Yes you were in the wrong. No it isn't worse than racism. Whether some Brighton fans thought it was funny or not has nothing to do with it. Any that were gay would probably have found it difficult to challenge you about it. Not to mention those who had nothing to do with the match. To those who are not able to respond because they feel intimidated, banter like this is bullying, which is the first step on the way to hate crime. I'm sure it was youthful high spirits and bad luck not getting in to see the match, but you f***ed up, no one else. I've done similar stuff myself, and worse, in years gone past because I couldn't resist "a joke"and only years later looked back and cringed at myself.3

thing is, you have learnt a lesson and won't do it again (we hope) .. lots of coppers on duty, lots of expenditure on 'security' and peace keeping = a few people get nicked and/or cautioned to prove that the money was well spent and the security blanket was worthwhile .... you were unlucky but a bit naïve not to say arrogant to get into the situation in the first place .. hurling insults about even in a jocular fashion as you saw it is never worth it .. you gave the OB reason to nick you .. and they did0

It is laughable, but isn't that the point? The police's interpretation of the law is also laughable. Being unfunny isn't a crime (except Miranda, now that's criminal). If it's wrong to chant 'Does your boyfriend know you're here' it's equally wrong to chant 'Does your girlfriend know you're here' if it's about harassment on the basis of sexual orientation. Is it to see the amusing expressions of a shocked reaction from the general populace? Is it to exhibit a stunningly original bit of humour to others? Is it to imply that Brighton fans are somewhat diminished compared to the 100% hetrosexual Charlton support...because it is indeed laughable to imply that all Addicks are hetrosexual. Is it funny because the implication is that to a Brighton fan their football is their unfaithful love compared to their partner? It may even be because it is supposed to be a witty chant to an old tune...I can't see how it is particularly funny?
Surely our support can be more original and creative in it's chants, and actually be a bit funny?
It's all a bit puerile to be honest - I wouldn't be chanting that stuff, and certainly not on the street - but whenever this comes up I can't help but recall that documentary on homosexuals and football when Matt Lucas declared he found the chanting by away fans at Brighton funny and witty. There's a humour bypass going on here, and for the police to prevent the OP from attending the game because he chanted what he did is in my view a huge abuse of power. A warning would have been more than sufficient.
Frankly speaking, if you're chanting that in Brighton you're more likely to be reflecting the local populous than just about anywhere else in the country. Too many people getting offended on other people's behalf. It's not as if he's threatening anyone, after all.
That said, the original question was 'was it my fault?' - and the answer is undoubtedly yes; if you'd not chanted that stuff in the street none of it would have happened. Grow up, frankly.2 -

Also, how come Muslims extreamists can sing during a march from our soilders 'british soilders burn in hell' and our aloud to get away with it beacuse freedom of speach, but a i get pulled for singing a song, that noone found offencive, or no one reported??

oh and befor you all jump on the bandwagon, im not in anyway a 'hooligan' i go to games with my dad, have done for 14 years, the one away game i dont go with him this happens.

Speaking as Charlton's only gay fan (maybe), I don't find the chant hateful. It is childish and puerile but I've only heard it sung in a good-natured way. But while I may consider it to be banter, others might not. The police should have told you to stop because you might cause offence. It seems they went overboard.
If Charlton was heavily populated with gay clubs, pubs, saunas etc, and opposition fans sang it it us, I don't think I'd be upset. (I have a very nice boyfriend and he always knows I'm at the game because I'd have been getting stressed/excited about it all day). But I'm sure some of our straight and narrow-minded fans would get themselves into a right little tizzy if they were on the receiving end.
When I sing, it's only in support of the Addicks. I grew out of wasting my time by singing abuse/banter at opposition fans.8
