Any fucker that hates England Will always be supported by a prick like you.
And not ashamed to show it
I love my country and always support England in sporting events.
I am not celebrating someones death just because he cheated in a game against us1 -

Really wish I was in the pub with you lot so we could have a proper discussion over a few pints. However,my personal last word on the subject, people are saying he was a cheat, well I have not heard of any other instances which confirm this.He was a great footballer, who in a split second, realised he could not score legally, and was I am sure as surprised as anyone when the goal was given. That does not make him a serial cheat .Are we saying he should have owned up and told the ref to not give it,in your dreams.Have a look at some of the videos of the treatment he was given over the years which often went unpunished.Gentile of Italy tried to kill him,a guy from Bilbao broke his ankle,Cameroon players were guilty of blatant GBH
On the subject of should he have owned up,Should the German keeper have told the ref Lampards shot was 2 foot over the Line, should Atherton have walked when blatantly snicking a ball of Alan Donald,Chris Broad same against the Aussies.Every game you see players appealing for things which they know they are not entitled to,that is cheating, going down looking like you have been shot, that is cheating.RIP Diego one way or another you will not be forgotten.6 -

I think the '86 cheat thing was the catalyst for most of 'our' hatred towards him.
His subsequent misdemeanours (as described elsewhere in this thread) have also been layered on to this hatred. If these other misdemeanours are true (the drug abuser one certainly is) - then they should make the handball cheating incident pale into insignificance.
The guys was a footballing genius...this is obvious.
His death is obviously very sad for his friends and family - and for those that were positively affected by his life.
It is possible however to be apathetic over the death of a person that had no real impact on your life.
Am I happy that he is dead? No!
Am I particularly upset that he is dead? Again....No.

If you admire that more fool you.
Nothing to like there. Compared to Pele . You just can't.0 -
From a 44 year old memory Jimmy Giles did a very similar hand of God goal against Bolton. The Bolton players especially Jim McDonagh went bonkers. Oh how we laughed.
As for Maradona the best player of my generation of course he was flawed but what a mad life fame and talent gave him2 -

If you think he cheated just the once you are naïve. How many of those wonderful performances were fuelled on illegal substances. Remember the camera stare at one world cup? He was a thoroughly obnoxious man who surrounded himself with obnoxious people. But because he was good at football we can overlook all that. What a role model he was. But because he came from a poor background we can overlook all of that.
Wow I actually pitty you, that you can hold that much of a grudge for someone you have never met that you are actually cheering their death.
I think like quite a few, he is simply indifferent.3 -

I think Maradona will always be in the pantomime villain role as far as most England fans are concerned. The bloke comes over as though he’s always been a Marmite type character to anyone, let alone if he scored the winning goal against your nation with his hand to knock em out the World Cup.
He was undoubtedly a brilliant footballer and he certainly seemed to have lived his best life to the end. So, yeah RIP, but I’ll still reserve the right, as an Englishman and England football supporter, to dislike him as a player and a cheat

I saw a comment online that said ‘the Scottish are so in love with him because he’s curly haired, obese and take copious amounts of drugs. He must remind them of their mothers’22 -

Its not just the cheating in football. Open your eyes to the other things he did and was. If you are happy to overlook those things because he was good at football, that is fine, that is your view. I'm not glad he has lost his life, I am not cheering his death, I just don't care. That is my view, and like you I'm entitled to one4 -

That player would not be considered as a fucking hero by me and he certainly wouldn’t have been considered a national hero either that’s for sure.
As a nation, we would certainly have been embarrassed and not rejoiced anything like the Argies did.
Can you imagine what Alf Ramsey would have felt and said had a similar thing had have happened in 66.....he’d have wanted to curl up and die.5 -
Mike Bassett and Kevin “Tonka” Tonkinson got our revenge against Argentina. “Do a Maradona son”.

more a case that we haven't taken them to enhance our performance in professional sporting capacity0 -

I’ll just say that if I hadnt seen the Maradona film I probably wouldnt even have opened the thread. I really urge everyone to watch it, its one of the finest sport films I’ve seen, from the director of Senna. If you thought the bloke was just a bit of a knob, as I did, it’ll make you think a bit. And you will see the genius, not least in the clip of him on a waterlogged Napoli training pitch.

When I think of "great" sportsmen / women, I think of people who were obviously good at their chosen sport, but also competed in the spirit of the game. I also believe a good sportsman / woman conducts themselves with some sort of dignity off the pitch as well as on it.
Re' the drug taking in general. Does every person who chooses to take recreational drugs deserve to be treated as a victim? Sure, I understand there are addicts who have been preyed upon and taken advantage of, from all walks of life, from those on the street to the likes of Amy Winehouse etc. However, I also think there are plenty of people who are completely in control and binge because they can, and they love it.

Napoli's owner and the Mayor of Naples have both said they want to rename their stadium after him.
Such a shame there's no fans at games right now, as the tributes at Napoli and at Boca Juniors next home game would've been superb to see.5 -

I'm not getting in to anything around the comments / thoughts etc around his passing. But that comment does not hold up at all.4
