Carey, in addition to being the fourth highest scorer in the series (and needing just 26 to be behind just Head and Root), is on target to break the world record for dismissals in a series - he has 27 and needs three in England's second innings to do so.

That sums up keepers and how they are viewed. He could hit another ton in this innings and only have Head in front of him for scoring the most runs, keep flawlessly and contribute in putting pressure on our batters by standing up to seamers and break a world record in the process but still have zero chance of winning Player of the Series. Simply because the highest runs scorer, top wicket taker or best all rounder with bat and ball will be given  that award. But had he been poor with gloves in the first two or three matches and failed with the bat then someone like Inglis might have replaced him.

It's a bit like goalkeepers really. There's always a focus on what they aren't doing right with more pressure on them to not make mistakes than any other position on the football pitch. But, even worse for them, they can't return to the team in another guise, as someone like Smith might, as purely a batter.

    https://www.espncricinfo.com/cricketers/zak-crawley-665053/bowling-batting-stats

Looking at his stats, Crawley averages 38 against Australia, 31 against India and 10 against New Zealand  :#

Bizarre that he has 8 50s in 27 innings against India, but zero 50s in 21 innings against NZ...

These boys continue to fail to learn. Root gives another masterclass in how to play and the rest just carry on blazing away or playing silly shots. Brook reverted to type and offered up catching practice. Smith could have gone many times before he got out. All things considered his was a totally shocking way to get out. As has been said he's not even our best keeper so why the hell is he playing. Add to all this one wonders if there is any planning or thinking. Why on earth is Carse opening the bowling? Carse may have got wickets but at what cost and again he served up some rubbish. Tongue had to open surely? Then we have another couple of dropped chances in the field but remember we don't need a fielding coach! You get the impression that it doesn't matter and that players don't care (I'm sure they do) but it's all too cosy as there don't seem to be any repercussions.

Thankfully this game lasted long enough to reach Day 3 and the McGrath Pink Day.

And it'll be a full day too, lots of money to be raised I'm sure

Will watch the first session tonight and then to bed. Not expecting much but would love to have then 5 down by lunch. Also expecting them to have a lead by the time we get to bat again.

Good to see Tongue opening the bowling this morning, hopefully Stokes continues too

England review Neser caught behind and it's given not out. Neser's bat hitting the floor confuses things because of snicko not lining up

Don’t think that one was out, but once again no certainty on Snicko.

Losing a review on Neser feels a waste.

If I was an Aussie I'd hate to watch Head in the 90's. He always has these weird wafts but actually progresses with singles

Potts Bowling. That is my signal to take my sleeping pill and bet. Expect to wake up to see Head with over 200 and Aussie to be over 200 ahead. Goodnight all. (miss you Anderson and Broad).

Potts comes into attack and has a nightmare first over, goes for 3 fours and a total of 14 runs. 200-2

Will Jacks drops an easy catch off Head on the boundary

BTW even if that catch was taken, it would have been no ball. Whilst they were replaying it first time our bowler overstepped. I am gone now.Night.

Is Neser the new Boycott ? 6 of 60 deliveries. Geoff would be pleased.

Wasn't given a no ball and all deliveries are checked by the third umpire

Nearly a screamer of a catch from Carse

Might help if we didn't bowl short & wide. Aim at the stumps & you have the chance of  bowled and lbw.

Neser has now faced more deliveries than our top 3 combined. If he faces another 30 odd balls you can add Stokes, Carse, Potts & Tongue to the list. Pretty pathetic really.

This is so so so shit.

I hope we get done by an innings and 200 runs

Absolutely pathetic bowling tactics and even worse at executing those shit tactics

Surely now is the time to give Jacks a bowl,  as otherwise we've basically picked a no 8 batsman, which is ridiculous. You might as well pick Pope and bat him at 8 if Jacks isn't trusted with the ball.

Carse so unlikely not to get Neser there. Incredible to spot it hit the boot but it was just outside the line and no reviews left

Losing a review on Neser feels a waste.
Losing 2 reviews on Neser feels ridiculous.

You know a plumb lbw against Steve Smith won't be given, and we won't be able to review it.

This is what I was expecting the whole series to be more like. England bowlers toiling with a soft ball on a flat pitch.
