Totally agree, but if there is a league where you should prioritise attacking over defending, this is it. You put league one defenders under the right sort of pressure, they will concede.Oggy Red said:

But you need to make sure the back door is properly closed behind you. Or you will concede easily on the counter, as we did recently against Doncaster.

But in the New Year, Bowyer often chose to play 3 CBs at the back, no room for a conventional back 4 LB - plus Purrington's no wingback, as everybody knows. Different gameplan, formation, tactics.
Before Purrington was signed on loan, we had Lewis Page again lost to injury and no specialist LB, and it showed - no shape to the back 4 and shipping goals. Ben came in and in Bowyer's words, "steadied the ship". During the terrific run in the last 12 fixtures that promotion season, we lost only 1 game, the game that an ill Purrington missed and Solly got himself sent off.
Purrington was so bad that he reclaimed his position immediately, we finished 3rd, won the playoffs and he scored a vital Wembley equaliser. And so bad that afterwards Bowyer signed him on a permanent contract.

What have I learnt?1. Bogle's record in the championship is poor..... likely brought in get us out of League One? 1 year contract suggests so2. Ratio goals to games is better for all players that are established and play many games in an individual league, usually playing for 1 side (which makes sense as teams build around them). Bogle has not even played 1/2 seasons worth of games in League one, so we need to give him a chance to show us what he can do. Player with the best ratio for that league highlighted in yellow. 3. Bonne and Bogle have a near identical record at National league level. Is Bogle the new Bonne? The type of goals he scores (relatively spectacular and individual) suggests not.4. Despite Taylors lack of goals this season, he still has the best ratio in the championship of the 3 players.
5. Taylor was pretty consistent in Champ, League One, League two (unfortunately < 3.0 games per goal)
6. Other than a short spell in League Two, Bonne has a pretty consistent record (around 3.0 games per goal) across all the leagues he has played in, which is why he may have been worth keeping hold of.
7. All players, when looking at total games to goals, are roughly equal. This is an inconsistent stat though as the games were played at varying level so I don't pay it a lot of attention. Bonne for example, played nearly half the games counted in the National League.
Overall, I am surprised by the limited number of games Bogle has played in total ( I excluded his stint in Holland but was only a handful anyway). He needs a run of games and to stay injury free and there is every chance we could have a goal scorer equivalent to at least Bonne, but his total number of games suggest he might succumb to the Charlton curse and be injured.

Don’t get the abuse Purrington gets. He’s a steady eddy and not going to set the world on fire. Yes I can blame Him for the late Hull winner last season but forever grateful for the terrific goal at Wembley. I hope our players don’t read this forumwmcf123 said:

Just spoke to one of the guys on shift tonight who is a pompey fan. He said he liked him but he only really made substitute appearances under Kenny jacket and was primarily used as a wide man there. He felt Jacket never utilised him enough.0

For us....Not many. I'm not a stats man but I do know that the times we have got promoted (98, 2000, 2012, 2019) the top goalscorer had scored 20+. Mendonca was pipped for the Golden Boot by Phillips & Hunt won it. You don't get promoted with a striker getting 12 or 15. In this extreme hypothetical, the point is that we don't have an Ian Wright, Anelka or Thierry Henry to score goals next to him, or Pires/Ljungberg scoring many goals from midfield. Our main striker is going to have to be a pure goalscorer.
Would you back any of our non strikers other than Maddison to get more than 10?
I actually think Bogle is a decent signing on a free, I just think it now looks ridiculous people being happy that Bonne was going thinking we were going to get 2 better options, this is the reality of where we are at. Bogle would be a good compliment to a Bonne, but his past history suggests we can't be hanging our hopes on him, Aneke or Washington scoring many goals
He looks to have something about him and think he can add to our squad, but it seems like an U21 loan is going to have to be our top scorer if we are going to be successful this year with the wage cap restraints now, and that is a huge gamble
About the only player to do that over the past 20 years is......Defoe, when he went on loan to Bournemouth.

When you want to slag a player off, "dog shit" try not to be too precious yourself.
Purrington was the 6.5 player we needed at LB last time we were in League 1. In fact he was so important that when Solly was put there we struggled because unless you are two footed, Barness and Bowen from memory, it's a nightmare to play in a position where you need to tackle with your wrong foot.
Purrington started the Championship season well last season when we had the quality players like Cullen and Gallagher in midfield and Taylor up front. When we lost those players through injury and the Bastard decision by Chelsea (which was the kiss of death to our season) then Purrington along with all the players, looked like the Journey men and kids that they were.
Page would have been the LB in the championship over Purrington, just like Wiggins over Fox but injury meant that couldn't happen too often (in Lewis's case not at all)
Turner (2, 1 in his own net) Duffy, Mendonca (3, best hatrick ever in quality at the old stadium) Rufus, Purrington and Bauer. No one can deny the fantastic achievement of all of the above.
Despite the crude assessment of a LB professional footballer, he will quite rightly be in the Short list of our Wembley hero goalscorers.

Overall, I am surprised by the limited number of games Bogle has played in total ( I excluded his stint in Holland but was only a handful anyway). He needs a run of games and to stay injury free and there is every chance we could have a goal scorer equivalent to at least Bonne, but his total number of games suggest he might succumb to the Charlton curse and be injured.

Omar Bogle deserves a chance. He hasn't had a prolific season scoring goals recently
But if he can emulate Matt Tees in being a good number 9 who was brilliant in the air and the sublime Clive Mendonca who scored the best ever Hat trick at Wembley in the sheer quality of the goals, then Omar will be the 3rd striker to have come from the Grimsby stable and been successful.
Ps. Rodney Green got injured and couldn't join Matt in being a success unfortunately.
