we will be all out in 20 mins anyway1
-
Normally I'd want a quick 30, 40 more, but given we're at such a risk of running out of time I agree.kentaddick said:think we've now got enough runs in the tank to declare.0 -
they just have to try and decide what is gonna end up being more beneficial in the end - 30 extra runs on the board or 30 extra minutes bowling at them.
Personally would take the extra time - confident we can bat as fast as we need to if chasing a total down1 -

Apparently covers have gone on the pitch in the last five mins or so0
-
It’s raining now, so may be a delay to restart. I say 20-30 more runs, bairstow and Broard wack it a bit and declare by 2.15 so they’ve got no chance to rest before coming out to bat. Should never declare at lunch. Changes mindset. Keep em guessing and replanning all the ifs and buts.0
-
if you bat till 2, then you'll have them in for 2.10, which should be plenty of time0
-
It’s gonna rain around 2ish I believe, not sure how bad as it’s passing round/over all the time. Hopefully not enough to delay a start or take them off.Mainly because we’re midway up that bloody party stand and there are a lot of stairs.1
-
Psychologically 200 plus to make us bat again is a factor too.2
-
Meanwhile. What a shirt.0

What's the play here then? Are we just gonna bat it out?0
-
Three balls bowled and then off for rain0
-
Surely time to declare...0

This is where cricket doesn't help itself. This shower has been on the radar all day due to come just after lunch. Australia 8 overs short in the session but the rain hadn't arrived yet. Stay out there and say we'll take lunch when the rain comes or when you've completed the overs. That would make them get a move on.4

rain, rain go away...0

Who sabotaged the hover cover then? 👀1

This, 122 runs in the session at 5 an over. Its easy to say (and I'm guilty of it overnight) lets go at 10 an over and smash 150 in 15 overs but in reality its not like a T20, there are no fielding restrictions, conditions suit the bowlers much more today, the bowlers are fresher after a nights rest, and they are a world class bowling attack. I'd say a decent morning overall.kentaddick said:scoring almost 5 runs an over in a test match and you want us to get a move on?
I get we want a 200 -220 lead but I would have declared at lunch. Great time to bowl and you lose 2 overs for the change of innings.0 -
inverse the edgbaston declaration and this one and we might be 2-1 up in the series, looking like we're odds on for 4-1.0
-
Let’s bowl , give ourselves a chance to win the poxy test , yes maybe at the expense of a loss but it’s all about the best chance of getting a win , it’s a match against the weather , not a 5 day is Bazball good or not contest … adapt to the conditions we’re in , the new ball is moving , let’s get at em
he who dares Rodney1 -
Declare too early in the first test, declare too late in this one. There’s a certain symmetry there2
