Calling all punk fans: Favourite punk singles?

edited January 2022 in Not Sports Related
Over these last couple of years of covid misery I’ve taken to blogging, mainly the Jimmy Seed/Minnie Seed stuff, but also one about buying records.
The first post covered 1969-1974 when I was still at school. I bought my earliest records in Medhursts in Bromley where David Bowie bought his (much cooler) records some years earlier, when he was still at school. That list includes prog through to Roxy and Kraftwerk.
The second (much shorter) post covered my college years when I couldn’t afford to buy many albums. Lots of Bowie and Velvet Underground.
The third post covers buying dub reggae albums between 1977 and 1980.
There are a couple of Spotify playlists that mean you can hear tracks from most of the featured albums.

The next post will be about buying punk singles between ‘77 and maybe ‘80 or ‘81, and I’ll have to go through my box and list them all (around a hundred I’d guess) but I’d really be interested to get an idea of what your favourite punk singles are?
Also, are they the same now as they were back in the day? For example my favourites were Pistols and Clash singles back then, but now they’re vying with the Ramones, early Buzzcocks and the Lurkers, for some reason 😂

  • Sex Pistols - Silly Thing
The Fall - Bingo Masters Break Out, Container Drivers, Rowche Rumble
Stranglers - Didn't buy any singles but tore the arse out of Rattus Norvegicus - loved every track
Siouxsie ATB - Arabian Knights, Spellbound
Members - Sound of the Suburbs

TBH I don't play them very much now, but love them when I do hear them.

  • God Save The Queen
    Pretty Vacant
    Hurry Up Harry
    Sounds of the Suburbs

  • My favorites
    Submission - Sex Pistols
    Pretty Vacant
    Identity - X Ray Spex
All around the World - The Jam
  • The Screeching Weasels - I wanna be a homosexual

    bit modern though..

Ever Fallen In Love - Buzzcocks
Do Anything You Wanna Do - Eddie & The Hotrods

In the City - The Jam

The band that inspired London Punks but didn’t look like Punks, were the Pink Fairies. So in tribute to them I nominate the single with the most ‘punk’ title.
    ‘Do it’.

that came from the mid 90s. for the late 70s i would say Pretty Vacant by the Sex Pistols. Mainly because of the Abba riff..

  • Into The Valley - The Skids
    Israel - Siouxie atb
    Wednesday Week - Undertones
Nobodys Hero - Stiff Little Fingers
Everybody's on Top of the Pops - The Rezillos
    Babylon's Burning - The Ruts

  • Jilted John - Jilted John
Ever Fallen In Love - Buzzcocks
Do Anything You Wanna Do - Eddie & The Hotrods
    Go Buddy Go -Stranglers
    Teenage Kicks - Undertones
I remember being very surprised and disappointed when I found out that the brilliant Jilted John and the excruciating John Shuttleworth are one and the same.
  • In no particular order :-
    Grip/London Lady - Stranglers
Do Anything You Wanna Do - Eddie & The Hot Rods
Milk & Alcohol - Dr Feelgood
Shot By Both Sides - Magazine
    Marquee Moon - Television
Neat Neat Neat/New Rose - Damned
Gary Gilmour's Eyes - The Adverts
In The City - The Jam

    and many more.....
  • So so difficult - I could pick all Stranglers singles as my top 5 - but for variety I would choose:

Penetration - Come into the Open
The Skids - Working for the Yankee Dollar
Siouxsie and the Banshees - Spellbound
    The Stranglers - 5 Minutes
    The Clash - London Calling
  • London Calling - The Clash
    Go Buddy Go - Stranglers

    plus Pistols
    Anarchy
    God Save
    Pretty Vacant

  • Holidays In The Sun - Pistols
    Smash It Up - Damned
    Public Image - PIL
Party In Paris - UK Subs

Could list nearly all Pistols songs tbf.

Long time ago. We all change - I have. John was very unassuming then and played down the success of the singles. We didn't really talk about them.
  • Anything by the Pistols or Damned but one of my favs is Holiday in Cambodia by The Dead Kennedy's
  • Another Girl, Another Planet - The Only Ones
Where's Bill Grundy Now? - TV Personalities
    Spiral Scratch - Buzzcocks
    White Riot - The Clash
    Teenage Kicks - The Undertones
In The City - The Jam
I belong to the Blank Generation - Richard Hell
Live at the Marquee - Eddie and the Hot Rods

Loads more I sold ages ago

    Noooooooooo.
    Kept a great selection though.

So many but my fav is  "The Ruts - Babylon’s Burning" - still holds up today (and I remember being down The Barrier and we would sing our own version "Morris Walks Burning" lol).
