    Heard helicopter around lunchtime and on the eltham Facebook page rumours of a woman and daughter being attacked by man with hammer in Eltham and being airlifted to hospital. Reports of him being husband of daughter but varying accounts of info that was contradictory.

    Two women are fighting for their lives after being attacked in the street by a stranger, Scotland Yard has said.

    Detectives are looking for a man who is believed to have mental health issues.

    Members of the public are being told not to approach Joe Xuereb, 27, from Greenwich, southeast London.

    The women were targeted in a "horrific" attack in Adderley Gardens in Greenwich on Sunday.

    Officers were called at 12.10pm to find the victims, aged 30 and 64, suffering from injuries "consistent with a violent assault".

    Police helicopter hovering over Sidcup five mins ago, then headed off towards Eltham.

    Arrested in old farm avenue. A lady spotted him and rang 999.

    Yeah agree with this but having mental health issues does not justify attacking people with a hammer.

    Some really dumb comments about mental health on here - nobody knows the facts as far as I'm aware?

    I hope the victims are okay and I'm pleased the attacker has been caught. I imagine the full facts will come out in the near future.

It is however worth noting the fact that the man has mental health issues that may or may not have contributed to this tragic event. None of us know what those issues might be. Like it or not there are a lot of people out there with massive problems. Recognising that does not make anyone a “snowflake”.

    Let’s hope the two ladies make a full recovery.

    Bullshit.

    Who the hell on here, or anywhere in fact, has said the assailant is the victim? Clearly the two women are the victims, they have my sympathy (before I melt), and I wish them a full and speedy recovery.

    Insanity has been a valid defence in the UK since 1843, and in the case of murder or manslaughter the defence of diminished responsibility has been on the statute book since 1957 to give a broader definition. Quite rightly so.

    It doesn't make the assailant the victim.

    You may be right but a lot of heinous crimes are now prefixed with the perp having “mental issues”. Call me cynical but I feel this is happening here. You say he had mental health issues but you don’t know that. You’re just believing what you’ve read in the media. If he had drug issues, is that the same as mental issues? There is a difference for me.

    There is also a difference in law - insanity or diminished responsibility is not a valid defence if the assailant was acting under the influence of drugs.

    Sadly my Mum has mental issues as well... paranoid scritozephenia (excuse the spelling). She doesn't self harm nor is she a threat to anyone but the knock on affect it gets me down. Her illness is due to to wild imagination and the police are aware as she imagines them and calsl the police, (or used to). The local police are aware of my other's illness so when she has the odd momentI will get a call from the police first just to suspect if I think something is tru and wether they need to send someone out. The fact that well before they arrested him they put out that he has mentail health issues it is probably known. The mental health service is appallaing. Last year it was so bad I took the advice of the out of hours health team who told me to ring 999. I called 999. She was in a medical ward first (as she was physically unwell) and then went to Oxleas. T thought great, at least she is in there. Then I got a call from Oxleas to say she would be going back to medcail work at QE. A few days/week later I was contacted by the medical ward to say she is medically fit to come out from the hospital ward. I queried this? and they said "oh we are not aware of any other issues". WTF. Needless to say I she never made it to Oxleas. So frustrated I put on FB that I jsut feel lkie killing myself (not wanting to do it) So many friens and work colleagues got in touch. I went to the local MP, we have a social worker. However, we are still waiting for her to go into alternative accomodation with extra care. Trust me I am finding it very difficult to live with. I don't sleep well. I get stressed out a lot. The social worker is great in that she confirmed that she is trying to get into a place by the end of the year.
