    As everyone else is thinking, why on earth do we need 3 defensive midfielders?

    Surely you need to at least play either Mount or Grealish?

    Just don’t see the point of even having Phillips here with Rice and Dier. 

    We aren’t ever playing this system again (or at least I hope so) so why are we blooding Phillips in it

    Think Phillips is definitely one for the future. Playing premiership football will give him the opportunity to play against better players. 

    Rice -  i just don’t get.

    IIRC we played defensive midfielders against Czech Rep and lost. I’m not sure Southgates thinking behind it again, but there has to be some sort of creativity and link between the lines. Rice and Philips do not like receiving the ball on the half turn, Grealish does it every time he wants the ball.

    Id guess Southgate is putting Phillips in as a lesson to the likers of Icelandic fanny.
