  • I'm looking forward to watching Tawanda bat all day for his 200 to round off a great weekend.

Out first ball of the day!
  • Or should I say, was given out first ball of the day. Quite what the ball hit is open to debate.
  • Oh well. Back to trailing through pictures from yesterday I suppose...........

The 1970s is a very good place to start imho.
  • Benjamin caught behind for 2 (18)

    172-5 and still 89 behind
  • Leaning's woes continue with a particularly average shot to be caught at mid-off for 22 (79)

    181-6

    80 behind
  • Finch plays on for 7 (23) without any addition to the total

  • Parkinson LBW 1 (7)

    183-8

    78 behind

  • Stewart is currently stranded on 1* (6)

  • Leaning will be probably somewhat pleased that we have a break from the CC now:

    Innings - 13
    Not Out - 0
    Runs - 226
    Top Score - 40
    Average - 17.39

The two biggest arguments for retaining him in the side are his slip fielding (11 catches) and his bowling (8 wickets at 57.37). His bowling isn't up to taking wickets but, there again, our number one spinner, Parkinson, has just 9 wickets at 55.00.
  • It sounds like Ball might not come out to bat. It's a real head scratcher that we took two players on loan but didn't play one of them at all. The one we did play for both games was one of just three seamers in this match who has a history of being injured. He took 4 wickets at 68.25 apiece with an E/R of 4.58 in his loan spell with us.
  • I couldn't bring myself to look at the table but spoiler alerts from the commentators has revealed that, should Northants avoid defeat today, we will be bottom.

Sometimes it's easy to blame the coach and Walker lost his job because of our results. There are so many other things though - the ability of our players to score meaningful runs and take wickets for starters.
  • Stewart out for a valiant 49 (49) and a partnership of 64 with Gilchrist who finished on 16* (35). No Jake Ball and 247 all out so Derbyshire win by an innings and 14 runs.
  • This is probably a new low the county has ever faced. That honeymoon period the new coach had has rapidly disappeared
  • Clone Grant Stewart !

All rounder who always gives 100% .
  • On the grounds that the fortunes of Kent and Charlton often go in opposite ways, I expect us to beat Wycombe 9-0 tomorrow...

As it's clearly impossible for Kent and Charlton to be successful at the same time, it's noble of Kent to sacrifice themselves until Charlton have won at Wembley.

It does seem that we can't have both
  • Worse than last season, gutless and pathetic!
  • I'm going to dial back on sport - its been a crazy last month but I don't want the Kent performances to bring me down.

  • I love reading this kind of news that you share with us, AA.

I'd be grateful if you would update us re this competition, please as I doubt it will receive any coverage elsewhere.

These lads are potentially our county players of the future.

Will do Fanny. Kids develop at different rates but at least more are now coming to the attention of counties sooner rather than later. As an example of that, Jas Singh didn't go to a cricket playing school and never made a county age group squad until he was 15. Had he not been at a club such as Bexley he might have been totally missed. This MCC initiative and others such institutions such as SACA can only help to improve the chances of those less well connected.

  • A bit more of a positive thing to report. I mentioned previously that Seb has been involved in coaching, cost-free to the parents as it is funded by the MCC, a group of young cricketers that are not in a county age group squad or attend a fee paying school. This is a nationwide MCC initiative, with the idea being to level the playing field between State children and their private school counterparts who enjoy their own high quality facilities and in-house coaching and also to have a closer look at those players that are might be missed as they are not part of the more traditional pathway.

The training lasted 10 weeks from January and since the start of the season, the three Kent hubs have been participating in a nationwide competition with the U14s from Seb's hub initially knocked out, in the group stage, the two other Kent hubs. As a result they qualified for the national stages where they progressed, following four further wins, to today's semi-final against a hub from Somerset which they duly won by 88 runs (181-8 v 93-9).

The reward? A final at the home of cricket - Lord's - against the winner of  the other semi, a team from either Newcastle or Nottingham. Unfortunately, Seb is absolutely gutted as he will be missing the final on Saturday 13th September as he booked three months ago a golfing holiday to coincide with what he thought would be following the end of his own playing season. That is akin to those that booked a holiday not thinking that Charlton would make the Play-off final. Still a fantastic achievement and here's hoping the Kent lads duly bring the trophy home.

Was that game today at Eltham College? If so,  I was asked to umpire it but said no...wish I had now. (Probably more fun than the new Mission Impossible movie!)

This game was in Hampshire. There are three different sorts of Kent affiliated games currently going on - this Kent hub side competing in the MCC competition, the Kent regional matches and the Kent age group games. It's all quite confusing!
  • I was wondering whether Mikey Cohen might be playing for Canterbury against Bickley Park on Saturday - he's had a few overs in the Kent 2s this season and returned 3-27 off 6 in a friendly against Whitstable some three weeks ago. But no sign that he is near playing for the first team so I thought I'd check when he did last play a pro game - from what I can see it was a CC match almost four years ago for Derbyshire between 11th-14th July 2021. Poor bloke appears to have suffered several serious instances of stress fractures but that does beg the question whether we will actually see him in Kent colours. I hope so because he does offer that point of difference being a left arm quick. Just don't want him turning up on Saturday for Canterbury!
  • A strong looking 14 for our first Blast match. Agar has only just arrived and will be available for our game against Middlesex next week. Crawley available for the first four games.

In today's preview for the Blast game tomorrow, it says "Mikey Cohen has suffered a setback in his return to bowling schedule and remains unavailable for selection at this time."

Wow you have got to feel really sorry for him . I seem to remember he may have been injured when we signed him ?

He had been out with a stress fracture injured sustained in July 2021 and didn't play again for Derbyshire until his contract expired at the end of 2022. I believe that he then had extensive trials with us in 2023 to prove his fitness following which in November of that year he signed a two-year contract. It was in March last year that Simon Cook announced that he had suffered another stress fracture. He's been trying ever since to regain fitness but has, in effect, been out injured for three years now. We took a punt on someone who has the raw credentials but has a history of injury. A bit like Aneke but the difference is that at least he has managed to play some football.

Aneke would snap if he tried to bowl, to be fair .
