MATCH PREVIEW: Charlton Athletic vs Stevenage | Saturday 8th February 2025 - 12:30pm Kick-Off

Charlton Athletic vs Stevenage
Saturday 8th February 2025 - 12:30pm Kick-Off
Referee: Josh Smith

Charlton's latest attempts to win four games on the trot suffered another setback on the Lancashire coast last weekend - The Addicks visited Blackpool, looking to achieve the lofty stat of four wins back to back for the first time since 2020/21, and for a good period in the second half, it looked as though we'd continue our march, stepping into the top six for the first time since 21st September. Sadly it wasn't to be, with Blackpool salvaging a 2-2 draw. Lets hope its just one of very few setbacks!!

The Opposition
Name: Stevenage (11th) - Manager: Alex Revell
Ground: Broadhall Way
Previous League Result: Stevenage 4-1 Exeter

One aspect that came from our draw with Blackpool was the fact that the fight for the lower echelons of the Play-Offs is becoming extremely tight, four teams currently sit on 44-pts, whilst a whole host of sides continue to chase down sixth spot from slightly further afield, with anyone down to 15th still in with a realistic shot... Frustratingly; Stevenage are another of those sides, who will be looking to send the fight for the top six, down to the wire!!

For Alex Revell its been an impressive job, replacing Steve Evans is always going to be a tough ask, and is one that Revell seems to be achieving, Stevenage of course were in Play-Off contention this time last season, but inevitably fell away, where they'd go on to finish in 9th - Now they're back, looking to correct the downturn of form, at the worst possible time in any league campaign.

They come into this clash with their own run of form, having won their last three matches, with two of those on the road against fellow Play-Off chasers in Barnsley and Wrexham respectfully, they have however just won other win on the road this season - Last campaign their issue was goals, they had the fourth best Defence in the League, but the second least amount of goals in the top twelve was their ultimate issue. This doesnt look as though its been fixed, and with just 27-goals scored, and 25-goals conceded... Well it looks like it'll be a case of taking opportunities when they come, this Saturday lunchtime!!

Charlton Team News
Monday at 11pm was a momentous occasion in the Football calendar, with the distraction of the Transfer Window slamming shut for another six months - In Charlton's case it was a light breeze that closed the window, with a number of individuals seen as surplus to requirements and moved on. We did have a couple of incomings, yet many fans now question if we've left ourselves a little bit too light, especially with our injury record in recent years.

Those incomings are of course Alex Gilbey (in disguise) from Middlesbrough, and Tom McIntyre from Portsmouth - Both of whom will be ideally be helpful additions to the strengthening of the squad, and could well end up being our Neil Heaney or Josh Parker from successful seasons in the past... You'd expect to see both on the bench, however McIntyre as a Left footed Centre-Back could start ahead of Macauley Gillesphey, following his error that led to the Blackpool equaliser last Saturday... Elsewhere and you'd expect the majority of the squad to remain as is...

Maynard-Brewer
Ramsay - Jones - McIntyre
Small - Coventry - Docherty - Edwards
Berry
Godden - Campbell

Substitutes Bench: Mannion - Mitchell - Gillesphey - Anderson - Gilbert - Aneke - Leaburn

  • I'd be surprised if McIntyre started this game ahead of Gillesphey rather than on the bench. Maybe after he has been with the squad longer.
Agreed - swop Gillesphey and Mcintyre. I think Gilbert will get half hour but Mcintyre will remain on the bench for a few games at least.
  • Will Not be an easy game, they've not only beaten Wrexham and Barnsley recently, outplayed them too

  • No clean sheet but 2-1 home win.
  • With Birmingham away coming up next Saturday it's vital we pick up 6 points from our 2 home games this week.
2 1 Charlton in a tough fought game.
  • I'd be surprised if McIntyre started this game ahead of Gillesphey rather than on the bench. Maybe after he has been with the squad longer.
Is he fit enough to slot straight into the team;  and when we’ve got around to regularly playing a consistent team selection and slotting in players that know their teammates and equally are known by their teammates wouldn’t we want anyone new coming to spend a bit more time on the training ground with them first ?

  • We should be unchanged again barring injuries, new boys on the bench.
As said, Stevenage have run into form, so, as ever, this will not be easy.
We win another tight, tough game
  • Awful game to watch got 0-0 all over it, no more than 1-0 to either side. You can tell I can't wait to see this match.

4 all draw it is then

  • I have a feeling this is going to be a tough test they have been in excellent form and scoring alot of goals. If we can get the 3 points it will bode well for the playoffs as they have taken points from our rivals in recent weeks. 2-1
  • Keep the momentum. A hard fought win. I think the same team that started at Blackpool. Macca over McIntyre. Going for 2-1. Time for a Tyreece brace.
  • I can see Gas getting in ahead of Chuks for a spot on the bench, but I like that front two of Godden and TC to start
  • My head says a Desmond, my heart says 3-2. Close either way and nobody should be turning up tomorrow underestimating this Stevenage side. I am looking forward to seeing Gilbert.
  • the excitement and build up to this is incredible as our play off push captures the imagination of thousands and the anticipation is clear for all to see in the gazillions of comments added to this thread .
A win for Charlton but it's league one and proper zzzzz

Neither team has lost this season when taking the lead so the first goal is crucial.

Hoping for a clean sheet win but could see a 1-1 draw or worse given their recent form and our club’s habit of kicking everyone in the gonads when we might’ve turned a corner.

If we do win we’ll be guaranteed a top six place by the end of the day.

The only Change from the Forever Addicted lineup is Gillesphey for McIntyre and Kanu on the bench Instead of Chuks.
W6 D3 L1 is 21 points from last 10 matches so why take the chance to put in McIntyre for Gillesphey when despite Gill's error he had been part of the last 10 games.
Despite Aneke suddenly being fit for a few games I would definitely go with Kanu on the bench as Chuks has looked so sluggish and has lost the ability to move at more than a snails pace.

  • Stevenage have only scored 7 goals away from home in 12 matches this season - the fewest by 3. They’ve also only conceded 10 away from home - the fewest by 2.

Charlton have conceded only 10 goals at home this season - the second fewest behind only Birmingham. Also only scored 17 at home, the fewest in the top half.

Having read this thread, i'm feeling its gonna be virtually impossible to score against Stevenage. A  mean machine, drilled to the max - a league 1 concrete wall will be erected around there 18 yard line and they will likely nick one as we overstretch ourselves in frustration.  In reality however, i think we'll do em by 4 or 5. We'll be 1 up at half time - it will then be attritional until Gilbert comes on and takes the game by the scruff of the neck. A huge talent finally unshackled as he pulls the strings for  Leaburn, TC, Small and then Chucks to smash 1 in each in final half hour. 5-0.
    • Charlton Athletic have won just one of their five league games against Stevenage (D2 L2), both scoring and conceding three goals during that time.
    • Stevenage are unbeaten across their last six away league games against sides from London (W2 D4), keeping four clean sheets in that run.
    • Charlton have lost just one of their last 11 league games (W6 D4), netting 2+ goals in seven matches across that time.
    • Stevenage have won each of their last three league games and could win four in succession for the first time since November 2023.

We not scored in over 270 mins of football v Stevenage who are the form team in league one at present … going to tough because the way they play , but we not doing to bad now, expect unchanged team can’t see past a drawer if honest
  • Sock drawer.
I'm almost with Ronnie on this one, but feel we might even lose. It'll be a real test, much more of a test that many will be expecting. They've looked very good in their last three games.
  • Bring 'em on, love this "form team" stuff, as we put another upstart to the sword, going for a comfortable 3-0, and a top six spot...
  • This is going to be a tough game and I don't see it as a classic. If we get a 1-0 victory from this that would be a big result .6 points from the next available 9 would be a decent outcome. Godden to score with a typical poachers goal
  • We're on tele, might as well not bother putting a team out.

    0-6 to the mighty Stevenage!

More intetested in the wimmins team anyway.
  • I think this is going to be a tougher game than many are expecting, Stevenage are in cracking form and have beaten some of the strongest in the league in recent weeks including Wrexham, Barnsley and Orient. I still think with that being said we can walk away with all 3, just might be a bit scrappy than many of us would like

Agree with Ronnie: a drawer, probably 0 0 but hopefully one nil to us!
