Find it hard to believe that both Sean Roughan and Paudie O'Connor are gonna end up in League1 again with Huddersfield and Wycombe.
Especially O'Connor, we should be all over him if we persist with a back 5, he's literally Lloydys twin.
Just speculating but maybe O'Connor is aware he might not get much game time ahead of Jones. Obviously all players back themselves and love a challenge but plenty are realistic with this stuff too
I would say more so it's cause we probably aren't interested.
Which is a shame as he would probably start for us or at the very least be good cover in a championship squad. Him and Lloyd as 2 of your back 3 centre backs, good luck with any type of aerial threat.
Maybe get Piergianni in and complete the trio. :-)
One of the highest rated players in the league for the third successive season, imagine my shock.
Only Jones & O'Connor above him statistically for defenders. Piergianni is a top, top defender.
for a middling League 1 club
He is bang average.. honestly 2 years been going on about him. Yes, he wins his headers, but he is slow, passing isn’t great, and gets spun a lot.
You do realise his name wouldn't have even popped up if @Callumcafc wasn't trying to be funny?
I've not mentioned him in a while as we have better now, but he is undeniably a good defender.
Team of the season last year, team of the season in League 2. The highest rated player on WhoScored last season, a very reputable stat metric site, the third highest rated centre back this season only behind Paudie and Lloydy, that's on most stat trackers I've seen. I'm sorry but bang average players can't show that kind of consistency. He also absolutely dealt with Chuks physically, not many centre backs achieve that. The captain of a side that have been punching above their weight for 3 seasons now and is arguably one of the main reasons they have been able to.
I'm not his agent but it's just ridiculous how people can say a player is bad that is better than about 90% of the centre backs we have had in ten years.
I feel at lot will depend on how much NJ believes he can rely on the U21s such as Asiimwe, Zak, Enslin, etc can provide effective cover.
If he thinks, for example, Asiimwe has learnt enough from his time with Walsall to be back up then we only need one right back such as Offiah.
There is also the question of whether Miles will be fit in time. Either way I think we need at least one or more likely two more front players and another CB such as Famewo.
That makes five signings including Carey by my count as a minimum.
I'd imagine that Ramsay would be the cover for Offiah (if he signs), and if OO is injured Ramsay just moves across with another centre back coming in. Asiimwe i think will be loaned out.
The problem we have in going up a division is that it probably makes it less likely for any of our kids to come in. Jones didn't fancy many of them at league one level so he's unlikely to risk them in the championship, and we also now (thank god) don't have the EFL trophy games to give them minutes, so at best i think Zak Mitchell will stay and i'd expect the likes of Asiimwe, Enslin, Mbick to be loaned out.
Only Leaburn and TC have any business in the matchday squad next season, the rest need loans.
Karoy could do with a full season loan under his belt for a League1 team, could argue the same for Kanu, or even League2, as long as they both play 40+ games. Would like to see Zak also get a loan for a decent league 1 side.
Loan the rest where we can, if they couldn't make an impression in League 1 under Jones, it can only get worse.

They can make a good impression without being thrown in during the run in for 2nd and the playoff campaign.
It’s easier to bring one or two through during preseason and ease them into the first team during August and September than it is when you’re fighting for promotion in April and May.
My guess is we’ll make several good signings, but it won’t be as many as we’d hope for, and we’ll see a few more academy players get their chance, even though we’ll be playing at a higher level.
The question would obviously be "what is his nickname going to be"
Great Balls or Chariots
Depends how good his passing turns out to be.
Chariots is his uncle's (a star R L player of yesteryear) nickname and has been for the best part of 40 years .. IF IF he signs for us I fancy 'Wheels on Fire' .. recalling the great cover version of the Dylan song by Julie Driscoll and the Trinity or indeed the 'Cream' album .. Wheels of Fire https://youtu.be/6eJHKjV1ecs

Don’t think it’s that simple. For starters I think Karoy will remain involved, in that impact sub role he really made his own at the end of last season
But it’s very difficult for us to judge, last time we were in the championship Alfie Doughty became one of our best players, you’d have been laughed at for suggesting him as even a squad player at the start of the season. Players develop at different rates, someone could have a really strong pre-season and impress Jones with how they’ve developed. With 9 subs it’s almost easier to give opportunities to young players at this level than it is in league 1
I think Kanu is the one that definitely needs a loan, he’s not played enough football. I’m sure a few of the rest will end up on loan but probably not before Jones has a look in pre-season
Ramsay is a better RCB than RWB as his strength is tackling / out muscling strikers.
When he played RWB he looked lost in the final third & was poor at crossing.
Hopefully OO will play the wing back role & Ramsay will stay in the position he performed so well in last season.
If you actually compare them Ramsay is much better going forward than Offiah is. Ramsay only played 7 games at wingback which was right at the start where we didn’t even try to play down the wings at all it was just cb right into the strikers even TC didn’t drift out at this point. Ramsay is definitely a better RCB than Wingback but if we do bring Offiah in, Ramsay would definitely be the better wingback option.

The likes of Enslin, Mbick and especially Kanu, Mitchell and Asiimwe are beyond U21 football and without any EFL trophy games they're going to be limited to very few first team minutes.

Realistically though, we have a handful of players who will probably struggle, we won't be able to move them on so they'll have to be involved in some capacity. Anderson is promising but needs a loan. Running around as a sub again for a year will halt his progress, I can't see him breaking into the team yet, so we should be trying to get him a loan.
Leaburn at his best is definitely ready, so is TC, Karoy reminds of George Lapslie a bit. Technically limited but a 100%er who gets about a lot. Just don't think he should be a bit part player and needs to play a lot of games next season.

When we played at Blackpool, Offiah's greatest strength WAS in 'going forward', indeed he created one of their goals with a ferocious surge down the right followed by a super pass into midfield .. he also took no prisoners in defence, he is a big, tough young man .. I do wonder if Brighton really want to part with him

Generally it probably is, but they need to be the right loans in terms of club, manager, playing style, game time etc. It might be harder to find L1 or better L2 clubs willing to give Enslin, Mbick and so on their first loan. I can see it happening with Mitchell and Asiimwe as they’ve both had a couple of loans.
If Jones really rates a certain player he might give them more game time than we’d expect, Doughty mentioned above is a great example of how quickly players can progress, he had been on loan in non-league that season.

I just don’t think it’s that simple. Not every player needs a loan
Karoy can continue developing by being around a championship squad and with Jones coaching him, he can get regular minutes off the bench, the odd start and if he continues to develop he will get more starts. He could have come on a lot between now and August, Jones will definitely want to have a look
Some players need loans but others it will be judged that it is better for their development to remain with us

I'm not sure Karoy is far behind TC, if at all. TC had a great 4-5 game spell near the end of the season (and a couple mid-season with Miles), but before that flattered to deceive for a lot, and struggled as soon as managers really started to focus on him.

Agree with most of this but Karoy will 100% be in NJ’s plans. Karoy’s game needs to further develop, particularly consistency in passing, but in terms of being a willing, effective and non-stop presser, I think he is one of our best and NJ values his work-rate and contributions in closing out games.
He is a lot more than a presser of the ball but think the other areas are what will be worked on at Charlton while in the Championship.
I am not sure NJ rates Kanu as much as many of us based on his appearance time and for Zak it is probably worth him having another season long loan in the Scottish Prem or the like to help him evolve from boy to man (like Scott Parker when he had his stint at Nawrich…).
I’d expect Kanu, Mitchell and Asiimwe to probably go out on loan. Though I think Mitchell and Asiimwe could put their names forward in pre-season to be involved in our squad instead
Dixon, Mbick, Enslin, Fullah will be kept around and might get non-league loans throughout the season. With 9 subs i think they could get opportunities off the bench though
Karoy will be as involved as he was this season, won’t be going anywhere

Pretty sure I read on here that the club are moving away from non-league loans unless the team are fully professional as they feel that they actually hamper players development. Obviously the NL is getting more and more professional but it's hard to find teams who play in a similar style too
I might well be in the minority, but I see Karoy having a big season for us.
His development since last summer is more than impressive and that's with limited minutes on the pitch. The fact he came on at Wembley and tried that lovely play which Godden nearly scored from shows his confidence is also growing.
For other academy players and youngsters such as Kaheim, I'm certain TC's previous summer transformation will be on there minds and discussed with the fitness/health team at the club about how they can do something similar.

Pretty sure I read on here that the club are moving away from non-league loans unless the team are fully professional as they feel that they actually hamper players development. Obviously the NL is getting more and more professional but it's hard to find teams who play in a similar style too
That makes sense, I guess if they are local teams then they can still train with us for part of the week, but I can see why that’s not seen as ideal for development
Regarding karoy I can see all points tbh.For the sake of His own development as a player and for charlton He would be better off loaned out and getting more games to improve his technique but also there is no other player id rather see brought on for the last 20-30 mins harassing the opposition when we are keeping it tight and seeing out a close game.Should we invest in better players in the window then option 1 a loan becomes more of a possibility but until then we don't have the squad to let him go atm imo.
Does the window shut for championship and below … I know it will mean we can’t buy Haaland but we can wait a week I suppose
Yes it shuts for everyone. It usually doesn't open until mid-June anyway (official opening is 12 weeks before the start of the Premier league season), the only reason it's opened for these 10 days is for teams in the CWC to sign players.
Teams can still sign players anyway, they just won't be 'official' until 16 June when it reopens.

How he matches up against our player of the year:
Karoy could do with a full season loan under his belt for a League1 team, could argue the same for Kanu, or even League2, as long as they both play 40+ games. Would like to see Zak also get a loan for a decent league 1 side.
Loan the rest where we can, if they couldn't make an impression in League 1 under Jones, it can only get worse.

They've been getting a few things right tbf the last few days, usually useless.
The likes of Enslin, Mbick and especially Kanu, Mitchell and Asiimwe are beyond U21 football and without any EFL trophy games they're going to be limited to very few first team minutes.
Leaburn at his best is definitely ready, so is TC, Karoy reminds of George Lapslie a bit. Technically limited but a 100%er who gets about a lot. Just don't think he should be a bit part player and needs to play a lot of games next season.
If Jones really rates a certain player he might give them more game time than we’d expect, Doughty mentioned above is a great example of how quickly players can progress, he had been on loan in non-league that season.
Karoy can continue developing by being around a championship squad and with Jones coaching him, he can get regular minutes off the bench, the odd start and if he continues to develop he will get more starts. He could have come on a lot between now and August, Jones will definitely want to have a look
Some players need loans but others it will be judged that it is better for their development to remain with us
He is a lot more than a presser of the ball but think the other areas are what will be worked on at Charlton while in the Championship.
