Championship midfielders between the age of 22 and 31 who have played less than 50% of their team's minutes and been an unused sub 10 times or more this season:
- Elijah Dixon-Bonner (QPR) - Alex Gilbert (Boro) - Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu (Luton) - Adil Aouchiche (Sunderland) - Ousmane Diakite (West Brom) - John Buckley (Blackburn) - Jamie Allen (Coventry) - Ryan Ledson (Preston) - Josh McEachran (Oxford) - Jordan Houghton (Plymouth) - Jay Fulton (Swansea) - Marcus McGuane (Bristol City) - Andy Rinomhota (Cardiff)
Boro just recently signed Whittaker from Plymouth as well so pushes Gilbert further down the pecking order. Would assume they’ll let him go out on loan but no chance we’d secure him on a permanent, if we are interested.
Why no chance, wages? At his age I’d imagine at some point he’ll want regular first team football.
We’d have to pay quite a significant fee and I just cannot see that happening, not this window and not without a sale of a player to fund most of it.
Assuming Gilbert is the loan signing, it will be interesting to see who the permanent signing will be, I know the obvious move would be Harry Cornick but he's not someone that's really ever had pace so I don't quite see him as the player you'd rotate with TC.
"Middlesbrough are prepared to let Daniel Barlaser leave this month. Derby and an unnamed League One club have made an enquiry. Defender Matt Clarke is also on Derby’s radar while fellow Boro midfielder Alex Gilbert could now depart on loan. #boro #dcfc"
Replaced Finn Azaz in their last game in the 81st minute. General consensus seems to be that he needs game time and that's he rated.
Could be a bit of a sleeper signing for us. If he's good enough to be part of the match day squad for Boro, he's probably good enough to be part of ours.
Great name. He’s the guy you want to stride confidently into the cantina in Mos Eisley with.

We should definitely be tracking their keeper for the summer, thought he was absolutely brilliant last night
He had a great game last night yes, but then so did Mannion last season away at Cambridge. Would need to see far more of him than just one game.
Agreed but he has many plaudits this season, has been highly rated for a long time at WBA, he's also been a number 1 at a few clubs in loans now as opposed to Mansion who was highly rated in his youth but barely broke the bench at a not great Cambridge side
I remember seeing him play at The Valley for another of his loan sides and was impressed then too. Not saying we should rush out and buy him now but should have someone watch him regularly for the rest of the season. I doubt he’d renew his contract at WBA so would be on a free in the summer but with a number of suitors I’d assume.
@LargeAddick Griffiths not out of contract until 2027. !!
It's 29th Jan, we've not signed anyone and nobody has thrown a tizzy! This has got to be the most panic-free January window we've had in absolutely ages
Why the HELL have we not signed anyone yet christ all f**king mighty do these owners have ZERO ambitions or something the likes of Hull have gone out and purchased ten players this month I know they're in the Championship but they're proof that you can go out and find deals if you really want to we're going to miss out on promotion simply because the owners cant be bothered to dip into their pockets and make the signing that could be the difference between promotion and even relegation I mean it wont take much for the bottom four to yet go on some kind of a run and put us at risk of relegation to League Two

Amazing what a few wins will do. Personally I’m just hoping that the owners will look at our form and think bankrolling a couple of higher level signings could really up our chances of promotion. If this doesn’t happen I’d hope that one of but hopefully both, Small and Leaburn sign new deals to offset the lack of incomings.

It’s the complete lack of a full stop that gives it the feel of a genuine transfer window rant.
I want to believe this ownership want us to succeed and are good for us and on the rare occasion things like the lloyd Jones extension makes me think this
but why do i feel this is going to be another Aaron collins jonson clarke harris sam nombe
situation where “we tried”
but it was too late and we had no plan b and no time to get anything else done…
The window doesn't slam shut until February 3rd, so Andy Scott won't open the Charlton Athletic big book of young midfielders called Matt Smith until Monday.

I would guess potentially 2 midfielders? Gilbert to compete with Berry for the advanced role and someone to compete with Anderson and replace Campbell in effect. With the best will in the world Doc and Coventry are unlikely to play every game for the rest of the season without needing rotating or potential suspensions etc

‘He’ll do great in league 1 - a lot of our fans want to see him given a run instead of Azaz.’

if you had a choice of signing a decent new player or using the money to extend Smalls contract what would you choose ?
I would go for Small
But I'd rather the owners put in a bit of money and it wasn't an either/or.
