Promotion hasn’t happened yet. That should be the only focus.
The championship is hard, and getting the fifty points if we get there would be the aim I think.1 -

In terms of skills gaps between leagues, Champ to Premier, I obv agree based on recent seasons. However, it looks like all 3 promoted league one clubs will stay up this season (Portsmouth already are, Oxford close, maybe Derby in trouble), so I don't think the gap is as big as some are making out between L1 and Champ.Lincsaddick said:

Look at the defence- "foot through the ball"-reduces the risk of a misplaced pass to midfield.
Lloyd Jones has flourished without the responsibility of bringing the ball down and passing in pressure situations.
(Remember misplaced passes last season)
Its the role of midfield/attack to. win the ball and keep it in the attacking third.
Godden has been feeding off scraps the season. He has the ability to score more has been limited by the few chances we create as we frequently lose the ball .
If he had been in a footballing team -say Birmingham or Bolton (in previous seasons) he would have had more goal opportunities and scored more.
So we are a hoof ball team being successful through being ultra competitive and physical fast and strong.
Foot through the ball- few goals conceded avoiding unnecessary mistakes.
Goals "for" OK- due to talented strikers particularly Godden ( and Leaburn when fit) feeding off scraps.
My concerns are
- we will be outplayed by more skilful teams . Whether we meet them this season or next (in the Championship?) thats when we will struggle.
-will we be able to attract skilful players in the next transfer window. We will need another major rebuild if we change our "style", if we don't we have another short stay .
- will we be able to attract good academy talent (if they watch the first team play)
In short we are heading up a blind alley.A false dawn. Sure a transfer window flush with money and good player selection could change that.
IF (when) promoted we will need strengthening, i m o, especially in midfield and attack. Unfortunately Matt Godden and Luke Berry aren't getting any younger and we can't rely on Dixon and Mbick to take up that slack immediately.
Our defence is solid and I reckon can do a job in the Champ. Also, it's a fairly young set.
Will Mannion has improved outta sight as a reliable keeper. (Playing behind a rock solid, consistent defence always makes a keeper's job 'easier')
As said, investment in the team and careful recruitment will be vital to retain our hard fought Champ spot. MONEY and how it's spent as ever will be absolutely vital. Staying up for the first season is imperative. Charlton Athletic is a BIG club and given shrewd ownership and management I reckon we will thrive over the coming seasons

I think the gap that has opened up in the last 5 years or so is between the approx. top 12 teams in the Championship and the rest of the clubs in that division. Getting into the Championship from L1 and staying there is a significant challenge but kicking on by breaking into that Championship top 10 and staying there is probably harder.8 -

aaah yeah , i remember thinking i recognise those youngsters behind me at Wycombe, who caught me red handed geeking over the table (obviously at Charlton but couldn't picture where ) I've been covered end lower, east stand , west upper , NWQ , family stand and now west lower throughout the years since our return .paulsturgess said:

So i really only had 1 kid i took football when in NWQ and i asked him a couple of weeks back do you remember hartlepool last game of the season , red devils , singers , Kermorgants goal he was 6 and i flew back early from Vegas to take him , the fucker doesn't remember any of it ffs

show them the improvements in Small, Ramsey, Coventry, Campbell and Edwards in one season under NJ. Show them the opportunities we give young players to thrive and rebuild careers.Show them the team spirit. Show them the ones that have left before and gone on to great things. It adds up to a pretty compelling argument imo.Maybe we won’t pick up the small tricky players but Jones won’t want them anyway.

I expect we’d keep some of them, four of the five are under contract. If we don’t go up I can’t see us selling all of them.CafcSCP said:

So if we don't go up you expect them all to move on up the leagues to improve themselves... Fair enough and clearly a big rebuild would be needed but it would only reemphasize the point I made about us being in a good position to pick up excellent young talent.
Falling out of a PL academy, join us, get experience we have an amazing track record of improving young players and in a year or so you can move on.0 -
