    Are the players not allowed time off? And if they're asked the question what do you expect them to do? Lie and say it was awful and they were miserable the whole time?

    Theres a middle ground though isnt there. if that was put to me in that situation I'd say something like "We've been working hard, had some great sessions. We've also managed to take a little time away from cricket and have a little rest physically and mentally"

    The sad thing is that he is going to struggle to actually have a meaningful career. He's not a white ball spinner, can't bat and teams in the CC might only need him for half a season. Bethell is in a similar position, so far as his stunted development is concerned, but he has the advantage of being a white ball player too.  

    This is as much down to the ECB as it is McCullum and Key though. The effectiveness of the CC and the 50 over competition, as schools for young cricketers to develop their careers, has been totally eroded. The England management can't trust the pathway so find themselves selecting on "hunches" and "analysts" but compound that by then over protecting them, in enforcing those central contracts, in refusing to use those vehicles to allow those players to learn their craft. 
    Hit the nail on the head there , Bashir isn't going to get another Div 1 deal because the majority of them will have frontline spinners already signed and most aren't complete No11s. Bethell I'd love to see actually play in the CC next year but he'll probably be carrying the drinks in the IPL for someone for the first chunk of games. 

    This entire management philosophy from the ECB down has been a disaster in terms of how they treat the county game in recent years. Feels like it's the poor relation to the cash cow of The Hundred which in turn has turned the 50 over competition into crickets answer to the Vertu Trophy where counties are just blooding academy talents because the first team aren't around. Of course this can work out well in the long term  , certainly for Kent getting the likes of Ben Dawkins time in the middle is useful but the whole competition feels like a complete afterthought.

    I wonder what Charlton fans would think if the team were in the relegation zone, playing terribly and looking like they weren't up for "the fight".

    Then in a Thursday press conference, a player says that since the last defeat we haven't spoken about football or been on the training ground once.

    But we have had a great time enjoying ourselves and not giving a second thought to our critical position.
