    Phillies win in Houston to become the 12th and final team to make the post season.

    With the Mariners and the Phillies both making the playoffs, the longest playoff drought is now shared between the Angels and the Tigers who each last participated in the playoffs in 2014.

    The fact the Angels feature in this stat whilst having Mike Trout and Ohtani on their roster is an example of the total cock up in approach of their management

    As well as the total lack of ambition from Trout when he signed on again with them! He could have gone to a contender and got paid well but stayed there!

    It’s a good point. Without the change in format, the Mariners would’ve managed to break their own streak (all the way back to 2001) by claiming the #5 seed.

    Meanwhile the Phillies sneak in as a #6 seed. Without the format change, they would’ve held the longest drought record with the last time they reached the playoffs being in 2011.



    (The Marlins would now hold the unwanted record if you discounted the COVID-shortened, playoff expanded season. 2020 aside, they’ve not been involved in the post-season since they won the World Series in 2003.)

    This is to try and stop tanking and penalising non investment by owners. 

    With the revenue sharing scheme, there is less incentive to invest and get a good product to earn more revenue as you are getting income from the collective pool. 

    Now if you are a net receiver of income from the revenue pool you will only get two years of being in with a shot at getting the high picks.

    Switched off looking at the thread for the past couple of months as I've been watching recordings of all the Cardinals games and wanted to avoid spoilers.
    What an unbelievable end to the career of the great Albert Pujols - a new man since the All Star Game but more accurately, the sensational return of the old and original Albert. Total superstar. 
    Too incredible to think that his final season and that of Yadi and (probably) Waino can be capped off with another Ring (Goldie and Arenado need to get firing on all cylinders again to even have a sniff, as the Braves and Dodgers will take some beating) but the journey starts tonight.
    No doubt, another whacky October awaits.

    Guardians win game 1 of their wildcard series against the Rays.

    Phillies and Cardinals currently scoreless in the top of the seventh inning.

    Mariners and Blue Jays about to start.

    Padres and Mets later this evening.

    Amazing comeback by the Phillies, they score 6 in the top of the 9th to beat the Cardinals 6-3. Cards now have to win in Philly tomorrow to avoid elimination.

    My mistake, you are right. I thought the venue's alternated, but the higher seeded team has home advantage for all 3 games if necessary.

    Cleveland win in the bottom of the 15th inning with a home run - crowd goes wild. They win the series 2-0 and will move on to the divisional against the Yankees.

    Drama in Toronto. Blue Jays are out if they lose today, they led 8-1 and it’s now level 9-9 in the 8th inning.

    Mariners win 10-9 and advance to the divisional round against the Astros.

    At least I have Charlton to look forward to over the winter.....

    Crunch time for the cards as they need to replace  Albert, Yadi and Waino. A lot of good young players in place already but is it enough.

    Winning the NL Central is one thing, advancing in the post-season another.
