Porto for the Nations League, there was a handful acting up but the media would have people believe it was the whole fanbase. It’s massive for me, and I literally plan my Summers around major tournaments.
There’s something quite special about the fact that they only come around every 2-4 years, as well as the fact that near enough all family members, friends, neighbours etc are invested in the same team.
What I also love about major tournaments is the fact that they cannot be bought - in the way the Premier League or domestic football can. There’s something a bit more pure about it (FIFA politics aside).
Footballers can win as many FA Cups, Premier Leagues etc as they want - but nothing will give them the status that comes with winning a tournament for their country (World Cup in particular). It is the absolute holy grail.
And of course, England’s performance is what amplifies the emotion so much more. I can tell you where I was, who I was with, what was happening in that period of my life for all of the major tournaments.
Charlton is the biggest hobby in life that I have, but England/summer tournaments seem to unlock a completely different set of emotions and excitement.I just want to be able to experience that moment once in my life of what it would be like to see England win it. The celebration would be the biggest thing this country has seen in decades.How can the thought of that alone not get you caring about it?13 -

Each to thier own, my emotions for England and Charlton are equal and always have been.
When I hear a football fan saying they 'couldn't care less about England' I can't help but wince in the way I do when the twat at a BBQ says proudly 'football, Is that the one with the round ball? like they are some intellectual comic genius.
It doesn't make me right, but I wince all the same. I am 53 and still believe we are going to win it, every time without fail, this year is no different.
Anyway, the day we do win it I am sure the 'Masked singer' or something similar will be on so crack on.11 -

Following England is no difference to any league club with the type of support is attracts. Whenever England play far away and it’s an expensive trip, there is never any trouble and everyone is respectful to the hosts. When England have a ‘Ryanair’ match then trouble will follow. No difference to supporting Charlton when north east matches are less aggro compared to when we play in London.3

The more they earn, the less I care. I don't have sky and its now been 2 seasons since I've watched MOTD. Now days my love is charlton, not football in general. As a kid I was obsessed, but have just lost interest the last few years.ValleyGary said:

I love a Euro/World Cup. I can't really compare it to going to Charlton - I've only seen England in the flesh once as a boy - but when watching on TV it's not often that all your mates and the rest of the pub support the same team.
