Not very promising but forecasts are notoriously unreliable here as you know. It may dry up for a few hours in the middle of the day, but more rain is expected later (and tomorrow). And of course it’s glorious weather now in PE!

The rain has stopped for the moment. The covers are coming off but there are puddles near the square which the ground staff are starting to mop up.

Starting in 5 mins. Woakes comes in for Bess, as Archer injured himself again in the warm-up. 3 changes for South Africa - Bavuma for Hamza (but will bat 6), Pretorius back again and left arm seamer Hendricks for left arm spinner Maharaj. No much spin in store over the next few days! England win the toss again and bat. Here we go.

Would have liked to see us go at it from losing the toss and fielding. Poor SA! The game is over already

    Crawley gets 50
  • Crawley batting himself into the team at 3 ahead of Denly?
  • does anyone know what time stumps will be today?

A bit of pressure on Denly now. He's GOT to make a big score soon

We think 6pm local time. 35 overs still to be bowled in theory in 2 hours after tea.
  • will be interesting to see who misses out of the top 3 if both denly and Crawley score runs in this match. Assuming burns walks straight back in

Not that long ago we we're struggling to find anyone good enough to bat in the top three.
When Burns is fit we will have 4 batsmen contesting the top 3 spots.
Can only be a good thing.

Lunch, day one of England's 1,022nd Test match.  England have scored 499,914 runs.

I think burns and sibley will open. Crawley would benefit from another year of county cricket. Denly won’t improve but has experience on his side.

Sibley and Crawley both supposed to be on the Lions tour to Aus after SA - if he makes runs there as well it will create a great headache for the selectors

While it would be good experience of Australian conditions, it seems odd to me for them to play for the main England team then go back to the Lions before potentially another main England tour
  • Here comes the collapse, 245 all out!

Longer term Burns to bat 3 and captain?

Isn't Burns around Root's age or older even?

Yes but in no way is Root going to captain until he retires.

Yes, but Root has aged 5 years in the last 2.

Once again Denners gets a score between 25 and 50..... needs to go on sooner or later
  • A streaky 27 isn't exactly the way to cement your place in the team going forward...

Maybe Joe will save himself with the ball, as he turns it square later in the match!

Crawley is the 15th player to make increasing scores in his 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th Test innings. the first Englishman since Harold Larwood in the 1920's!
