Cars Owned Best / Worst!

So moving on from the First Car thread which seemed to be popular. Just wondered if anyone would like to share their ownership memories of the car that made you smile with joyful memories and the one that makes you shudder.

My favourite has to be my first Mk1 XR2. Sadly it got stolen and somebody helped themselves to the seats, wheels, body kit etc so was sold to a mate for £250 (now £20k+)
Just like this one. K&N filter and Peco exhaust.

Worst was a Fiat Brava. I bought it for my wife. It was quite new but so unreliable. The engine management unit kept going , which resulted in it just rolling to a stop, totally dead. I had it replaced at the dealership for £800 and it went twice more within six months (under warranty) so got rid.

Over to you guys and girls.

  • Bentley Continental GT (Mulsanne).
Willis Jeep (was an absolute pig).
  • favourite was my Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8

fabulous car But had to go when kids came along

never had a car I’ve regretted. Always spend a lot of time researching and get what I want

  • I'm really not a car man, but quite liked most of my cars. Has a Mazda 121 (ford fiesta with a different badge) that was quite nippy. Best car though is probably my current one - metallic green X reg Nissan Almera. Had it years and it's easy to find in car parks, and I don't care if it gets dented. Worst easily the K reg Nissan Sunny I acquired from my in-laws. About as easy to steer as a lorry, with just as much acceleration. Once day I'll own a car that isn't driven mainly by elderly people and ethnic minorities in East London, but that day isn't yet
  • Best my current car a Ford Fiesta....

    Worst Vauxhall Chevette…

Cars dont bother me, I could afford a lot of the top of the range cars, but I just use them to get me about and taking my family out.
  • Best in one way: Morris Oxford
Best in another way: VW Toureg
Worst in every way: Renault 11
  • Worst car , I can hardly type it Lada Riva a very poor mans Fiat 124.
Best car , my current BMW 120d , really quick but also very economical, win win .
  • Best - my current beloved Land Rover Defender 110 (although the 5 litre V8 Ford Mustang I had comes a close 2nd)

Worst - BMW 1 Series M Sport convertible - must have been built on a Friday afternoon - countless things went wrong on it and such a boring drive (it was a diesel)
  • Worst- Range Rover Sport 4.4 petrol supercharged. Only averaged 16mpg and had countless issues.

Best- Jaguar X type, which was 8 years old when I bought it and was reliable and good on fuel.

Notable mentioned for the audi S1 I had, very fun and very fast car, but I looked like a complete knob driving it with its loud exhaust and everyone wanted a race.

Also love our 110. They have bags of character. Ours is an 85 so is slow but it doesn't stop you smiling whilst driving.

Funny because my X-type (2005) was lousy on fuel consumption. 2litre petrol engine was lucky to get 28mpg

Hard to say which of mine were best or worse.  Hate to say that the Honda FRV served me well for 6 years & 120k miles. Worse drive was probably the Astra Merit 1.2 (around 1991-92). Best looking were the Cavalier Sportshatch or Renault Laguna.

    Worst  Austin Allegro
Best  Vauxhall Carlton Gsi 3000 or in later life the Ssang Yong Rexton
  • Worst - Jaguar XJS convertible. Bought it second hand and gave me nothing but trouble. Just beats the Austin Allegro I had in the mid-1970s.
Best - Range Rover Sport (current car). Comfortable, solid and a pleasure to drive.
  • Worst - Renault Kangoo van

Best - Joint Mercedes CLK 230 and Mercedes C220 estate (current)
  • Best was a Cayenne 4.2 v8, predominantly as the original owner added over 40k of options, from cooled seats to remote heater, was an immense car, very quick and still did high 30's MPG. Close second was a C7 RS6, just so practical let so powerful, driving down to LeMans it annoyed a fair few super cars.

Worst, has to be a Rover 216!
  • Worst - Ford Orion 1.6i Ghia. Was nice when running well but had so many issues with it. Replacement gearbox, electrical drain, binding brakes, knackered alternator etc, etc.

My wife had a Peugeot 206cc that was also a piece of shit. Before it was 2 years old the window regulator packed up (it had an electric folding roof and was pillarless), brake calliper needed replacing, trim hits kept falling off but worst of all it kept going into limp home mode. Toon it back several times for them to sort but all they did was run a diagnostic test which came back clear. Was at the point of going down the legal route with them when my wife fell pregnant so we cut our losses and traded it in for a Golf.

The best has got to be my 1970 MGB. Have owned it since ‘97 and it still puts a smile on my face whenever I drive it. Have had so many great trips in it (Le Mans, Goodwood, various rallies etc) could never contemplate changing it.
  • Best: Alfa Romeo 156 she was my Christine I loved everything about her & wouldn’t here a word against her despite mrs spitfire detesting it since it broke down on the way home from buying it, she caused me many arguments & mrs spitfire was always going to be jealous of a thing of such beauty

Worst: Alfa Romeo 156 she just never bloody worked her electrics were a nightmare & I got nagged about her daily for 18 months but I was even happy just sat in her waiting on the motorway for the AA (as long as mrs spitfire wasn’t in me ear)

I was averaging around 40mpg. But signed up to their forum and got lots of good tips to get the best out of her.
  • Worst Citroen LNA11E
    Best, my current Ford Fiesta.
Not had that many motor cars.
  • On a different note if I may, how many cars have you owned....since 1981 I have only owned 8....and one for 3 months...since 1989 I have owned 3 cars...4 if I include an Astra I earned 3 years ago which I gave the wife....

    Just did a tally up - 24 cars since 1974 - 15 owned and 9 company cars.

Since 1977, 5 or 6 cars, a works Ford Escort van and a couple of Ford Transits , I miss the Transit vans , they are so useful .
  • Worst - My first car, a Triumph Dolomite 1300 with an incurable oil leak.
Best - or at least my favourite, a 1995 Rover 416. Lovely car to drive let down only by the usual cylinder head gasket failure. Currently have a Hyundai i30, which has been surprisingly good, but I'm about to take delivery of a Honda Civic so I'm hoping that will turn out to become my best ever car.

Bloody hell... did you go round the clock in those transits...

Revision to my worst car. Mitsubishi Starwagon bought when I was living in Jakarta. I believe Mitsubishi used to send in the parts from Japan to an assembly plant in Indonesia. Terrible clunky gear box, poor air conditioning etc. Lucky for me I only had to drive it occasionally as the company covered the costs of hiring a driver.
  • Best
    Opal Manta gte.
    Worst Austin Allegro.
  • Worst  Austin Allegro
Best  Vauxhall Carlton Gsi 3000 or in later life the Ssang Yong Rexton
Loved my gsi and wanted the lotus version but never got round to it, that's life I guess.
  • All my cars have been pretty crap. Hard to pick the worst.

  • Austin 1300 was a bag of shit, AudiTT Purely as a fast, reliable machine was a blast, only had it 3 years, totally non family car but it got me about the UK @ 55mpg, quickly.
  • Had 23 or 24 cars, basically a list of automotive hideousness from the 70s and 80s.

Worst three have to be the Dolomite 1850, the Citroen XM and the brown Morris ital estate, which went for saucepans when the diff went after three weeks of ownership.

Best was the 1998 Saab 9000 CSE anniversary edition in Amethyst (basically metallic purple). Never have I had a car so comfortable, the seats in that were a thing of beauty.
Current 2005 X-type diesel is a very close second - does everything well, but after 190,000 miles, emissions will do for it next year. Only passed this year because I pulled the sticker off.
