Not the best source, but, alleged Charlton target Bradley Ibrahim is in advanced talks with Plymouth.

Competitive with whom, the league? Preston? nobody knows the wage budget we can or can't afford yet so its all speculation until we see something actually happen. Should Small leave for Preston then yes that would probably be a fair indicator of your point as why else would you go to Preston other than for the money?Braziliance said:
Last season we done really well. The reports look like we had the 8th highest budget (despite being told we were top4) and fair play to Jones, he got us promoted. Identified some real gems as well in Edwards, Ramsay etc.Scoham said:

Rumoured fee of 10k a week. Which is less than the going rate in this league.
Oxford United have multiple players on 5 digits a week and then the higher end of the thousands.
This is championship football, the wages are genuinely crazy.
I doubt we were limited to paying under £5k for everyone last season, it’s probably that not much of a stretch to start paying £10k a week.
The issue is now, we are without a doubt operating with the lowest wage structure. 8th to to the top 6 was just 1.4 million isn't too unrealistic to keep up with. Whole different structure now.
The owners are going to have to take the hit if we want survival, it's just how it goes nowadays, or risk being a club like Rotherham, Barnsley, Peterborough, Wigan etc.
Main thing is we have Jones, with him and his style we have a chance. Just disappointing that we can't offer competitive wages.0 -

Might go there if you had a night out planned in Blackpool0

Preston are perennial mid to lower Championship fodder, despite having had near enough a decade in this league to move on to challenging for promotion.MartinCAFC said:

That is the going rate! In fact, it is well below the going rate for most Championship clubs.Callumcafc said:1. Doubt it’s true from a random fan account
2. We can’t stop other teams paying over the odds for unproven young players - we don’t even know if he’ll make the step up, so 10k p/w on a five year contract would be horrendous for the club
3. The challenge is finding better, for cheaper - we got a better left back (Edwards) last summer and I’m sure we can find a better winger this summer2 -

Just for reference, there are 2 players with 5 years left to run on their contract in the Championship and 18 with 4 years left (of 24/25 Championship clubs, according to Transfermarkt). There is no way anyone in the Championship is offering a 5 year deal to Thierry Small0

Thierry Small has not played a competitive match at Championship level in his career. Paying him 10k per week for five years would be a big gamble for a newly promoted club.Woodwork said:

We should be prepared to pay the going rate for players who are established at the level or we believe with near certainty are good enough to establish themselves. We will have made an assessment on Thierry Small’s ability to step up and made an offer in line with what makes sense for the position Charlton Athletic are in.
We are not in a position to take risks with the budget we have. That’s the reality of being a newly promoted team.

£10k? It is for an up and coming & highly rated L1 player joining a Championship side, being told they will be a part of their first team plans.fenaddick said:

In that time they have finished:
11th, 7th, 14th, 9th, 13th, 13th, 12th, 10th and now 20th.
I would love Charlton to have that kind of success for the next decade. They aren't exactly the biggest club, and have lived comfortably well within their means. Apart from this season, their lowest finish in 9 seasons was 14th, that is extremely impressive. Infact this is the only season where they finished lower table, they've been a mid-table or higher the whole time other than that.
In for some proper disappointment if you think Preston aren't a club we should strive to replicate in the short to mid term future, imagine a lot of people would take that over being a nothing league 1 club.5 -

£8k+ for Berry and Doc is madness. I'm not sure either deserve a starting place, even in L1. Edwards, Ramsay and Jones on paupers wages, I don't think so.0

Preston are in the bottom third for wages. To compete with the league, you do need to fork out or risk every season with your head above water. As much as these leagues wages aren't sustainable, and show how bad football has got money wise, it also isn't sustainable to avoid the going rate for top championship players. That's why the likes of Wigan, Rotherham, Peterborough, Barsnley etc can't stay up when they come up.MartinCAFC said:

For what it's worth, I am pretty confident Small won't be signing for us and will end up at Preston. Hopefully I am wrong.0 -

This is also kind of the point though. I fully anticipate Preston to finish anywhere between 10th and 20th next season. They’ve had enough stability over the last nine/ten years to likely feel comfortable taking a risk on a player they like.Braziliance said:

We don’t have that luxury. We need to establish ourselves at the level by spending the money we do have appropriately.

Sure but it's a MASSIVE risk when he's never played at that level, if it wasn't then there would be loads more players on 5 year deals in the Championship. If he can't make the step up then they're potentially lumbered with paying him £520k a year to sit on the benchWoodwork said:

If we went down, hypothetically, there would probably be clauses, and someone would more than likely pay it. That is the risk in football.
If you aren't taking these types of risks, what are you in it for, being blunt.0 -
There would definitely be a % reduction in wages due to relegation, just as our players would have a % for the promotion we just achieved.Braziliance said:

None of that changes the fact that Championship clubs don’t take that risk often. What if he can’t make the step up but they don’t get relegated? You’re still burdened with him at that wage. Or if he gets a massive injury that keeps him out for a season.
All transfers are a risk, teams just have to calculate how much of a risk to take0 -
Wouldn't mind looking to Scandinavia for signings like Preston have , they seem to have had decent success up there with the likes of Riis and Frokjaer mixed in with a domestic core.3
-
Christ, not even a day into June and we're already deciding that the club can't compete on wages. Maybe let's just wait to see what kind of transfer business we do before writing it all off eh?17

If we ranked 8th in League1 for wages, where there was more leniency and less restrictions, what makes you think in the league above we will compete with wages?Scoham said:
Where’s it been confirmed we can’t offer competitive wages?Braziliance said:
Last season we done really well. The reports look like we had the 8th highest budget (despite being told we were top4) and fair play to Jones, he got us promoted. Identified some real gems as well in Edwards, Ramsay etc.Scoham said:
Exactly, if we don’t compete on wages we’ll go straight back down.Braziliance said:
But that is the championship. Most decent players are on 5 figures a week.NabySarr said:
It’s a tough balancing act though, if we give Small 10k a week then every player will be knocking on Jones door asking for similarBraziliance said:https://x.com/PNEChatter/status/1928747865901330677?t=rc33tsmvwDPGSenKfFKJnA&s=19

Just disappointing that we can't offer competitive wages.
For a fact, we won't be competing with at least roughly 18-20 teams in this league. Which is fine, I don't expect us to be, and would cost us millions.
Our direct competitors salary wise will be the likes of Pompey, Oxford, who already have players on a lot more than ours.
Time will tell, but like I said, this league is being severely underestimated, talk of a mid-table finish etc would be a miracle.
This is a mammoth task ahead, 21st would be a remarkable achievement and be one of our best achievements if we pull it off for a very long time.1 -
No one can know how we fared on wages this season until the accounts come out, it's pure guesswork other than thatBraziliance said:

I can’t believe people believe the stuff spouted on these websites. I take it all with a pinch of salt. I’m not sure 8th highest will be accurate, what are they using as sources when the accounts for last season won’t be out for any clubs yet?Braziliance said:
