I’m not writing off our season either but we’re now relying on free agents and u21s filling the gaps. It’s not impossible but it’s not common either. Naming 2 free agents signed 10 years apart kind of proves that point.Rothko said:
Yep, and CBT was another, I remember when he signed on here, and it was meltdown like.Scoham said:
He did but we’ve signed a lot more who haven’t worked out. He was a bit of a one off, you won’t often find a player of his quality on a free in September.Rothko said:Didn’t Yann sign as a free agent?
I can’t remember a free agent signing outside the window since then who made anywhere near the impact he did.Anyway, we’ll see what happens, I’m with the likes of Valley Gary and Clem on this, decent team, good manager, who knows, I haven’t written the season off emotionally or to look like a football genius, off the back of tonight.
We’ll see, I’m optimistic about the likes of Leaburn, Henry, Ness and Chin, but there’s a big step between doing a job to help the team finish mid table and really stepping up to be part of a promotion push.

Clare in a 4 is massively different to his performance in a 3. But yeah we’d have Deji and Terrell Thomas could be an ootionClem_Snide said:Re: Centre Back - assume that we can recall Elewere if we are in a hole and I seem to recall Clare doing pretty well there last season. Perhaps this thread is such a rip roaring entertainment fest they will drag out freebie searching and speculation for another 3-4 weeks to keep us and them going…? In all seriousness I hope they find defensive cover now and invest proper time in lining up another forward for January. Craig McG staying for now will help when the WC comes around, but Harness looked ok last night too.0

same with deji because we are light af at cbvalleynick66 said:On balance better that we didn’t sign players who are no better than we already have just for the sake of it.We can only hope that Leaburn and Kanu take comfort from it and come knocking loudly at Garners door to get their chances. That’s the positive.More likely we have to hope (because that’s all we gave) injuries are not our undoing.0 -
I don't think it's outrageous to expect us to have two senior players for every position. I don't think that's asking too much. I can live without a striker (eurgh) but we have 3 senior CBs for 2 CB positions, that's really not good enough.
And that's without even mentioning the fact that one of them is Ryan Inniss.7 -
To be fair we've turned over a lot of last season's dross, we've recruited, and kept the nucleus of a good squad, but it's the injuries we will pick up that's going to be our undoing. We only needes 2 more bodies in. That's what smarts for me. If we go out and get them 2 in January, that will just annoy me. Why wait till then?4
-
Poor Steven Gallen, Thomas gets to do the video about who we are going to sign the he has to do the one about who we didn't.37
-
The club update states 7 in but how many went out…?Purrington, Souare, Pearce, Gunter, Watson, Washington, Burstow, Matthews, the two on loan (from Spurs and Chelsea), Leko, Lee, Gilbey, Famewo, Henderson…?
I’m not including AMB or Davison as they weren’t around the squad last season. So that’s 7 in, plus Kirk but 15 out…!? Is my maths correct? Now don’t get me wrong, Washington aside, I wouldn’t have kept any of the above, but it shows we’re woefully short…8 -

I wonder what Scott, Curbs and Brownie will say on Saturday, considering their previous calls for an extra defender and striker. How diplomatic will they be...2

But until it happens a lot can change - No wonder less and less people on here are sharing information they're aware of, if they're gonna get stick when it doesnt happen
Hmmm.
Might be worth checking what Martin actually told several Lifers at last night's game.
Sounded to me as though he was 100% certain of his facts on the transfer front.
Now IF he was a bona fide employee at our club, he might have found that his salary had suddenly become "too rich" in the current economic climate ( at CAFC )
Martin is a twat for thinking he was 100% certain, but until its on the O/S anyone is an idiot for believing that.
It should always be appreciated if a Lifer passes on the information they've heard, but again it should never be taken as gospel and those who pass the information on should never be moaned at until its on the OS
According to you, there appears to be a number of idiots on the site that you monitor....
None of us was born yesterday , you know....
I'd charge you with reading back over every post in this lengthy & ultimately disappointing thread and tell me whether there are more Lifers questioning the merits & backing of our owner at this crucial time of the new season, than there are those confident that he has it all in hand.
I'm not saying that some comments about the lack of incoming are a touch OTT but I'm sure you might agree that the football supporter is an emotional being and the wellbeing of his/her/it's football club is very high on their list of priorities. This is why we spend our hard earned on tickets, travel, even hospitality in some cases and all we ask is honesty & a degree of success year on year in return. Emotions are bound to run high tonight based on the hopes we had just 24 hours ago following conversations with the owner's son... who is an adult with a "decent" CV , we are led to believe, and not a young man in his first job.
It would be an almost impossible task to forget those positive, exciting words uttered by out "Great Dane" when he first arrived in SE7 & although time getting to know him has somewhat dampened our hopes ( and dreams) , there will always be huge disappointment when things appear to be on a knife edge - even on a downward trajectory. With just ONE senior striker in the matchday squad , a highly promising Young Gun who those ITK state must not be overplayed plus an injury prone player whose ability to play a full game even when fit is doubtful, I suggest respectfully that you surely cannot be happy with that state of affairs. Ben Garner will need to be a magician of the highest order if he is to have any chance of conjuring enough goals from this line up to get us in the top 6 come May. I wish him well, of course & hope that somehow he will succeed.
Disappointed, concerned, angry plus the feeling of being misled - those are inevitably some of the emotions felt as the window slams shut with some expressing these feelings better than others. The old chestnut regarding "doing the transfer business " early has come back to haunt us again even though it appeared that lessons had been learned.
If it wasn't clear that TS is anxious to cut costs in any way possible, then the redundancy of Olly Groome should have made even the most sceptical of fans think again. The price of matchday tickets when announced, in itself, should have been a warning of his modus operandi but his lack of experience in the Beautiful Game plus his determination to do it his way should have been a distinct warning ...but some are determined not to question anything, it seems.
So, yes, I can fully understand why some of our Lifers might come across as less than level headed tonight.
It's called being an Addick - and wanting the best for our football club.

You'd have thought free agent CBs would be easier to find that goalscoring strikers. Failing that, I hope Jason Pearce is keeping fit...
As an aside, when he was released as a player (alongside Famewo going back), I'm sure the intention would have been the bring in TWO additional CBs, otherwise we might just have given Pearce another year as 4th choice.5 -
So much for "lessons have been learnt from last summer" Leaving it until the last few hours of a THREE month window to bring in some quality in two positions suggest that the lessons were not learnt.Callumcafc said:Not sure what else there is to say. At least under Roland we got Josh Parker.
To get absolutely no-one in in two key areas that desperately needed it is bordering on criminal.5 -
My last word before going to bed.
Good start to a season totally wasted by not adding just another couple of players.
Now watch Stockley or O'Connell get injured on Saturday, leaving us short of players where it's most needed.
And yes, I will laugh when this happens because we have all seen the writing on the wall but the club have done nothing to plug the gaps. You just can't help some people & Sandgaard will see on a weekly basis his "investment" reduce in value as our quest for promotion hits the buffers once again. He ain't getting out with a profit, just like RD. So he cuts costs to the extent that you wonder if he actually has a brain, let alone a business one.
Really seriously thinking about not going much more. Total waste of money.. I have a ST for this season but it may well be my last. Not just footballing reasons but all will become clearer in time.
Over & out.8 -
Agreed we've got a lot of great young prospects it could the making of them. Not ideal for a promotion push but not the end of the world either.valleynick66 said:On balance better that we didn’t sign players who are no better than we already have just for the sake of it.We can only hope that Leaburn and Kanu take comfort from it and come knocking loudly at Garners door to get their chances. That’s the positive.More likely we have to hope (because that’s all we gave) injuries are not our undoing.
I'm as gutted as everyone it's clear a striker was needed and the club didn't get one. Maybe football fans in general get too hung up on the transfer market when we've got a great crop of youngsters coming through. Could be like the mid 90's again when Rufus, Newton etc all broke through into the team.1 -
I refuse to believe that Garner is happy with Stockley, Aneke and Leaburn as his only strikers. Hell, I refuse to believe he would happy if Bonne was the name added to that contingent.
That's not a strike-force worthy of promotion unfortunately11 -
Gallen not blameless in all this though. I know a lot of fans view him largely immune from criticism cos he worked wonders on an extremely tight budget under Roland - but the recruitment has got so lazy over recent times. No other club brings back the amount of ex players we do.Cafc43v3r said:Poor Steven Gallen, Thomas gets to do the video about who we are going to sign the he has to do the one about who we didn't.6 -

I'm bored of being torn a strip off because we failed to do what any club of our size and stature that released SEVENTEEN players and signed SEVEN should do and bring in a CF and CH that EVERYBODY thinks we need, EVEN INCLUDING THE OWNER!
I give up
It simply won't happen this season despite Leaburn, Henry, Claydon, Kanu etc
I wish everybody the best that thinks otherwise but it won't6 -
Steve Gallen's voice is trying very hard to find the positives, but his face is not following suit.

Really really disappointing !!! surely we should have given a time deadline to the club that allowed us to move on with backups ready to go if they didnt give us an answer by then
To let it go to the wire with only one player in the hope there club ok it is a joke and shows a lack of leadership/experience and knowledge on the recruitment front
we was so close to a great window now i think this is gna leave us very short at times but time will tell i suppose
just so annoying !1 -
And in the previous window came from the infamous ‘black box’ largely - Dobson and Clare come to mind.IR94 said:

A lot of the blame will get pointed at Sandgaard because that's the way the world works now.
But genuinely what does Gallen do in this structure? The last few years either his scouting network has gone or they've just run out of players.7
