FIFA Club World Cup

After watching the Copa Libertadores final this week, I'm really looking forward to River Plate v Real Madrid in this (assuming both get to the final). Competition started today with Al-Ain (from UAE) knocking out New Zealand's Wellington. Arguably a ridiculous competition until the final, but I'll be following it anyway. Anyone else on here with a slight interest how the fantastically named Kashima Antlers will do, or the tournament in general?

With the exception of Chelsea in 2012, the European team has one it every year since 2007.

The vast majority have been against the South American team in the final, as you’d expect.

Wellington were 3-0 up at half time against the champion hosts but surrendered the lead in the second half. There were no further goals in extra time and the Wellington skipper fluffed the final penalty sending the Wellington side out 4-3 on penalties.

Al-Ain and Kashima Antlers through to the semi finals against River Plate and Real Madrid respectively now: surely the two big teams will make easy work of these to set up what should be an entertaining final.

Got given a ticket for the Madrid semi final on Wednesday night. Real should obviously win but i don't think it'll be completely straightforward for them, especially given their problems this season plus the Japanese side have already been out here for a week.

    Decent semi final on now.

River Plate 2 Al Ain 2, nearly an hour gone.

Be quite funny if the local side win.

Blatant dive for a pen to River but Martinez smashes it against the bar. The locals somehow hanging on here against a barrage of River attacks.

Shock result - was completely expecting a River Plate - Real Madrid final.

Unbelievable. River dominated the game but somehow couldn't score a winner, then in the shootout the Al Ain keeper went the wrong way on every pen until the last one.

Bet Liverpool are almost relieved they didn't win the Champions League last year. This silly competition would be a big distraction from what really matters.

Moving to a 24 club tournament in 2021. With this and the new European Nations League, we're getting some additions to our normal World Cup/European Championship plus annual Champions League/Europa League calendar. Good news for football fans or football overkill?

Think its something like past four years Champions League and Europa League winners/runners up qualify plus Copa Libertadores recent winners and African/Asia/North America club champions.

Not sure how this will go down with the big teams.

Football overkill, players are going to get rich but will burn out early!

I’m sure when this was suggested all the big European clubs issued a joint statement saying they would boycott.

Doesnt make sense and you'd feel that it would be dominated hugely by the European teams simply thanks to the spending power and league reputations they have over South American Nations and the rest of the world

Believe that the best format is the current one at present where the Oceania and Host (?) Nations start first and have to get through a couple of games to reach the likes of Real Madrid or Boca Juniors

Its not like the International Stage either where a Nation could have an influx of youngsters coming through to propel them up the World Rankings... Cant ever imagine the owner of Air New Zealand for example purchasing Auckland City so they can win the OFC Champions League (Nearly always going to be a team from New Zealand) and then win the Club World Cup... If anything they'll go and buy a European club because the prize money and prestige is greater

With a goal that late you'd think it was Charlton getting beat!

Not sure what's happened more this season, Liverpool scoring an injury time goal or us conceding one.

    87 minutes gone
    0-0 in the final

Other than a chance after 40 seconds when Firminho was 1 on 1 and put it over Liverpool gavent had any clear cut chances and could even be behind.

Now watch the injury time winner

Why wasnt a free kick given? - Or did the referee deem it was a dive? - Definitely looked to be contact

It was a foul.  It was outside the box.  If you think it wasn't a foul (it was) then the decision should have been to restart the match with the goalkick that Mane conceded by blasting wide.  The VAR team should have been able to decide everything about that, without delegating it back to the ref.  In the end, the ref was given the wrong angle from which to make the right decision.

It's a perfect example of exactly how VAR shouldn't work.

I put that post before the decision got completely clarified, I thought a FK had been given

Definitely poor from VAR for it not to be
