Semi Ajayi is a local lad, started here and went to Dartford Grammar I believe. Always thought he was great at West Brom when I've watched them. Could be a great fit.
He is always injured now. Can’t see us taking him. Would have been the right fit under previous regime’s.
Someone I know spoke to Paul Elliot before the final who told him four signings if we stay down, five if we go up.
That seems very conservative to me and I hope that it is more like 8 or 9 but I guess NJ will maybe want to prioritise quality over quantity,
Under promise, over deliver?
Though I don’t think the plan for a smaller squad drastically changes, I still think we’ll make more use of u21s than as a fanbase we generally feel comfortable with. They didn’t have to have so many of that group as part of the squad at Wembley, and I assume they’re the one who regularly train with the first team.
Guessing the number of signings we make is going to depend on the trust in our youth. We have 16 players who are either senior players or featured regularly for us this year but then you add Asiimwe, Z.Mitchell, Mbick, Dixon, and then potentially Fullah/Enslin as well and that gives you a lot of money for 4/5 quality first XI players which may be all we need especially since Jones likes a smaller squad will also depend on outgoings as well
Midfielders Hakeem Odoffin (Rotherham) Sonny Carey (Blackpool) Jacob Sorensen (Norwich)
John Swift (West Brom)
Winger/Striker Grady Diagana (West Brom) Ricky Jade Jones (Peterborough) Aaron Connolly (Millwall)
Striker Mustaphu Bundu (Plymouth) Emil Riis (Preston)
Be happy with signing any of these free agents could definitely do a job if not in the starting XI then a bit more quality as squad players if the circumstances are right
All extremely good players. Any of those would add to our very capable championship squad. I expect us to comfortably finish mid-table or even push for the play-offs.

My interpretation of what Elliott was saying ( I also met him on route to Mansfield) is that the 4 / 5 were already agreed.
I too would hope there are more as the window opens.
If they were already lined up, I assume they would be free agents or loans, as it seems unlikely we'd have agreed fees with other clubs that early.
Just can’t see this ‘5 already lined up’ rumour being true. As we know the players we go for have options and why would they commit so early? It’s not like we are going to be paying the top rates in the champ.
I think it’s very unlikely we have five players agreed to join.
I also heard we had players that had agreed in principle to joining based on which division and that was some weeks ago. I guess it’s a bit like the Thierry Small situation. I suspect he’s agreed a deal elsewhere to.

Love Norman Rockwell. One of his four freedoms IIRC.

I hear you but really hope youth players already with us aren’t used to excess. I’d much rather we focused on securing a second season in the champ before worrying about improving our youths again.
We are shopping in a bigger market now anyway, championship calibre only.
Shopping in that market will be incredibly tough. Roughan has all the qualities for the champ. My concern would be his age and consequent experience.
I saw the Bolton fans links. I’d wager it would be a big LG1 team that has done this. But given our signing of Alex Mitchell last year, maybe something in it.
Correct me if I'm wrong but NJ hasn't signed many players who he hasn't come into contact with in a previous life - so any such are the transfer rumours I would take most seriously.

That and any cheap Europeans that PC came near to signing for Brighton.

Big difference now is that he trusts Phil Chapple to come up with players that will fit into Jones ethos.

For me Docherty, hypothetically.
Docherty is a league1 quality player imo. I am expecting us to upgrade on him.
I think Jones should be club captain and Docherty shouldn't be starting. Might sound harsh but it just worries me how little he played for Hull and he's never really done it at this level.
Sorry to any Doc fans but I'd like to see us sign two new mids to play with Cov.
Wow, three seasons in the Championship and over 90 league games but "he's never done it at this level"?
We should, if we can, upgrade on Doc but the same can be said for every player in the side. You could argue he dropped down a level for a reason but to pretend he never did it is just nonsense.
Shall I now make a list of all the Charlton players that were awful but played a number of championship games?
When I say he didn't do it, I mean he didn't thrive in this league. If he did, he would have been kept by Hull. He couldn't even stand out in League1 if we are being honest.
We need better to progress, harsh but true.
More nonsense. You've gone from "never done it" to "didn't thrive"
He was kept by Hull, for three seasons, and then like most players at one time or another he moved on to be the captain of a promotion winning team in league one but that isn't enough somehow.
We do need better players to progress but that is no reason to dismiss the contributions that Doc and many others have made.
I just don't get this whole either/or justification. Someone can like both Chinese and Indian food. You don't have to run down one to like the other.
We can praise a player AND want better replacements
We don't have to write off a player, and in this case our captain who did contribute greatly, just to justify bringing in someone better, younger, fitter, more suited.
Ok. I believe a player isn't good, you believe otherwise.
I believe he was a passenger in the championship, you believe he was championship quality.
Moving on.
And your evidence for him being a "passenger" is?
Again, why make stuff up just to justify replacing him.
I'm not making anything up, it's a fucking opinion. Jesus Christ. I don't think he's very good. I am basing this off of watching every game this season, and seeing him fail to control a game.
24/25: League 1, 40 apps, 4 goals 2 assists. 23/24: 15 Champ apps, bit part player 22/23: 1940 minutes of Champ football 21/22: 40 champ apps, 1 goal, 2842 mins, 71 mins average per game 20/21: Very good league 1 numbers, 5 goals, 5 assist, 44 appearances 19/20: Scottish prem, 6 apps, bit part player 18/19: League 1, 7 goals, 8 assists, good season
The common theme is, he does decent/good in league1, and struggles to make the step up. I saw plenty of Hull fans say it was the right move to let him go. Similar to how plenty of our fans will tell another club Chuks and Tennai will do a job.
I didn't watch him all those last 6 years, so I can only go from what I've read, and then watched with my own eyes, which is that he wasn't great in league1 for us, so I am doubtful he will make the step up, as he has previous history of failing.
Is this satisfactory and no longer making stuff up?
Out of interest, what makes you think he struggled to make the step up? He played 90 games in 3 seasons for Hull.
For me if he struggled to make the step up, then he'd have been found out in year one and made probably 20 appearances before being loaned out. But he wasn't.
I don't anymore, I was wrong.
After reading Grapevines short novel I had a reflection period.
Turns out all his minutes and apps I found were false and I was indeed making it up. Even though it says online he played 5092 minutes out of a potential 12,420 (not including injuries) those sites must all be wrong.
I also checked out Hull Citys message board to get a better view cause even though I have been repeatedly told on here, he is a Championship regular, all the information available says otherwise.
Turns out a lot of Hull fans were sad to see him go because he tried hard and was good to have around the dressing room.
Just listened to the Hard Truth podcast with the Peterborough owner, he mentioned that he spoke to Jim Rodwell recently and that the wage demands Charlton were getting quoted were cricket score numbers. Stating the obvious, but clearly going to be very tough for us to compete. We wont be paying 15-20k a week anytime soon.
Correct me if I'm wrong but NJ hasn't signed many players who he hasn't come into contact with in a previous life - so any such are the transfer rumours I would take most seriously.
He hadn’t managed Mannion, Mitchell, Edwards, Doc, Ahadme, Gilbert or McIntyre and I can’t remember if he crossed over at Southampton with Small or Ramsay but I think at least one of them was gone by the time he was. The only players he’s 100% managed that he’s signed for us are Berry, A Campbell, Potts and Hylton who is slightly different

I like the way they said onwards and upwards without him and went from 7th in the league and missing out on playoffs by one win, to staying in the championship by goal difference alone. Not saying it's down to 1 player but they signed him in League 1 and won the league, then finished 19th, 15th then 7th with him as part of the squad, then first season without him they're 21st.

Got absolutely no probs with having Doc as one of the options and definitely not someone I'd be looking to ship out , it's just about finding competition for him in there along with Anderson.

@sam3110 has already covered it but context is everything here.
In May 2024, Hull had just finished the season in 7th - three points outside of the playoffs. If we are in that position when Doc’s contract expires, I would guess that we wouldn’t renew him either. But we didn’t just finish 7th and three points outside of the Championship playoffs.
It was the right decision for Hull after they’d already spent three years at the level.
If we continue an upwards trajectory, Doc (and almost everyone else) will be replaced. But trying to force him out now without a clearly better player already in the building is foolish.
But you know what, all those posts on the Hull forums are probably also made up bollocks, they probably don't even go to games.
The only proof I need that Doc is a Championship player, is that he will be playing in it this season.
Sometimes you're just wrong about your opinion and need to own it.
Regardless of our team style and tactics, Doc didn't have composure on the ball or seem to have much time on it, at league one level,.so it's clear he won't at championship level. He is no doubt a grafter though. Will never be part of a midfield that controls the game at that level.
If it is a transfer rumours thread why are we spending it slagging off the team captain?
People are perfectly entitled to their opinions. It is however entirely a matter of choice to share such opinion with others. At which point those “others” are perfectly entitled to challenge such opinion. If you are so precious you can’t handle your opinion being challenged …….then don’t post it.
As it happens I don’t share the negative views on Docherty but then I appear to have a different perspective of the role he and others were asked to play under the NJ game plan. If you haven’t understood the approach I could perhaps unkindly ask some to focus on the post games words used by NJ in the Wembley dressing room.
Any number of players exercised an open mind to sacrifice their natural game in support of team disciplines. As a starting point NJ looks firstly at what players contribute out of rather than in possession. In Hull terms the difference between a Grant McCann who played Docherty and Leroy Rosenior who didn’t.
How many have exclaimed they don’t understand what Anderson brings?
You will not be alone in not liking approach but a) that’s football b) circa 40k recently enjoyed the fruits.
I also take a different view of any player one year into a 3yr contract, who has captained probably the smallest senior squad in living memory to achieve promotion from League 1, specifically delivering to said contract. In my world people who deliver to contract deserve respect. I take the view he’s earned the right to retest his skills in the Championship.
I have no reason to pre judge his anticipated performance for 2025/2026.
In preparing for our first Championship campaign for 6 years I am mindful of 2019 recruitment which saw us acquire just 2 proven Championship performers who barely played.
Docherty is one of 3 of the current 10 senior functioning outfield players (and thus the entire squad) who has any vestige of serious Championship experience and he is the one some want to jettison? As listed 86% of the squad have zero Championship credibility. Yet a dozen or more have earned the right to test their game.
In respect of actual transfer rumours I live in hope we do target 5 Championship grown ups for the spine of the team sufficient to lift the competitive standards of the match day squad, where funds might also stretch to adding creativity and maybe an emerging talent or two from elsewhere.
Just my opinion.
Some of us think he’s a bit weak - thats all.
If NJ keeps him, we will all support Doc and hope he does brilliantly, but doubts do remain.
Loan with an option to buy would be ideal. Reckon he would start for us.
Very tidy player but going to be about 5 clubs interested in him. Rumoured to be on 10k a week at Birmingham so definitely not out of reach but if other clubs start offering big loan fees as well not sure we would be able to get him
That's the issue, although, it may help us that Birmingham probably don't see us a threat to their league position? They might prefer to send him to a team that won't be challenging top6 in their eyes.

Loan with an option to buy would be ideal. Reckon he would start for us.
Who’s place would you see him taking? Not saying he wouldn’t start for us.
I agree- Doc is not good enough.
You need to provide a PhD level of analysis for a statement like that or Henry will be right on your case.
Just an opinion based on what I saw - not critical of his character or effort, but he is limited.

We've lost Chuks, Bouzanis, Hylton, Watson, Gilbert and McIntyre from the squad. Small might go as well.
Asiimwe, Mitchell and Taylor have returned.
So overall we're 3 (possibly 4) men down already so 5 signings is not going to anywhere near enough.
Though I don’t think the plan for a smaller squad drastically changes, I still think we’ll make more use of u21s than as a fanbase we generally feel comfortable with. They didn’t have to have so many of that group as part of the squad at Wembley, and I assume they’re the one who regularly train with the first team.
I was told about four having been lined up in early April so that does make more sense
Sean Roughan from Lincoln was reported to have agreed terms with an unnamed LG1/champ club back in early May.
We are shopping in a bigger market now anyway, championship calibre only.
Like this:
The only proof I need that Doc is a Championship player, is that he will be playing in it this season.
Sometimes you're just wrong about your opinion and need to own it.
Sometimes a good team is more than the best XI players possible on the pitch
Would expect NJ to target a CM as a must sign.
Good leader in the dressing room by the sounds of things on top of everything else.
If NJ keeps him, we will all support Doc and hope he does brilliantly, but doubts do remain.
