Ranking the London clubs in order of size

Just for fun. No right or wrong. Interpret 'size' however you like - could be season ticket sales, fan base, shirt sales, stadium size, league status, a combo of all of them, anything you like really.

Mine would be:

1. Chelsea
2. Arsenal
3. Tottenham
4. West Ham
5. Fulham
6. QPR
7. Charlton
8. Crystal Palace
9. Millwall
10. Brentford
11. Orient
12. Barnet
13. Wimbledon

Think you're spot on there Danny... However Palace have a larger fan base down here in surrey than in Landan.

I too would move us above Fulham and QPR - and I would put the Arse top ahead of Chelski.

I think Arsenal and bigger than Chelsea and Charlton are bigger than QPR. These west London clubs have been temporarily boosted by dirty money; when that is taken away the whole house of cards will topple and... well I can dream can't I?
  • Combo of all criteria and history and putting QPR's wealthy owner to one side

    1. Arsenal
    2. Chelsea
    3. Tottenham
    4. West Ham
    5. Fulham
    6. Charlton
    7. Crystal Palace
    8. QPR
    9. Millwall
    10. Brentford
    11. Orient
    12. AFC Wimbledon
    13. Barnet

We are definitely bigger than QPR and their horrible shoebox of a stadium. Fulham will slide down that list too now as their plastic premier league fans vanish.

    Arse
    Chelski
    Spuds
    Wet Spam
    Us
    Palarse
    Fulham
    QPR
    Millwank
    Brentford
    Orient
    Dons
    Barnet

I know 5th is high, but we've spent more seasons in the top flight, have a bigger and better stadium than the 3 teams immediately below, and have won the FA Cup

Sonic calls it about right. Palace, it has to be admitted, are above Fulham and QPR.

But I would put Wimbledon above Barnet

Looking forwards we are either challenging Fulham, Palace and QPR to be the fifth London club or we are messing about competing with Millwall, Brentford and Orient. I know where I would rather be.

These are the average attendances from World War 2 to 2013.

    Arsenal - 39,162
    Tottenham Hotspur - 35,864
    Chelsea - 32,462
    West Ham United - 25,639
    Crystal Palace - 16,598
    Charlton Athletic - 16,275
    Fulham - 15,981
    Queens Park Rangers - 14,178
    Millwall - 11,260
    Brentford - 9,122
    Leyton Orient - 7,466

Also seasons spent in the top flight (including this season)

    Arsenal - 98
    Chelsea - 80
    Tottenham Hotspur - 80
    West Ham United - 57
    Charlton Athletic - 26
    Fulham - 25
    Queens Park Rangers - 23
    Crystal Palace - 15
    Wimbledon - 14
    Brentford - 5
    Millwall - 2
    Leyton Orient - 1

    Clearly Arsenal are top
then comes Tottenham and Chelsea who are very close
    then West Ham
and then Us, Palace, QPR and Fulham who are again incredibly close.
then Millwall, Brentford, Orient and Wimbledon.

I'm basing my list solely on league placings from the 1936/7 season!

    1. Charlton
    2. Arsenal
    3. Brentford
    4. Chelsea

    5. West Ham
    6. Tottenham
    7. Fulham

    8. Millwall
    9. QPR
    10. Clapton Orient
    11. Crystal Palace

    - Barnet
    - Wimbledon

In the forties and fifties we would have been top of the list! Wonder if there is a Charlton life archive from back then! ;)

    I'd go with that.

I think our cup win and higher league finishes push us above the others in our group but it is close.

    Chelsea
    Arsenal
    Spurs
    West Ham
    Palace

Arsenal still had higher attendances than us during that period, they've always been London's biggest club.

Only if you base it purely on attendances. Chelsea are richer and have won plenty more trophies in the last few years. Again, all depends on personal criteria.

Cheers. There is argument for that I suppose, especially as we are now in the same division. I think they slightly edge it just because of recent history, attendances and financial clout. Brentford and Orient was the tough one for me.
