100% this - he's not a midfielder and hasn't been a threat as a striker for years - was exposed as the has been he is in the second half in particular - a truly awful performance and roy got what he deserved for building the team around him - he isn't good enough to do that and i hope, and think he will, retire from england asap.Valley11 said:Sorry but Rooney was atrocious. Hart needs to chill out. At the last Euros we went out to penalties against Italy, and Hart was diving too early. It turned out he spent all night watching where the Italians would put their kicks on the internet. The great Buffon responded when he heard this that he had spent all night searching for porn! That is the difference - a few of those England lads had a Gazza look during the national anthym.3

Our record goalscorer has got himself sent off in 2006, gave the penalty away in 2008 that put Russia above us, slated the fans in 2010, managed 1 goal in 2012, in 2014 was part of England's worst tournament since 1950, in 2016 was our captain and subbed off in favour of a wildcard kid.
How this guy took the mantle off Bobby Charlton is beyond me.8 -

I agree Morgan a proper defender. Cahill and Smalling get bullied so easily aerially. Iceland took the decision a few years ago they wanted to be the best they could at Football. They invested in facilities and coaching. They now have a UEFA a credited coach for every 500 people in the population. Basically as soon as you show an interested in playing football in Iceland, you'll probably get some kind of properly qualified coaching.
It's 1 coach for every 10,000 or something in England isn't it? And we've spent years selling off school playing fields and teams are coached by well meaning dads who have to clear dog shit out of the goal mouth before kick off.1 -

Yes, I recognise that, having cleared my fair share. Our youth football is too competetive at too young an age. Winning always trumps technique and improving it, but the England team do have some decent players. I think there are a whole host of different reasons.Exiled_Addick said:

We should look for at the youngster who looks up and tries to make a pass as a better bet than the player who dribbles past every opponent! Giacherrini is a fine example. Can't get into the Sunderland team. Look at him when he's being coached by Italians and got a manager who can set a team up. If he was English he would never have made it as a footballer as he would never have been big or strong, technically he is absolutely brilliant. At the end of the day the EPL is behind Spain, Italy and Germany, I don't care what you say. Going up against Ryan Shawcross is not the same as playing these brilliant defenders we see at these tournaments. Gary Cahill plays for chelsea for goodness sake! He wouldn't get into a single Serie A defence. Rooney called Smalling the 4th best CB in the world! He wouldn't even make it into the Iceland team for goodness sake!2

Think Roy made too many mistakes with his squad selection. To take Wilshire who hadn't played 90 minutes as wrong, leaving Drinkwater at home even worse. You should pick players who have had a good season, like Drinkwater, and play them. Even after four games he had no game plan and no real idea of his best side. One thing that's guaranteed, England will always let you down.1

Too much national pride, get in someone that is actually good enough to lead the team.

I am not sure why but I am truly stunned by that performance for all the wrong reasons.
I am not sure I have seen any side supposedly professionally coached show such little understanding of even the basic ability to break a side down.
There is a simple principle to the game of football - it is called pass and move and guess what when you have done that you pass and move again - and so and so on. Even if you move the ball 5 yards to the right or left quickly the defender will need to move even if you pass it back to where it came from.
I have never seen a side so static. It was almost surreal as time after time after time players just stood there looking at the player with the ball as if mystified as to what they were supposed to do.
It was if they suffered collective brain freeze. The lack of movement was if they had the players pretending to be cones in a practice match. It reminded me of games on a Sunday morning after a good few beers the night before with your mates almost pleading "please don't pass the ball to me, my head hurts".
That must have been the easiest game the Icelandic defence has ever had, we posed no challenge the entire game.
England players literally stood looking at each other - often standing behind or alongside a defender. After the penalty there was no attempt to drop off, pull away to drag defenders out opposition at all. We then seem terrified to put the ball into the danger area to let Kane, Sturridge or Sterling compete.
Much as I do not think Lallana provides the necessary goal threat at least he moves defenders around in tight and dangerous areas.
That was one of the most inept displays I have seen from any professional side let alone an international side. Brainless, unprofessional, undisciplined and lacking any cohesion whatsoever.
Not a football brain on display in a white shirt.
Congratulations to Iceland - they worked exceptionally hard, stuck to their game plan, could have scored twice more and deserved the victory.
For England that performance should be shown at every international training camp from now until eternity. Never again should we be embarrassed to such an extent.
I have had a great deal of time for Hodgson but Roy there was no need to write a resignation letter - your squad already wrote it for you.

We keep talking about getting good and then just continue with the status quo.
The FA is more than rich enough to rehabilitate some urban football pitches and subsidise some well meaning dads so they can become well qualified, well meaning coaches. Half Roy's annual salary would go quite a long way in its own. It wouldn't solve everything, but it'd be a start.1 -
