ECB’s “The Hundred”

Do we honestly think it was a fair vote? The ECB wanted this, its guaranteed the offer made to the counties was "you can vote yes, get £1.3m now and a share of future revenues, or you can vote no and when it does eventually happen, which it will, you'll get nothing"

Plus, the county game isn't viable without ECB financial support for the majority of counties (if not all), so does any county really want to stick its head above the parapet and publicly so

And there we have it.  The BBC shows The Hundred and it gets better ratings than all other domestic cricket.  It's a win/win.  It's yet another reason why The Hundred has been successful so far and is bringing in a ROI.  Create a format that's attractive to free-to-air; sell the format to sponsors who want their brands shown on free-to-air; virtuous circle.  

But, of course, it's interesting to note that The Hundred is getting better ratings on Sky than other domestic cricket on Sky.  

Put the T20 on BBC and get the same figures? Sky are pushing the 100 as its invested in it. Not rocket science. 

And yet, despite it not being rocket science, they decided against it.  

Perhaps to get even better viewing figures? Or to stimulate more and better overseas ratings (and associated sponsorship and revenue streams)?  Or to ensure the greatest possible exposure for both men's and women's cricket?  Or to stimulate interest from more younger fans?  Or more female fans?  Or create greater equality and opportunity?  I guess if that's what was behind the plan, it's worked in every respect.  

If it was as simple as 'put the T20 on BBC and get the same figures' they'd have done that. First, it assumes that 'the BBC' would be happy to 'put it on'.  Or that the BBC would be happy to invest as much to broadcast it as they have The Hundred.  The fact they haven't shows it's not as simple as that.  And you don't need to be a rocket scientist to see that. 

You are doing overtime trying  to defend the Hundred and I admire your consistency with your opinion.

Yesterday Kent had to play without Heino Kuhn. He was injured. That in itself wouldn't be an issue if it weren't for the fact that another SEVEN of their batsmen were contracted to the Hundred. Of those seven, Alex Blake, Jordan Cox and Jack Leaning haven't played a single minute for their respective franchises and are unlikely to do so. Daniel Bell-Drummond has been dropped by his franchise too.

But the Hundred isn't de-valuing the validity of the Royal London as a comp is it?

As stated elsewhere......I'm not really that much into cricket.

I have been to some test matches and was bored beyond belief.
I have been to some one day matches - some were boring...some were ok.
I have been to quite a few T20 matches and have enjoyed them all.
I have not been to any of the Hundred matches - but have watched and enjoyed quite a few on the TV.

The 2 1/2 to 3hr match window is perfect for my attention span and is much more accessible to many of the more casual viewer.

I think that T20 / The Hundred is so different to Test cricket that any 'new' fans are unlikely to be transferable into the Test version. There may be some new fan cross over into the one day stuff....but that's as far as it goes I reckon.

Having said that.....purely from a viewing perspective - I don't really see the need for T20 and The Hundred.

That might undermine the Blast which the ECB don't want to do - yet anyway. Meanwhile, the Royal London Final has been moved from a Saturday at Lords to a Thursday at Trent Bridge. But then it is a competition for 2nd XI players now as a result of when it is being played.

This is a really good post. I'm glad you have found some cricket that you enjoy, even though my preference is for the format you like least. 

I don't think The Hundred would ever convert someone like you to becoming a Test match regular, and that's absolutely fine, because it's not intended to. But I wonder if it will help win over fans to all formats whose very first exposure to cricket is The Hundred. I hope so.

I do see that it is detrimental to the County game, but I am enjoying watching the matches none the less.

I am not a fan of tagged on adjectives.  Especially with a name like 'Birmingham ' Bears instead of Warwickshire .

Spot on. I for one love the traditional English names we see in T20, like the Worcestershire Rapids, Essex Eagles and Lancashire Lightning.
