Very sad to see the injury for Sir Erec, but that's a great result for me.

That's absolutely gutting. Could not give a shit about the money. RIP.

Of course, nothing can be done for him right now, but I was put on to the Racehorse Sanctuary last year by @killer kish and others for anyone else wishing to make a donation to those involved in rehabilitating and caring for racehorses once they've retired:

Why did he run after that? Gross negligence.

I didn't watch the race - what happened? I heard he spread a plate going down and I'm assuming a vet checked him over?

lost a shoe going down to the start .. stood calmly while reshod .. was checked over by a vet but a VERY perfunctory check .. horse broke down after about 1/2  mile with a broken leg .. Jockey Club official (I think) surmised that a horse standing for a long time on 3 legs might have weakened the one that broke ..
horse was bred for the flat, perhaps not sturdy enough for NH (my opinion) ..

A hell of a coincidence for a horse to break a leg minutes after having a new shoe fitted.
I'm not saying the Farrier didn't do a good job but a horse having  one leg in the air for 4 minutes just before a race could've a bearing on the injury.

Go on then. Why was it a stupid comment? Horse clearly was not race ready yet they ran him anyway.

Why was he not race ready? Horses get re-shod at the start of races every day of the week, without any problem.
It was a horrible accident, but that is all that it was, an accident.

I’d like to see some data on this to determine whether the number of incidents increased in such situations. Easy to brush it off and say it happens all the time.

Flat horse standing on three legs for an extended period, no time to warm up before jumping hurdles...

    Recipe for a tragedy.

I'm not sure that can be said with such certainty. It is not rare for horses to be re-shod at the start after spreading a plate and I'm not aware of any known risk. Horses can sleep standing up by locking three legs and lifting or relaxing the other, taking all the weight off.

The horse may simply have jarred his leg in a divot - it happens (thankfully rarely), and it may well have just been a coincidence.
