MATCH PREVIEW: Birmingham City vs Charlton Athletic | Saturday 15th February 2025 - 3pm Kick-Off

Birmingham City vs Charlton Athletic
Saturday 15th February 2025 - 3pm Kick-Off
Referee: Sebastian Stocksbridge

Introduction
Well it doesn't get much harder than this, this coming Saturday the Addicks will be travelling to the most difficult ground in League One, at least this season, a venue where the home side have dropped points on just three occasions, and have yet to lose a single league game... Hey... I've heard these excuses somewhere before...? - This Saturday wont define our season, but three points here could really help our end of season goal... Promotion!!

The Opposition
Name: Birmingham City (1st) - Manager: Chris Davies
Ground: St. Andrews
Previous League Result: Birmingham 4-0 Cambridge

Of course next up for the Addicks is a very tough away trip to leader leagues Birmingham City... However like I say... We've been in this position before, twice in fact, terrified of what the outcome could be, yet ultimately have been pleased with our showing against a side who have blown the Division out of the water when it comes to their business in the Transfer Windows this season.

Our two previous occasions have ended in a 1-0 victory for both teams, with Birmingham's win coming in the League Cup, so naturally its only fair that the winners of this game, get the League title at the end of the day - Beating Birmingham in their own backyard, or even salvaging a draw wont be easy, yet the three games they've failed to win at home haven't exactly been consistent in terms of the opposition, with those draws coming against Blackpool (0-0), Northampton and Reading (1-1)

Charlton though do have the honour of being just one of two sides to keep a clean sheet in the League against our fearsome opponents, so if we've managed to keep the likes of Jay Stansfield (I think it was Lisa at the Valley) and Alfie May quiet once before now... Well there is no reason why we cant do it again is there?

Charlton Team News
Its a line-up that I'll be most curious to see this coming Saturday, after all Nathan Jones played a tactical masterclass against Birmingham at the Valley, by condensing the Midfield and having two sitting Midfielders, with two playing further up the pitch and so suffocating the playmakers that day.

If we copied those tactics then it might result in Karoy Anderson stepping into the starting eleven with one of our full-backs dropping to the bench, given how Thierry Small has benefited in recent weeks down the right flank, it might even be a chance to rest Kayne Ramsay, with Alex Mitchell returning at the back as part of a two man Centre-Back pairing.

Maynard-Brewer
Small - Mitchell - Jones - Edwards
Coventry - Docherty
Berry - Anderson
Godden - Campbell

Substitutes Bench: Mannion - Gillesphey - Ramsay - Gilbert - Aneke - Leaburn - Kanu

    • Birmingham City have won just one of their last five league games against Charlton Athletic (D1 L3), failing to score more than one goal in any of those matches.
    • Charlton Athletic have lost just one of their last five away league games against Birmingham City (W2 D2), with their last visit to St Andrews finishing in a 1-1 draw in July 2020.
    • Four of Birmingham’s last five home league games against London clubs have ended as draws, winning the other 2-0 against QPR in October 2022.
    • Charlton Athletic have scored 11 goals across their last four away league games (W2 D1 L1), scoring 2+ goals in all four. The Addicks last achieved that across more consecutive away games between December 1999 and March 2000 (six).

  • 1 nil to Charlton scored by our heavyweight champion Aneke.

We shouldn't be scared of these - looking at the highlights from their game with Blackpool six weeks ago, they were perhaps lucky to get away with a point. Hopefully this is our blueprint for tomorrow.

  • I think what is more likely is Campbell dropping back when we don’t have the ball so we can replicate the box midfield and go man to man on their midfield like last time.

                      AMB
         Ramsay Jones Gillesphey
    Small                                 Edwards
               Docherty Coventry
                 Berry     Campbell
                       Godden

Thats 4-4-2 box would be very very risky away from home. I’m sure Jones will have a game plan and it might be different to normal, but I can’t see the line up changing much

Left field but Kanu caused them a lot of problems that day .  Why not play him instead of Berry .
  • I don't think they are severely weakened having five players out. They have an interchangeable expensive squad. It is going to be tough but not impossible.

bloody buzzing for this, kind of feels a bit like a free hit - obviously that's not how Jones will look at it - but as long as we put in a good performance I wont be too upset, in fact a narrow 2-1 loss would still feel me with confidence going into the final 15 game run in.

Having said that, 1-2 FT. COYR.
  • Be surprised and disappointed if we didn’t keep the same starting line up
  • We've got players in form all over the pitch and our central midfield in particular looks like it could hold its own in the Championship. A 4-0 statement win for the Addicks.
  • Nervous about this one but if we get a point will be very pleased after our recent run. A win and I will be ecstatic and convinced we are pursuing second place! Same team. Interesting that Alex Gilbert and his family are Villa fans so I bet he will be desperate to get on and score a winner. COYR!!!!

This feels a bit like Pompey away in Bowyer's first season. A team on the up and on a good run of form, backed by a sold-out, boisterous away end against a promotion rival. 0-1 Charlton.

  • Unless someone has a knock I can’t see NJ not starting the same team, he has no need following the recent run.

nervous about this game but this is us and we have a habit of getting something from these games. If we can get 3 points then 2nd spot is on the cards.

    2-2 and everyone’s happy 😃
  • Too close to call, ( didn’t think I would be saying that about away to Brum a few months ago!)
If we really start on the front foot and take the game to them. Sit back and we will be there for the taking.
Really up for this hopefully my fellow travelers can make a difference. Head says 1-1 heart says 1-2.

    COME ON YOU REDS!!!

  • I'm going to go with a 1 - 1 scoreline, TC to equalise around the 77th minute mark
  • We were sloppy against Peterborough at the start and could easily have gone a goal down. So we have to tighten up at the back. The longer the game goes, without losing a goal, the better our chances as Small and TC can create havoc on the counter attack. I fancy a draw 1 - 1.

  • A repeat of the Home Tie would be great, where we took the game to them and overrun them, and yes no doubt surprised them into the bargain, so a win by a couple of goals would be nice, but any win will do and is achievable cheered on by a sold out away end...COYR...

    To an extent...

Birmingham are way better than Pompey were, certainly a way bigger budget.

The money Birmingham have spent, anything less than HMS piss the league would be a failure.
  • 1-0 to us. TC to score
  • unchanged starters (us) and at least a point .. really looking forward to this

    Piece of p155, this one.

    Brum 0 Charlton 1 (Godden)

HMS PTL moves onto its next port of call.

    Next!

     ;)
  • Surely Gilbert must feature - start with him
and let berry score the winner on 90 minutes!

The key for us is to disrupt them and get in their faces. Much as we did at the Valley. They are a team that like posession of the ball and can score goals so we need to deprive them of time. They are a quality side and IMO deserved to beat Newcastle last week. Not sure how the ref's assistant could see the Newcastle effort go over the line!

Back to the game, we can't start slowly. We won't dominate but we need to be at it from the start. I don't know how their full backs will deal with our pace. That may be a key area for us in an attacking sense.
  • Anything can happen either way in one game, but we’ll always have a chance in games like this because one of NJs strengths is setting up teams well defensively. Hoping we can get at least a draw.

    Same starting 11:
                                     Beer maker
                         Alf       corporal     Dizzy
       Gladstone                                    Buster
                          Tommy   Sent to
                         Chuck  Alastair
                                  Sniffer dog

But if we have tired legs by HT or just after then Sullivan for Chuck, Possibly Nwankwo and 'Son of' on for Alastair and sniffer dog. Ross kemp can cover any of the defenders and possibly Clive to cover another midfielder.
Personally I don't want to see Cheat code get on as it means we are a goal or two down.

This is serious business and a draw will keep our momentum going.

    A win would be orgasmic.

No injuries would also be a great result for CAFC.
