Yep, its cack. Jerusalem (but imagine it would cause a fair bit of confusion abroad) and Land of Hope and Glory are the ones I've always thought of but great shout from ValleyFred, I Vow To Thee My Country crushes it.
Gutted that I've managed to miss the marseillaise before both France games, THAT is a national anthem.0 -

The Beatles did a version of it also, as an intro to "All you need is love".Avi_dAddick said:

Moving ? In what way? It's dull and insepid .AFKABartram said:Like GSTQ, find it very patriotic and moving personally.
Never been a fan of Jerusalem.
Personally i would much prefer Land of Hope and Glory, and very surprised no one else has mentioned this yet.
Jerusalem is the only alternative in my opinion .0 -
Jerusalem's second verse is one of the few verses I ever loved singing at school. So much oomph and imagine singing that before a game! I vow to thee is just drab if you sing it, used to put me to sleep at school assembly.
Keep GSTQ for the UK events, Jerusalem for England, 'arry and st George!0 -
Jerusalem every day for me - a nice socialist song about wanting to build a better society! Maybe it includes building a better football team too.0

Suppose when Liz does a runner that it'll have to change anyway (even if only slightly) , you never know, maybe the incumbent might decide for change anyway? - no doubt The Sun will run a poll on it.1

people really can find anything to fit in with their own political/religious view.MuttleyCAFC said:Jerusalem every day for me - a nice socialist song about wanting to build a better society! Maybe it includes building a better football team too.

Was waiting for somebody to bite LOL - the fact is - like most anthyms - the meaning is for a different time - the words from Blake's original poem were about the slight of the mills etc... the capitalism of the time as it were! Which are not there today. But it is a good old tune which fits the bill for me above all else. People do make it fit with their views though which is a bit crazy as it is pretty clear what it is about!kentaddick said:

I recall reading an American review of Les Miserables - from a very right wing southerner! He said the fact that the show promoted revolution ruined it for him although he liked the religeous bit! Missed the point that it was written in a different time altogether and should be appreciated for the art that it is!0 -
thought I'd reboot this.
our national anthem is absolutely dreadful, not inspiring or rousing, just absolutely a depressing dull dirge, compared to other countries anthems!
I wouldn't sing it if you paid me.6 - Sponsored links:

Can't be too bad, twice as many countries at the Euro's sing it than any other !4
-
Iceland's last night was spellbinding. I'd rather we used Jerusalem or Land of Hope and Glory, or even GSTQ but rewrite the actual music to make it more rousing1
-
As a dirty foreign I have to say your anthem always gives me a giggle.
Apart from the fact it sounds like a church-hymn (and not even one of the good ones), the content of it is about how the head of state is fairly nice.
Our anthem is about being brave enough to fight the English2 -
Our anthem reflects the Queen's miserable face. She only smiles when she at the horse racing.4

Just think when we are singing it about Chuck and Cammi baby!sillav nitram said:thought I'd reboot this.

At least Liz has done the time. It is universally agreed that GSTQ is an absolute dirge...0 -
The Belgian anthem is particularly boring, worse than ours (which is at least short)
And of course the main issue with GSTQ is that it is the British National anthem, not the English one0 -
I'm sure she does, but what are her thoughts on the national anthem?flyingkiwiDK said:My wife likes it

I can't stand the tune for our national anthem, it's such a dirge. I much prefer the one from Liechtenstein.4

1. I vow to thee my country
2. Jerusalem
Would very much support changing it when The Queen pops her clogs.0 -
Yes, I have always admired Lichtenstein's too. It is so catchy, you only have to hear it once and somehow it sticks in the memory- I wonder what others think!!AddicksAddict said:I can't stand the tune for our national anthem, it's such a dirge. I much prefer the one from Liechtenstein.

I noticed the Belgian anthem had lyrics in three languages the other day - French and Dutch I assume are two, what's the third ?killerandflash said:The Belgian anthem is particularly boring, worse than ours (which is at least short)

Well I love it, and I'll always sing it with pride regardless of all the political high horsing that comes around it whenever the topic comes up.3

I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts would be my choice.1
-
Three lions. Only song that works for me. I like the Welsh one though. They love a good singalong0
-
Russian, French, German, Italian are all good.1
-
We should really surprise Wales and have smack my bitch up, and then proceed to kick Gareth Bale across the channel.2
-
I think it's so dull and boring, you want an uplifting and motivating anthem before kicking a ball around for your country that gives you goosebumps too.0
-
I love our National Anthem.
It's ours and I don't care in the slightest what other countries anthems are like.
It does the job and it ain't changing any time soon, thankfully.
